2023 Genesis GV80 Reviews Summary

We first got an idea of the GV80 in 2017 at the New York Auto Show when the company debuted a concept. Fast forward to 2021 when we saw the first production model and we knew it would be a hit. Over the past two years, our admiration has only grown. Available with Standard, Advanced, or Prestige packages, the GV80 is a midsize luxury SUV with plenty of features, offering stellar value for those who recognize a good deal when they see it.

Verdict: With great styling inside and out, plus a healthy choice of potent powertrains, the Genesis GV80 is an attractive and capable option in the midsize luxury SUV segment. It's technology can require a bit of a learning curve, but there are few true faults with this vehicle.

2024 Chevrolet Traverse Reviews Summary

The 2024 Chevrolet Traverse has gone from being something of a wallflower to becoming one of the more stand-out choices among midsize SUVs with three rows of seating. That’s because Chevrolet’s design and engineering team did its homework when it came time to update this third generation of the Traverse, a model that has featured in the brand’s lineup since its introduction back for the 2009 model year.

The 2024 Chevy Traverse is taller, wider, and longer than the outgoing variant. It’s also much more memorable to look at; following current SUV trends, Chevrolet gave the Traverse a more rugged appearance that borrows from both the full-size Tahoe SUV and Sierra pickup truck. Styling is always subjective, but in this instance, we think it’s fair to say Chevy got things right.

Verdict: More important than any additional visual bravado is that the 2024 Traverse has been improved in countless other ways. It has more standard driver aids, such as blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert. There is more space for passengers, particularly those seated in the third row. And the infotainment system gets a much larger touchscreen.

Look and feel

2023 Genesis GV80

9/10

2024 Chevrolet Traverse

8/10

The 2023 Genesis GV80 presented a sophisticated and graceful exterior with its quad-lamp headlights and bold grille, embodying a stately presence at over 16 feet in length. The Prestige trim featured 22-inch alloy wheels, enhancing its elegant appearance, especially with the matte Brunswick Green paint. The rear design mirrored the front with four-part taillamps above dual exhausts, and while the hands-free liftgate was boxy, it contributed to the SUV's overall elegance. Inside, the dark green quilted leather seats complemented the metal and matte wood trim, with a center console featuring three large dials for infotainment, transmission, and drive modes. The two-spoke steering wheel added a unique touch, though the 14.5-inch infotainment screen seemed awkwardly placed atop the dash. Despite this minor flaw, the interior was spacious and luxurious, offering a comfortable environment.

The 2024 Chevrolet Traverse, available in four trims, introduced the Z71 for moderate off-roading. During a test drive near Atlanta, it was clear the Z71 wasn't designed for extreme terrains like the Jeep Wrangler or Ford Bronco but could handle rugged paths. Competing with models like the Kia Telluride and Ford Explorer, the Traverse's pricing ranged from $38,995 for the LS to $55,595 for the RS. The Z71, priced at $47,795, featured 18-inch alloy wheels and Iridescent Pearl Tricoat paint, with a Jet Black interior accented by "Torch Red" details. While synthetic leather was optional, the standard cloth seats were comfortable and breathable. The Traverse's design and features catered to those seeking a balance between style and functionality.

Performance

2023 Genesis GV80

8/10

2024 Chevrolet Traverse

7/10

The 2023 Genesis GV80 offered all-wheel drive with a choice between a turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine producing 300 horsepower and 311 pound-feet of torque, or a turbo 3.5-liter V6 delivering 375 horsepower and 391 pound-feet of torque. Both engines were paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. While not particularly quick, taking about five and a half seconds to reach sixty, the GV80 excelled in highway driving with smooth power delivery and shifts. Its electronically controlled suspension, combined with active noise cancellation, provided a serene driving experience.

In contrast, the 2024 Chevrolet Traverse replaced its previous 310-horsepower 3.6-liter V6 with a turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine, generating 328 horsepower and 326 pound-feet of torque. This new engine offered more power and torque than its predecessor. All-wheel drive was optional, with the Z71 featuring a dual-clutch system for better grip in slippery conditions. The Traverse delivered acceptable acceleration and passing power, with a pleasant exhaust growl. Its steering was adequate, though the vehicle's length was noticeable. The ride quality was commendable, even with all-terrain tires and extra ground clearance. The brakes were progressive, and the stop-and-start feature was seamless. Fuel economy estimates ranged from 18 mpg city to 26 highway for the Limited with FWD.

Form and function

2023 Genesis GV80

9/10

2024 Chevrolet Traverse

8/10

The 2023 Genesis GV80 compensated for its lack of driving excitement with luxury features like heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, and ventilated seats. The Ergo Motion driver's seat offered fatigue-reducing adjustments, while Nappa leather seats added to the opulence. A third row was optional, though legroom was limited. The GV80 featured Genesis puddle lamps, a proximity key, and a digital key. The tri-zone climate control and optional 21-speaker stereo system enhanced comfort, while the suede headliner and panoramic glass roof added elegance. With 34.9 cubic feet of cargo space behind the second row, expandable to 84 cubic feet, and a towing capacity of 6,000 pounds, the GV80 offered ample utility.

The 2024 Chevrolet Traverse's base LS model seated eight, while the LT, Z71, and RS offered seven seats with captain's chairs. The Smart Slide second-row seats improved access to the third row, suitable for average-size adults. The power-folding third row and Autosense power liftgate facilitated cargo management. With 22.9 cubic feet of cargo space behind the third row, expandable to 96 cubic feet, the Traverse excelled in storage capacity. Numerous storage compartments, including a hidden area under the center console, added convenience. Visibility was generally good, though the third row felt slightly enclosed. The Z71 featured a power-operated driver's seat, though the front passenger seat was manually adjustable.

Technology

2024 Chevrolet Traverse

9/10

The 2023 Genesis GV80 featured a 14.5-inch touchscreen infotainment system and a 12.3-inch 3D digital gauge cluster. While the infotainment screen was slightly out of reach, the dial offered a tactile experience, though navigating through icons was cumbersome. The system supported Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, albeit not wirelessly. Wireless charging, multiple USB ports, and outlets ensured device connectivity. The remote smart parking assist allowed for maneuvering in tight spaces without the driver in the car.

The 2024 Chevrolet Traverse boasted a 17.7-inch infotainment touchscreen, replacing the previous 8-inch screen. The system, running on Google-based software, offered wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. An 11-inch digital instrument display provided customizable information. The wireless charging pad securely held devices during cornering. Physical controls for volume and HVAC functions were appreciated, though the driving mode button was less accessible. The Traverse introduced Super Cruise, a hands-free driving aid, expanding its functionality to single-lane roads. While effective, it disengaged at intersections, requiring driver adaptation.

Safety

9/10

2024 Chevrolet Traverse

8/10

The 2023 Genesis GV80 was equipped with advanced driver aids, including forward collision warning, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, and adaptive cruise control. A unique feature was the blind spot video feed in the digital gauge cluster. Highway Drive Assist used cameras, radar, and navigation for hands-on driving aid, though it struggled with sun glare. The GV80 received a five-star overall safety rating from NHTSA and a Good rating from IIHS for crashworthiness.

The 2024 Chevrolet Traverse had not yet been tested by NHTSA or IIHS, but it offered a comprehensive suite of driver aids, including automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist, blind-spot warning, and adaptive cruise control. While untested during the drive, these features provided reassurance.
