CarGurus Analysis: 2019 Volkswagen Tiguan

Summary
With 235 currently listed for sale near Washington, DC and an average price of $13,747, 30.2% of 2019 Volkswagen Tiguans for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2019 Volkswagen Tiguan 4.38 / 5 stars.
91.9% of 2019 Tiguan models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2019 Volkswagen Tiguan stands out as a compact SUV that leans more toward space and refinement than outright ruggedness. It was introduced in 2017 for the 2018 model year as a significantly longer, seven-seat version of the Tiguan sold in other markets, and that extra practicality was a major part of its appeal. Volkswagen also positioned it as a mass-market choice, with some versions carrying a lower MSRP than the outgoing model. Under the hood, it used a turbocharged 2.0-liter engine with 184 horsepower, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission, while front-wheel drive remained standard and all-wheel drive was available.
Inside, the 2019 Tiguan offered a modern cabin with a sharp-edged design and a choice of 6.5-inch or eight-inch touchscreen infotainment systems depending on trim. It had vast space in the first two rows, and although the third-row seats were limited in legroom, they still added flexibility and folded away to create a huge cargo area. The tradeoff for that added size was a less responsive driving experience than the first generation, but it still felt solid and reassuring from behind the wheel. Reliability is also a consideration, as the model has been known to suffer from engine and electrical troubles, along with infotainment glitches.

I love my VW Tiguan SE for the panoramic sunroof and leather seats. The stereo system is pretty good, and the car is roomy and comfortable. Happy to have a third row for my family. Wish the trunk opened with the key fob bc it only unlocks it. Great value, def recommend!

We love it. It might miss a few functions like folding mirror, memory seats etc but a great SUV for the price. Runs great and we love the panoramic sunroof. Great value for the money

The car has pretty good features throughout the range. I have an SEL and it does what I would expect it to do. I think inflation has every car marked up right now, I dont ever recall a 4-year-old car costing this much. I would compare this to other small SUVs from Nissan, Toyota, and Mazda.

How much does the 2019 Volkswagen Tiguan cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $14,174 |
| Year-Round Low | $14,171 |
| Year-Round High | $16,030 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $16,031 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −11.59% |
Prices have softened 11.59% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 2,177 listings available, which suggests you have a healthy number of options to compare.
Is the 2019 Volkswagen Tiguan a good car?
Generally — the 4.38/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction. Owners consistently praise its spaciousness, good value, handling, fuel economy, tech, and comfort, with the panoramic sunroof standing out as a favorite feature. For you, that makes it a practical pick if you want a roomy compact SUV with a comfort-first personality and family-friendly flexibility. With 33.8% of listings marked as good or great deals, there is still meaningful value in the market if you shop carefully.
Is the 2019 Volkswagen Tiguan reliable?
Owners rate it 4.38/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
Owners describe it as dependable in everyday use, with strong satisfaction around comfort, value, and the kind of ownership experience you can count on. At the same time, the model has been associated with engine, electrical, and infotainment issues, so reliability is best judged by the specific vehicle in front of you. For used buyers, that means long-term ownership risk is manageable only if the maintenance history is clean and the car checks out well.
What should I look for when buying a used 2019 Volkswagen Tiguan?
At 68.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and confirm whether any prior damage was repaired properly. Put inspection priority on body panels, alignment, and signs of uneven wear, then test the infotainment system and electrical functions carefully. Because this model can also have engine and electrical concerns, focus on overall condition and documented maintenance rather than mileage alone.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2019 Volkswagen Tiguan?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you know what to target.
- Deal availability: 33.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 2,177 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 11.59% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 68.1% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $14,171, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2019 Volkswagen Tiguan's resale value?
The current average of $14,174 sits slightly below last year's $16,031.
That decline suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favorable entry point. For a future seller, it also means resale value may depend more on condition, mileage, and documentation than on broad market momentum. Well-kept examples should hold up better than average because shoppers still respond to the Tiguan’s space and value proposition.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.38/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2019 Volkswagen Tiguan or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2019 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2019 if:
- 33.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 68.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 11.59% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.38/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2018 if:
- At $12,665, the 2018 costs less than the current year's $14,174 average.
- It emphasizes cargo space, backseat room, and family-friendly practicality.
Consider the 2020 if:
- At $15,934, the 2020 costs more than the current year's $14,174 average.
- It adds especially roomy three-row packaging for extra passenger capacity.
The bottom line: The 2019 is the best all-around choice if you want a balance of value, owner satisfaction, and broad market availability. If your priority is saving money, the 2018 is the better price-first alternative. If you need extra seating and can spend more, the 2020 is the stronger fit.
