2021 Lexus NX Hybrid Reviews Summary

The 2021 Lexus NX compact SUV is showing its age. It’s not an inherently bad vehicle, but with a design that dates back to the 2015 model year, it’s struggling to keep pace with fresher competition—including the Acura RDX, Audi Q5, BMW X3, Infiniti QX50, Lincoln Corsair, Mercedes-Benz GLC, and Volvo XC60—and can’t justify its positioning as a premium product.

Lexus offers the gasoline-only NX 300 and the NX 300h hybrid, but we’ll focus on the latter for this review. The big news for the 2021 Lexus NX 300h is a new F Sport Black Line special edition, which adds sportier F Sport styling features that normally aren’t available on the hybrid. It also comes with a matching two-piece set of Zero Halliburton luggage. Other changes include additional standard driver aids and "low-profile" windshield wipers.

We tested the Black Line for this review, but with production limited to 1,000 units, it will likely be sold out by the time you read this. However, it’s mechanically similar to the regular-production NX 300h hybrid trim levels—base and Luxury.

2022 Chevrolet Traverse Reviews Summary

Lots of people think they need a traditional, truck-based, full-size SUV. But they don’t. You can whittle down the reasons to spend thousands more on something like a Chevy Tahoe to three things. The first is a need to tow more than 5,000 pounds of trailer. The second is to go farther off-road. The third is for incrementally more passenger and cargo space. If you have no need for such things, may we show you a three-row SUV called the 2022 Chevrolet Traverse instead?

2021 Lexus NX Hybrid

7/10

2022 Chevrolet Traverse

7/10

The 2021 Lexus NX Hybrid presented a unique blend of sharp edges and a streamlined profile, fitting snugly between the Lexus UX and RX models. Its design, while not traditionally SUV-like, maintained a familiar Lexus aesthetic. The F Sport Black Line variant added a sporty touch with a larger mesh grille, dark-finish 18-inch wheels, and a striking Grecian Water blue paint. Inside, the NX Hybrid's interior design, once radical, had become familiar, featuring a stepped center console and a mix of materials that leaned more towards mainstream than luxury.

In contrast, the 2022 Chevrolet Traverse offered a more traditional SUV appearance with a light restyle that included new headlights, taillights, and grille designs. The RS trim, with its blacked-out trim and dark gray 20-inch wheels, added a touch of sophistication. The Traverse's interior was logically laid out, featuring black leather upholstery with red and light gray stitching. Despite the use of hard plastics, the design was practical, with intuitive controls and a focus on functionality.

Performance

2021 Lexus NX Hybrid

6/10

2022 Chevrolet Traverse

5/10

The 2021 Lexus NX Hybrid was powered by a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine paired with an electric motor, producing a total of 194 horsepower. It featured standard all-wheel drive but was not a performance vehicle, with a 0-60 mph time of 9.1 seconds. The hybrid system prioritized fuel efficiency over excitement, and the sport-tuned suspension provided agile handling without sacrificing comfort. However, the steering felt numb, and the drive modes offered minimal impact on performance.

The 2022 Chevrolet Traverse came with a robust 3.6-liter V6 engine delivering 310 horsepower and 266 pound-feet of torque, paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission. It offered a tow rating of 5,000 pounds and various drive modes for different conditions. The Traverse provided a firm yet comfortable ride, with good handling and predictable behavior. However, it was prone to road and wind noise, and the RS trim's tires lacked excitement.

Form and function

2021 Lexus NX Hybrid

6/10

2022 Chevrolet Traverse

8/10

The 2021 Lexus NX Hybrid had limited interior space, with the least front headroom in its segment and cramped rear seats. The front seats were comfortable, offering 10-way power adjustment and optional heated and ventilated features. Cargo space was limited, with 16.8 cubic feet behind the rear seats and 53.7 cubic feet with them folded. Visibility was hindered by the sloping roofline and thick pillars.

The 2022 Chevrolet Traverse offered generous interior space, with seating for seven due to captain’s chairs in higher trims. The Smart Slide function and long rear doors facilitated easy access to the third row. The Traverse boasted ample cargo space, with 23 cubic feet behind the third row and a maximum of 98.2 cubic feet. Storage solutions were abundant, including hidden compartments and well-designed door panels.

Technology

2021 Lexus NX Hybrid

4/10

2022 Chevrolet Traverse

9/10

The 2021 Lexus NX Hybrid's infotainment system was a weak point, featuring an 8-inch display with a difficult-to-use Remote Touch Interface touchpad. While it supported Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, the system felt dated, with poor graphics and a lackluster audio system. Analog controls were a saving grace, providing some ease of use.

The 2022 Chevrolet Traverse featured a more modern infotainment system, with a 7-inch or 8-inch touchscreen depending on the trim. It offered wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a WiFi hotspot, and Teen Driver technology. The system was user-friendly, with excellent voice recognition and a digital rearview mirror for improved visibility. The RS trim included a surround-view camera and rear cross-traffic alert.

Safety

9/10

2022 Chevrolet Traverse

8/10

The 2021 Lexus NX Hybrid earned a “Top Safety Pick+” from the IIHS and a five-star overall rating from the NHTSA. It came with the Lexus Safety System+ 2.0, offering a comprehensive suite of driver aids, including adaptive cruise control and lane-tracing assist. However, it lacked a 360-degree camera system.

The 2022 Chevrolet Traverse included Chevy Safety Assist as standard, with features like forward-collision warning and lane-keeping assist. Higher trims added adaptive cruise control and a rear pedestrian alert system. While the IIHS had not fully rated the 2022 model, it received “Good” ratings in most collision tests. The Traverse offered a practical array of safety features, though it lacked advanced lane-centering assist.
