CarGurus Analysis: 2019 Volkswagen Tiguan

Summary
With 240 currently listed for sale near Washington, DC and an average price of $13,664.00, 27.1% of 2019 Volkswagen Tiguans for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2019 Volkswagen Tiguan 4.38 / 5 stars.

Why it stands out
The 2019 Volkswagen Tiguan stands out as a compact SUV that leans more toward space and practicality than flash. In this generation, Volkswagen stretched the Tiguan significantly and made a seven-seat configuration the default layout, giving it a flexibility advantage that many buyers in this class will notice right away. It also kept the formula simple with just one turbocharged 2.0-liter engine, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive as standard, while all-wheel drive remained available. That combination makes the Tiguan appealing to shoppers who want a straightforward, easy-to-understand SUV with a more premium feel than many mainstream rivals.
Inside, the Tiguan’s strengths are its roomy front two rows and its useful third row, even if that rear-most seating is limited in legroom. The cabin is described as more modern than before, with a sharp-edged design and touchscreen infotainment depending on trim, and the range includes useful equipment such as phone app integration, driver-assistance tech, and available comfort features like heated front seats and a panoramic sunroof. At the same time, the Tiguan is not without compromises: its driving character is less responsive than the first generation, and Volkswagen’s reliability reputation remains a concern, with engine, electrical, and infotainment issues noted. For buyers who value space, comfort, and a well-equipped interior, the 2019 Tiguan has a lot going for it, but it is best approached with an eye toward condition and maintenance history.

I love my VW Tiguan SE for the panoramic sunroof and leather seats. The stereo system is pretty good, and the car is roomy and comfortable. Happy to have a third row for my family. Wish the trunk opened with the key fob bc it only unlocks it. Great value, def recommend!

We love it. It might miss a few functions like folding mirror, memory seats etc but a great SUV for the price. Runs great and we love the panoramic sunroof. Great value for the money

The car has pretty good features throughout the range. I have an SEL and it does what I would expect it to do. I think inflation has every car marked up right now, I dont ever recall a 4-year-old car costing this much. I would compare this to other small SUVs from Nissan, Toyota, and Mazda.

How much does the 2019 Volkswagen Tiguan cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $14,325 |
| Year-Round Low | $14,284.98 |
| Year-Round High | $16,170.32 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $16,164 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −11.38% |
Prices have softened 11.38% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 2,171 listings available, which suggests you should have some room to compare prices and conditions.
If you find a listing below $14,284.98, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2019 Volkswagen Tiguan a good car?
Generally — the 2019 Volkswagen Tiguan earns a 4.38/5 user rating, which points to strong owner satisfaction. Owners repeatedly praise its spaciousness, good value, and useful performance traits like handling and fuel economy. The tech and comfort features also stand out, especially the panoramic sunroof. For you, that makes it a smart fit if you want a compact SUV that prioritizes space and practicality over flash. With 29.4% of listings marked as good or great deals, there is still meaningful market opportunity if you shop carefully.
Is the 2019 Volkswagen Tiguan reliable?
Owners rate it 4.38/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback also points to a dependable ownership experience for many shoppers, with praise centered on value and everyday usability. At the same time, the model’s reputation is shaped by concerns around engine, electrical, and infotainment issues, so reliability is best judged by the specific vehicle in front of you. For used buyers, that means long-term ownership risk is manageable only if maintenance history and current condition check out.
What should I look for when buying a used 2019 Volkswagen Tiguan?
At 68.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should run a vehicle history report before you commit, then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection if the price looks unusually attractive. Focus on body condition, signs of prior repair, and whether the cabin and electronics feel consistent with the mileage and asking price. Because this model has a reputation that includes engine, electrical, and infotainment concerns, condition and maintenance records matter more than a quick test drive.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2019 Volkswagen Tiguan?
This is a moderate buyer’s market, so you can be selective without expecting every listing to be a bargain.
- Deal availability: 29.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 2,171 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 11.38% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 68.2% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $14,284.98, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2019 Volkswagen Tiguan's resale value?
The current average of $14,325 sits slightly below last year's $16,164.
That price movement suggests the market has cooled, which can make resale a little less favorable if you buy at the wrong point in the cycle. If you plan to sell later, your best protection is buying well, keeping the vehicle clean, and staying on top of maintenance. A well-kept Tiguan should still appeal to shoppers who want space and practicality in a compact SUV.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.38/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2019 Volkswagen Tiguan or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2019 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2019 if:
- 29.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 68.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 11.38% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.38/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2018 if:
- At $12,852, the 2018 costs less than the current year's $14,325 average.
- It emphasizes everyday usefulness with more cargo space and family-friendly practicality.
Consider the 2020 if:
- At $16,182, the 2020 costs more than the current year's $14,325 average.
- It adds a larger, three-row layout with especially roomy passenger space.
The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, owner satisfaction, and current market flexibility, the 2019 is the primary year to target. If your budget is tighter, the 2018 is the better value play; if you need extra passenger capacity and can spend more, the 2020 is the stronger upgrade path.
