Why it stands out
The 2023 Volkswagen Tiguan stands out as Volkswagen’s most popular model, and it is easy to see why after spending time with it. It has a more upscale appearance than many of its primary competitors, and it is also described as more enjoyable to drive. Its handling is a particular strength, and its stylish design helps it feel a little more polished than many mainstream crossover SUVs.
Practicality is another major part of the Tiguan’s appeal. It is larger inside than many of its rivals, offers plenty of cargo space, and is one of only two vehicles in its segment to offer a third-row seat. That said, the 2023 Tiguan is not without drawbacks. Its performance is fairly pedestrian, its ergonomic design is poor, and its technology can be unintuitive, which may be enough to turn off buyers who are especially sensitive to those issues.

The 2023 Volkswagen Tiguan proves to be a versatile and well-rounded crossover that offers a comfortable ride, ample space, and a range of modern features. During my recent test drive, the Tiguan demonstrated its ability to cater to both daily commuting and family adventures, making it a compelling choice in the compact SUV segment. As I approached the Tiguan, its sleek and modern design immediately caught my eye. The confident stance, stylish LED lighting, and chrome accents give it a premium feel. The Tiguan strikes a harmonious balance between sportiness and sophistication, making it an attractive option for those seeking an elegant yet adventurous presence on the road.

I love all the cars features. Great value, rides great. The only thing missing is an automatic lift rear trunk, although that is not available on this year and not a dealership issue, however it’s not that big of a deal. I love the feel of the seating and sleekness of the German design.

|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $23,061 |

There are 6,001 listings available, which suggests solid inventory availability.
If you find a listing below $22,529.85, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2023 Volkswagen Tiguan a good car?
Yes — the 2023 Volkswagen Tiguan earns a 5/5 user rating and a 7.67/10 expert rating.
The standout strength is Safety at 9/10.
It stands out as Volkswagen’s most popular model, with a more upscale appearance than many rivals and handling that makes it more enjoyable to drive than many mainstream crossover SUVs. It also gives you more interior room than many competitors and is one of only two vehicles in its segment to offer a third-row seat.
The trade-offs are clear: performance is fairly pedestrian, the ergonomic design is poor, and the technology can be unintuitive. That means you should value it most if you want a polished, practical compact SUV rather than a quick or especially intuitive one.
Good and great deals percentage: 32.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
Is the 2023 Volkswagen Tiguan reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The Tiguan’s appeal is reinforced by its practical design, solid construction, and broad utility. It also comes with two years of scheduled maintenance, roadside assistance, and a four-year/50,000-mile warranty, which helps reduce early ownership friction.
Its dependability story is also helped by the fact that Volkswagen includes a complimentary five-year Car-Net Remote Access subscription and a five-year Car-Net Safe & Secure plan with emergency assistance, collision notification, and stolen vehicle tracking. The performance notes also point to a powertrain that is usable and predictable in everyday driving, even if it is not especially strong.
For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is that the Tiguan’s tech and powertrain quirks may become daily annoyances if the vehicle has been poorly maintained or heavily used.
What should I look for when buying a used 2023 Volkswagen Tiguan?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 89.5% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still check the vehicle history report carefully, because a clean listing percentage does not replace documentation. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that focuses on the infotainment system, touch controls, and overall cabin condition, since those are the areas most likely to affect your day-to-day experience. It also makes sense to confirm that the safety and driver-assistance features work as expected, especially on trims where some equipment is optional.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The S, SE, SE R-Line Black, and SEL R-Line trims give you different looks and equipment levels, and the base trim has a smaller 6.5-inch touchscreen. The higher trims bring a more upscale cabin, larger displays, and more premium features, while the SEL R-Line adds the sportier appearance and top-spec lighting touches.
- Powertrain: Every Tiguan uses a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with 184 horsepower and 221 pound-feet of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive is standard, and 4Motion all-wheel drive is available; the AWD system adds extra drive modes and can send up to 50% of power to the rear wheels.
- Safety package: Front Assist and Side Assist are standard, and Front Assist includes forward collision warning with pedestrian detection and automatic emergency braking. Side Assist adds blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert, while IQ.Drive adds adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, active blind-spot monitoring, Lane Assist, Travel Assist, and Emergency Assist; IQ.Drive is optional on base models and standard on other models.
- Infotainment: The base S trim gets a 6.5-inch touchscreen, while other trims use an 8-inch display. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, wireless smartphone charging, Car-Net connected services, and the Fender premium sound system appear on the top trim, and the interface can be frustrating because of its multi-step menus.
- Fuel efficiency: The SEL R-Line is rated at 24 mpg in combined driving, and the test vehicle returned 22.6 mpg on a mixed route.
Which 2023 Volkswagen Tiguan trim should I buy?
The 2023 Volkswagen Tiguan is offered in 4 trim levels: S, SE, SE R-Line Black, and SEL R-Line.
Here's the short version:
- S: This is the entry point if you want the Tiguan’s core strengths at the lowest price, but you give up some of the nicer tech and visual polish found higher up the range. It still gets the standard safety hardware, so it makes sense if you care more about value than features.
- SE: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds a more usable 8-inch touchscreen and a better overall equipment balance without jumping all the way to the sportier trims. If you want the sweet spot between price and everyday livability, this is the one to start with.
- SE R-Line Black: Choose this if you want a more distinctive appearance and a sportier look without going all the way to the top trim. It is the right middle ground if style matters to you more than maximum luxury.
- SEL R-Line: This is the most upscale choice, with the larger 10.25-inch digital display, standard AWD, surround-view camera, parking sensors, premium audio, and the most polished cabin presentation. Buy this if you want the most complete Tiguan experience and are willing to pay for it.
IQ.Drive is optional on base models and standard on other models, so that safety-package difference is worth checking before you buy.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2023 Volkswagen Tiguan?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.
- Deal availability: 32.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 6,001 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.42% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 89.5% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $22,529.85, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2023 Volkswagen Tiguan's resale value?
The current average of $23,061 sits slightly below last year's $24,644.
That price movement suggests the Tiguan has softened enough to create a more favorable entry point for used buyers, but it also means future sellers may face some pressure if the market stays soft. The current pricing trend is not a sign of collapse; it is more of a normalization after a higher average a year ago. If you buy well now, you may be better positioned to limit depreciation later.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2023 Volkswagen Tiguan safe?
It earns a Top Safety Pick+ rating from IIHS, though that status does not apply for the 2023 calendar year.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
All Tiguans have standard Front Assist and Side Assist. Front Assist includes forward collision warning with pedestrian detection and automatic emergency braking, while Side Assist adds blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert. Volkswagen also includes an Automatic Post Collision Braking System, and IQ.Drive adds adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, active blind-spot monitoring, Lane Assist, Travel Assist, and Emergency Assist.
There is a caveat to keep in mind: NHTSA testing was incomplete at the time of the review, and the driver’s door unlatched and opened during the side-impact test. That makes it especially important to review the latest crash-test status before you buy.
Should I buy a 2023 Volkswagen Tiguan or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2023 if:
- 32.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 89.5% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.42% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It combines upscale styling, strong interior space, and one of the segment’s few available third-row seats.
Consider the 2022 if:
- At $20,770, the 2022 costs less than the current year's $23,061 average.
- It emphasizes value, style, and standard safety equipment.
Consider the 2024 if:
- At $25,146, the 2024 costs more than the current year's $23,061 average.
- It adds standard lane-keep assist and adaptive cruise control.
The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, space, and upscale feel, the 2023 is the primary year to target. If your budget is tighter, the 2022 is the better value play, while the 2024 makes sense if you want the newer standard safety setup and are willing to pay more.
