CarGurus Analysis: 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan
overall

Summary
With 260 currently listed for sale near Washington, DC and an average price of $17,282.00, 26.5% of 2020 Volkswagen Tiguans for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan 4.89 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.67 / 10.
94.2% of 2020 Tiguan models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan stands out in the compact crossover class because it offers three rows of seating, making it a rare choice for buyers who want this size of SUV but need extra passenger capacity. Volkswagen also made it much larger than average for its competitive set to fit those surprisingly spacious seats, and that added room is one of its defining strengths. It is also described as the German brand’s best-selling vehicle in the U.S., which underscores how broadly it appeals.
Beyond its packaging, the Tiguan’s appeal comes from its spacious cabin and easy-to-use technology. Those traits make it a practical option for shoppers who value comfort and straightforward operation over flash. The tradeoff is that handling is a weak point, so it is not the most engaging choice to drive. Some owners also wish it had a power liftgate, suggesting that convenience features are not as complete as the Tiguan’s space and value story might suggest.

This car is great. I think it was a good value because I also looked at a RAV4 and the RAV4 was more expensive, even though it had the exact same features and the Tiguan even was a bit roomier. The only thing the car is missing is a power lift gate.

I do think this car is a great value. I would compare it to the Audi Q5. I traded an Audi Q3 for it. There is way more space and features. I absolutely love it!

Owners consistently praise its value, space, and quality, and they also like the roomy interior and smooth handling. The Tiguan’s three-row packaging and easy-to-use technology fit shoppers who want a practical compact SUV with extra passenger capacity and straightforward operation.
The main trade-off is handling, which is a weak point, and the cabin’s convenience story is not as complete as its space story, since some owners wish it had a power liftgate.
With 29.7% of listings marked as good or great deals, you still have room to shop selectively.
Is the 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan reliable?
Owners rate it 4.89/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to a vehicle that feels reliable, dependable, and trouble-free in day-to-day use, with buyers especially appreciating its quality and value over time. The expert evaluation also emphasizes that the Tiguan is a quiet highway cruiser with a refined turbo-four and a well-insulated cabin, which supports the sense that it is built for steady, predictable use.
Volkswagen also includes five years of complimentary connected services through Car-Net, which adds useful ownership convenience. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that a roomy, tech-heavy SUV can become more expensive to keep satisfying if prior maintenance or condition has been neglected.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan?
At 73.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you are considering a higher-mileage example or one with visible cosmetic wear. Focus on how well the cabin, electronics, and safety equipment work, since this model’s appeal depends heavily on its space, technology, and everyday usability.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base S trim is the most stripped-down version, while the SE adds leatherette upholstery, heated front seats, automatic climate control, and the larger 8-inch touchscreen. The SE is the value leader, while the SE R-Line Black mostly adds cosmetic upgrades, and the SEL brings more luxury and safety equipment.
- Powertrain: Every Tiguan uses a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder with an eight-speed automatic. Front-wheel drive is standard, all-wheel drive is available, and the setup is tuned for torque rather than outright speed.
- Safety package: All models include forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, blind spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. Adaptive cruise control with lane-keeping assistance and LED headlights with automatic high beams are reserved for the top SEL trim.
- Infotainment: The base S trim uses a 6.5-inch touchscreen, while SE and higher trims get an 8-inch capacitive touchscreen. Wireless charging appears on trims above S, and Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth, and a WiFi hotspot are standard.
- Fuel efficiency: A front-drive Tiguan earns 25 miles per gallon combined, while the all-wheel-drive version is rated at 23 mpg combined. Highway numbers do not crack 30 mpg for either version.
Which 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan trim should I buy?
The 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan is offered in 5 trim levels: S, SE, SE R-Line Black, SEL, SEL Premium R-Line.
Here's the short version:
- S: This is the entry point, but it is the least compelling value because it misses the larger 8-inch touchscreen and several comfort upgrades. It makes sense only if you want the lowest starting price and are comfortable with a more basic setup.
- SE: This is the best-value trim. It adds leatherette upholstery, heated front seats, automatic climate control, and the 8-inch infotainment screen, which makes the Tiguan feel much more complete without a huge price jump.
- SE R-Line Black: This trim mostly adds appearance upgrades, so it is best for you if styling matters more than extra substance. It is not the strongest value pick.
- SEL: This is the trim to choose if you want the more premium equipment and the expanded safety content, including adaptive cruise control with lane-keeping assist. It is the right step up if you want a more fully equipped Tiguan.
- SEL Premium R-Line: This is the top-end choice for buyers who want the most features and are willing to pay for them. It sits at the pointy end of the range and is the most expensive way to get the Tiguan.
The safety package is strongest on the SEL trim, while lower trims still get the core driver-assistance features.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan?
This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile deals.
- Deal availability: 29.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 2,413 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 11.04% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 73.1% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $15,811.87, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan's resale value?
The current average of $16,182 sits slightly below last year's $18,191.
That decline suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favorable point in the cycle. If you plan to sell later, the current pricing trend means your future resale value will depend heavily on condition, mileage, and how well the vehicle has been maintained.
Because the Tiguan offers strong space and useful technology, it should continue to appeal to practical SUV shoppers. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.89/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan safe?
It earns a Top Safety Pick rating from IIHS, but only on top-of-the-line SEL Premium models with LED headlights.
It earns a 6/10 safety score from our experts.
Volkswagen made the standard safety package stronger for 2020 by adding forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, blind spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert to all models. Adaptive cruise control with lane-keeping assistance and LED headlights with automatic high beams are reserved for the top SEL trim, so lower trims miss some of the more advanced safety equipment.
The main caveat is that most Tiguans use halogen headlights, which IIHS rates poor. That means you should pay close attention to headlight equipment if safety is a priority.
Should I buy a 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 29.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 73.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 11.04% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.89/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It stands out for three-row seating in a compact crossover.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $17,562, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $16,182 average.
- It adds updated infotainment and broader everyday practicality.
The bottom line: If you want the better value today, the 2020 is the stronger buy because prices have softened and inventory is healthy. If you are willing to spend more for a newer model year, the 2021 is the cleaner alternative for buyers who prioritize updated features over upfront savings.
