One of Volkswagen's four gas-powered SUVs, the Tiguan compact crossover exists as a smaller and more affordable alternative to the Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport, or a more spacious option when the subcompact Taos doesn't fit the bill. The 2027 Volkswagen Tiguan competes with some of the market's hottest sellers, such as the Toyota RAV4 and the Honda CR-V.

What’s New for the 2027 Volkswagen Tiguan
While the Volkswagen Tiguan may not enjoy the recognition of its primary rivals, it has served the needs of drivers for nearly 20 years. The third-generation Tiguan debuted as an all-new model for 2025 and sees only minor tweaks for 2027, including a standard auto-hold function, upgraded camera image quality, and a standard heated steering wheel on the SE R-Line Black trim.
Design
Like most other Volkswagens, the 2027 Tiguan offers an attractive, contemporary design with enough elements to earn a second look, but not so much that it's screaming for attention. The S is highlighted by sleek LED front and rear lights, silver roof rails, dark exterior trim, and a set of rather generic machined 17-inch alloy wheels. For the SE, there are 19-inch two-tone alloys, while the SE R-Line Black gets 20-inch black alloys, black exterior accents, and a more pronounced lower grille and front spoiler. The SEL R-Line Turbo gets unique 20-inch machined two-tone alloy wheels, plus projector headlights, an LED light bar spanning the width of the grille, puddle lamps for the exterior mirrors, and illuminated badges.
Powertrain
Most 2027 Volkswagen Tiguan models feature standard front-wheel drive (FWD) and a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that generates 201 horsepower and 207 pound-feet of torque, all of which is managed by an eight-speed automatic transmission. VW's 4Motion all-wheel-drive (AWD) system is available. The exception is the SEL R-Line Turbo, which features standard AWD and a boosted 2.0-liter boasting 268 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. At the time of writing, the EPA had only released fuel economy figures for the Tiguan AWD with the 201-hp engine: 23 mpg city, 31 mpg highway, and 26 mpg combined. When properly equipped, the 2027 Tiguan can tow up to 1,800 pounds.

Interior
Once available with a body contortionist's dream of a third-row seat, the current VW Tiguan is strictly a two-row, five-passenger crossover with a three-person rear seat that, when folded down, expands the standard 33.8-cubic-foot cargo space to a voluminous 69.8 cubic feet. In base S guise, the 2027 Tiguan features cloth upholstery, a manual driver's seat with height adjustment, heated front seats, and a leatherette-wrapped tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel. The SE ups the ante with power lumbar for the driver, synthetic leather on the seats, and ambient lighting, while the SE R-Line Black adds real leather to the new-for-2027 heated steering wheel, stainless steel pedal trim, and a power panoramic sunroof. The priciest SEL R-Line Turbo model adds memory front seats, power lumbar adjustment, ventilation, and massage functions. On top of that, there’s genuine leather upholstery, a heated rear seat, and color-adjustable ambient lighting.
Technology
Regardless of which trim is selected, the 2027 Tiguan offers an impressive assortment of standard tech features, such as a 10.25-inch configurable digital gauge display, a 12.9-inch touchscreen infotainment system with satellite radio and Wi-Fi trials (subsequent subscriptions required), wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, and a wireless charger. Upper trims dial things up a couple more notches with a head-up display, while the SEL is the exclusive host to standard navigation, a 15-inch touchscreen, and Harman Kardon premium audio. That top variant also has a hands-free power tailgate and triple-zone automatic climate control, whereas other Tiguans are limited to a dual-zone system.
