CarGurus Analysis: 2023 Volkswagen Tiguan
overall

Summary
With 223 currently listed for sale near Washington, DC and an average price of $22,005, 76.7% of 2023 Volkswagen Tiguans for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2023 Volkswagen Tiguan 5 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.67 / 10.
100.0% of 2023 Tiguan models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2023 Volkswagen Tiguan stands out in the compact crossover class because it feels larger inside than many of its rivals and is one of only two vehicles in its segment to offer a third-row seat. It also brings a more upscale appearance than many primary competitors, which helps it feel a little more polished than its size and price might suggest. Volkswagen’s most popular model is the Tiguan, and the overall impression is that it rewards spending time behind the wheel.
It is also appealing for the way it drives. The Tiguan is described as enjoyable to drive, with great handling and a stylish design adding to its appeal. Cargo space is another strength, making it practical for buyers who want everyday usefulness along with a more refined look.
That said, the 2023 Volkswagen Tiguan is not without drawbacks. Its performance is fairly pedestrian, and its technology can be unintuitive. The poor ergonomic design may also frustrate some shoppers, so while it has clear strengths in space, style, and road manners, it is best suited to buyers who can live with those compromises.

During my recent test drive, the Tiguan demonstrated its ability to cater to both daily commuting and family adventures, making it a compelling choice in the compact SUV segment. As I approached the Tiguan, its sleek and modern design immediately caught my eye. The confident stance, stylish LED lighting, and chrome accents give it a premium feel. The Tiguan strikes a harmonious balance between sportiness and sophistication, making it an attractive option for those seeking an elegant yet adventurous presence on the road.

I love all the cars features. Great value, rides great. The only thing missing is an automatic lift rear trunk, although that is not available on this year and not a dealership issue, however it’s not that big of a deal. I love the feel of the seating and sleekness of the German design.

How much does the 2023 Volkswagen Tiguan cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $22,858 |
| Year-Round Low | $22,524.28 |
| Year-Round High | $24,590.83 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $24,595 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −7.06% |
Prices have softened 7.06% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 6,159 listings available, which gives you a healthy amount of inventory to compare.
If you find a listing below $22,524.28, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2023 Volkswagen Tiguan a good car?
Yes — the 2023 Volkswagen Tiguan earns a 5/5 user rating and a 7.67/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Safety at 9/10.
The Tiguan’s appeal is rooted in its upscale appearance, roomy cabin, and useful cargo space, and it is one of only two vehicles in its segment with a third-row seat. It also drives better than many mainstream crossover SUVs, with handling that stands out as a particular strength.
The trade-offs are clear: performance is fairly pedestrian, the ergonomic design is poor, and the technology can be unintuitive. If you want a compact SUV that feels more polished than most rivals and you value practicality over speed, this year’s Tiguan fits that brief well.
34.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so you still have room to shop selectively.
Is the 2023 Volkswagen Tiguan reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The Tiguan’s overall formula leans toward durability-minded ownership: it has a solid, practical layout, strong utility, and a well-rounded safety and convenience package. The expert review also points to a vehicle that feels robustly assembled, which supports confidence in day-to-day use.
Volkswagen’s Carefree Coverage adds two years of scheduled maintenance, roadside assistance, and a four-year/50,000-mile warranty, which helps reduce early ownership costs. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that the Tiguan’s frustrating controls and tech quirks may remain part of the ownership experience even if the mechanical package holds up well.
What should I look for when buying a used 2023 Volkswagen Tiguan?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 89.2% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still check the history report carefully and prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you are shopping outside the cleanest listings. Focus on cabin condition, control usability, and whether the vehicle’s tech and safety systems operate as intended, since those are the areas most likely to affect your daily experience.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base S trim is the most stripped-down version, with a smaller touchscreen and fewer upscale touches than higher trims. The upper trims add a more premium feel, but the trim you choose can also limit your exterior and interior color combinations.
- Powertrain: The Tiguan uses a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with 184 horsepower and 221 pound-feet of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive is standard, and 4Motion all-wheel drive is available on some trims.
- Safety package: Front Assist and Side Assist are standard, and Front Assist includes forward collision warning with pedestrian detection and automatic emergency braking. Side Assist adds blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert. IQ.Drive is optional on base models and standard on other models, and it adds adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, active blind-spot monitoring, Lane Assist, Travel Assist, and Emergency Assist.
- Infotainment: The base S trim gets a 6.5-inch touchscreen, while other trims use an 8-inch display. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, wireless smartphone charging, Car-Net connected services, SiriusXM 360L, and a nine-speaker Fender premium sound system appear on the top trim.
- Fuel efficiency: The SEL R-Line is rated at 24 mpg in combined driving, and the test vehicle returned 22.6 mpg on a mixed route.
Which 2023 Volkswagen Tiguan trim should I buy?
The 2023 Volkswagen Tiguan is offered in 4 trim levels: S, SE, SE R-Line Black, and SEL R-Line.
Here's the short version:
- S: This is the entry point, so it makes the most sense if you want the Tiguan’s core space, safety, and utility at the lowest price. It gives you the basic formula, but you give up some of the more upscale tech and presentation found higher up.
- SE: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds a more complete everyday experience without jumping all the way to the top. It should be the first stop if you want a balanced mix of equipment and price.
- SE R-Line Black: Choose this if you want a sportier look without going all the way to the flagship trim. It is the trim for shoppers who care about styling and want a more distinctive appearance.
- SEL R-Line: This is the most upscale and fully featured version, with the larger digital display, standard AWD, and the richest equipment list. It is the right pick if you want the most premium Tiguan experience and are willing to pay for it.
IQ.Drive is optional on base models and standard on other models, so safety equipment improves as you move up the range.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2023 Volkswagen Tiguan?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop with some leverage if you compare listings carefully.
- Deal availability: 34.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 6,159 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.06% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 89.2% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $22,524.28, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2023 Volkswagen Tiguan's resale value?
The current average of $22,858 sits slightly below last year's $24,595.
That softer pricing suggests the Tiguan is in a buyer-friendly phase right now, which can help you enter at a lower cost. For a future seller, the same trend means you should expect more competition from similarly priced listings when it is time to trade in or sell privately.
The Tiguan’s strong utility, upscale presentation, and broad appeal should help it stay relevant with used shoppers. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2023 Volkswagen Tiguan safe?
It earns a Top Safety Pick+ rating from IIHS, though that status does not apply for the 2023 calendar year. NHTSA testing is incomplete, and NHTSA also reported that the driver’s door unlatched and opened during the side-impact test.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Front Assist and Side Assist are standard, and that means you get forward collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert right away. Volkswagen also includes an Automatic Post Collision Braking System, and IQ.Drive adds adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, active blind-spot monitoring, Lane Assist, Travel Assist, and Emergency Assist.
The main caveat is that the crash-test picture is not fully settled, so you should pay attention to the latest test updates before buying. Even so, the Tiguan’s active safety tech is broad and well executed.
Should I buy a 2023 Volkswagen Tiguan or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2023 if:
- 34.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 89.2% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.06% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It combines upscale styling, roomy packaging, and one of the segment’s few third-row seats.
Consider the 2022 if:
- At $20,613, the 2022 costs less than the current year's $22,858 average.
- It emphasizes value, style, and standard safety equipment.
Consider the 2024 if:
- At $24,942, the 2024 costs more than the current year's $22,858 average.
- It adds standard lane-keep assist and adaptive cruise control.
The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, inventory, and feature content, the 2023 is the strongest all-around pick. If your budget is tighter, the 2022 is the better value play, while the 2024 makes sense if you want the newer standard safety setup and are willing to pay more.
