2021 BMW X7 Reviews Summary

In some parts of America, large luxury three-row SUVs are commonplace, but the list of available models is relatively short. Until recently, one famous German automaker was missing from the menu, but when the X7 arrived for the 2019 model year as a new BMW, that changed.

Based on the BMW X5 and built in the same South Carolina factory, the 2021 BMW X7 sees a few changes for 2021. The standard xDrive40i model gains a 48-volt mild-hybrid powertrain offering an incremental increase in efficiency, BMW cancels the xDrive50i version, and the performance-tuned Alpina XB7 debuts.

BMW also modifies the SUV’s standard, optional, and package equipment this year, restricting many of the X7’s most decadent features to the Alpina XB7.

2022 Chevrolet Traverse Reviews Summary

Lots of people think they need a traditional, truck-based, full-size SUV. But they don’t. You can whittle down the reasons to spend thousands more on something like a Chevy Tahoe to three things. The first is a need to tow more than 5,000 pounds of trailer. The second is to go farther off-road. The third is for incrementally more passenger and cargo space. If you have no need for such things, may we show you a three-row SUV called the 2022 Chevrolet Traverse instead?

2021 BMW X7

8/10

2022 Chevrolet Traverse

7/10

The 2021 BMW X7 was a standout in the luxury SUV segment, often seen navigating the bustling streets of Los Angeles. It was known for its superior interior quality, surpassing that of the Cadillac Escalade, and boasted a prestigious aura that outshone the Infiniti QX80 and Lincoln Navigator. The X7's technological sophistication was a step above the Lexus LX 570, and its visual presence was more commanding than the Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class. Despite its impressive attributes, the X7's appeal was subjective, as personal preference played a significant role in this segment.

The X7 was available in three versions, with the xDrive40i starting at $74,900, the M50i at $99,800, and the Alpina BX7 at $141,300. The test vehicle, an X7 xDrive40i, was equipped with premium features like 22-inch aluminum wheels, extended leather, and a trailer hitch, bringing the total cost to $91,745. The X7's design, characterized by its large grille, was fitting for its size, and its styling was both traditional and glamorous, securing its place at the top of BMW's SUV lineup. Inside, the X7 shared similarities with the X5, offering high-tech design and quality materials, though some quirks required acclimation.

The 2022 Chevrolet Traverse, while often compared to a minivan, was a practical choice for those seeking an SUV without the higher costs and lower fuel efficiency of larger models. Starting at $33,700 for the base LS with front-wheel drive, the Traverse offered a more budget-friendly option compared to its larger counterparts. The High Country trim, at $53,400, provided a more upscale experience. All-wheel drive was available across the lineup, though its 7.5-inch ground clearance limited its off-road capabilities.

For 2022, the Traverse received a light restyle, featuring new headlights, taillights, and grille designs, along with updated wheel options and color choices. The RS trim, tested here, included blacked-out trim and dark gray 20-inch wheels, making it one of the more visually appealing options in its segment. The Traverse's design was noted for its restraint, with clean lines and tasteful details. Inside, the RS trim featured black leather upholstery with contrast stitching, though hard plastic surfaces were prevalent. The interior layout was simple and logical, with user-friendly controls for the stereo and climate systems.

Performance

2021 BMW X7

7/10

2022 Chevrolet Traverse

5/10

The 2021 BMW X7 xDrive40i was powered by a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine, producing 335 horsepower and 331 lb-ft of torque. This engine was paired with an eight-speed sport automatic transmission and BMW's xDrive all-wheel-drive system. The X7 featured eBoost mild-hybrid technology, which included a 48-volt starter/generator and battery, aimed at improving fuel economy and responsiveness. However, the EPA ratings showed a slight decrease in fuel efficiency compared to the previous year, with 19 mpg city, 24 mpg highway, and 21 mpg combined.

Despite the eBoost technology, the X7 delivered ample power, accelerating from 0 to 60 mph in 5.8 seconds. The SUV's driving dynamics were smooth and serene, with features like the Dynamic Handling Package and Active Comfort Drive system enhancing ride quality. However, the X7's nearly 5,400-pound curb weight was noticeable, and its handling on tight roads could be challenging. The eight-speed transmission was praised for its performance, and the M Sport brakes provided reliable stopping power.

The 2022 Chevrolet Traverse was equipped with a 3.6-liter V6 engine, generating 310 horsepower and 266 lb-ft of torque, paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission. The Traverse's tow rating was 5,000 pounds, with various driving modes available for different conditions. The V6 engine provided adequate power for everyday tasks, and the EPA rated the AWD model at 20 mpg combined, with the test vehicle achieving 20.9 mpg.

In urban settings, the Traverse offered a firm yet compliant ride, though care was needed over larger road imperfections. On the highway, the Traverse excelled, though road and wind noise were more pronounced. In mountainous areas, the Traverse demonstrated athleticism, with its V6 engine, steering, and brakes performing well. However, the RS trim's all-season tires and softer suspension limited its handling precision on undulating roads.

Form and function

2022 Chevrolet Traverse

8/10

The 2021 BMW X7's interior was a testament to luxury, featuring heated and ventilated seats, premium leather upholstery, and a five-zone climate control system. Front-seat comfort was exceptional, and the second-row captain's chairs provided ample comfort, though the long rear doors could pose entry challenges. The third-row seat was surprisingly accommodating for adults, though accessing it required some maneuvering of the power seats. Cargo space was limited behind the third row, with a maximum capacity of 90.4 cubic feet when the second row was folded.

The 2022 Chevrolet Traverse RS offered a spacious interior with power-adjustable and heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, and triple-zone climate control. The second-row captain's chairs featured a Smart Slide function, facilitating access to the third row. While the all-black cabin lacked ventilated seats, the air conditioning system was effective. The third-row seat was accessible and offered reasonable comfort, though not as much as larger SUVs. The Traverse excelled in storage, with hidden compartments and generous cargo space, offering 98.2 cubic feet with the second and third rows folded.

2022 Chevrolet Traverse

The 2021 BMW X7 featured the Live Cockpit Professional digital instrumentation and iDrive 7.0 infotainment system, both with 12.3-inch displays. The system included Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, SiriusXM 360L, and Connected Package Pro, offering real-time traffic and parking information. Wireless charging, voice recognition, and gesture control were also available, though the latter was inconsistent. The head-up display was useful, though visibility was limited with polarized sunglasses.

The 2022 Chevrolet Traverse offered a 7-inch or 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, depending on the trim. The system supported Bluetooth, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and connected services, including a WiFi hotspot. Higher trims featured an 8-inch digital instrumentation panel and optional navigation. The voice recognition system was praised for its accuracy, and the digital rearview mirror and surround-view camera enhanced visibility and safety.

Safety

2022 Chevrolet Traverse

8/10

The 2021 BMW X7 came standard with a comprehensive suite of safety technologies, with additional features available in the Driving Assistance Professional Package and Parking Assistance Package. The Driving Assistance Professional Package included advanced features like evasive-steering assist and traffic-jam assist, which generally performed well, though some issues were noted in specific scenarios. The Parking Assistance Package added semi-automated parking assist and a surround-view camera.

The 2022 Chevrolet Traverse featured Chevy Safety Assist as standard, including forward-collision warning, pedestrian detection, and lane-keeping assist. Additional safety features were available in the Safety Package and on higher trims, such as adaptive cruise control and rear pedestrian alert. The Traverse's safety systems were generally accurate and user-friendly, though more advanced driving assistance systems were not available. The IIHS rated the Traverse "Good" in most tests, with an "Acceptable" rating in a new side-impact test.
