Why it stands out
The 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan stands out as Volkswagen’s best-selling model, and its appeal is easy to understand. It offers room for five people, available all-wheel drive, and more cargo than any family car, which makes it a practical choice for a wide range of buyers. It also earns praise for plenty of cargo space, spaciousness, and easy-to-use technology.
That practicality is a major part of the Tiguan’s identity, especially for shoppers looking for a compact SUV that can handle everyday family duties. At the same time, it is not without drawbacks: the stereo is lacking, and the interior materials feel cheap. Even so, the 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan remains distinctive for combining useful space and straightforward technology in a package that clearly resonates with buyers.

We bought this vehicle for our daughter. It is loaded inside and out. She and I did our research on the VW Tiguan. It is technically on par with every high in car on the market. The panoramic sunroof was a must have for her. Our daughter took the test herself. The ease of handling, acceleration and braking were excellent. Before we returned to the dealership we knew this was the right vehicle for her!

Solid SUV - big enough for family, small enough to get decent gas mileage for an AWD. Base model comes with enough features to leave the competition out of the game for similar SUVs.

Despite the what I read about the sluggishness of this model, its STILL a VW (a little speed demon once it gets going). I love all the features of my car (Panoramic sunroof, car play, LCD odometer area, heated seats). I believe I got GREAT VALUE out of this car! No complaints!!!!

How much does the 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $17,458 |
| Year-Round Low | $17,458 |
| Year-Round High | $19,616 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $19,616 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −11.00% |
Prices have softened 11.00% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 3,313 listings available, which suggests you have a decent amount of inventory to compare.
Is the 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan a good car?
Yes — the 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan earns a 4.5/5 user rating and a 7.33/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Form and function at 9/10.
Drivers consistently praise its comfort, spacious interior, and practicality, and they also point to its safety features and good fuel economy. The Tiguan’s roomy cabin and easy-to-use technology come through as recurring positives, especially if you want a family SUV that feels straightforward to live with.
The trade-offs are familiar: the performance can feel sluggish at times, and the interior materials are described as cheap. That lines up with the overview, which frames the Tiguan as a practical, space-focused SUV rather than a sporty one.
The model’s good and great deals share sits at 36.7%, which gives you a reasonable chance of finding a competitive listing.
Is the 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan reliable?
Owners rate it 4.5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback points to a vehicle that feels dependable in everyday family use, with comfort, practicality, and safety features all reinforcing that impression. The same feedback also highlights good fuel economy and a spacious cabin, both of which tend to matter when you’re counting on a vehicle for regular commuting and family duty.
Volkswagen’s maintenance coverage includes free scheduled maintenance for two years or 20,000 miles, plus roadside assistance for three years or 36,000 miles.
For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is less about outright durability and more about whether the specific vehicle has been cared for consistently and kept in clean condition.
What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 78.9% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still check the history report carefully, because a clean listing percentage does not replace documentation. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that focuses on cabin condition, electronics, and signs of wear, since the Tiguan’s value proposition depends heavily on its space, technology, and day-to-day usability.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The S, SE, SEL, SE R-Line Black, and SEL Premium R-Line each add equipment as you move up the range. Base-trim shoppers should pay close attention to feature gaps, since the higher trims bring more convenience, technology, and safety content.
- Powertrain: Every Tiguan uses a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder with 184 horsepower and 221 pound-feet of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic. Front-wheel drive is standard, and 4Motion all-wheel drive is available on most models.
- Safety package: IQ Drive is standard and includes forward-collision warning, pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. Adaptive cruise control starts with SE trim, lane-departure warning with lane-keep assist starts with SEL, and automatic high-beam headlights are reserved for SEL Premium R-Line.
- Infotainment: MIB3 brings an 8-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, WiFi for up to four devices, SiriusXM 360L, Amazon Alexa compatibility, and Car-Net connected services. The system is available starting with SE trim.
- Fuel efficiency: The Tiguan returns 25 mpg in combined driving with front-wheel drive and 24 mpg with AWD. In testing, the AWD model averaged 22.6 mpg.
Which 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan trim should I buy?
The 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan is offered in 5 trim levels: S, SE, SEL, SE R-Line Black, and SEL Premium R-Line.
Here's the short version:
- S: This is the entry point, so it makes the most sense if you want the Tiguan’s space, standard safety tech, and core practicality at the lowest price. It is the trim to compare first if value matters most.
- SE: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds the MIB3 infotainment system with the 8-inch touchscreen, wireless smartphone integration, and adaptive cruise control.
- SEL: Step up here if you want a more upscale feel and more driver-assistance content, including lane-departure warning with lane-keep assist and Volkswagen Digital Cockpit instrumentation.
- SE R-Line Black: This trim adds sporty R-Line design and equipment upgrades, so it suits you if appearance matters more than pure value.
- SEL Premium R-Line: This is the most fully equipped version, with standard 4Motion AWD, automatic high-beam headlights, front and rear parking sensors, a surround-view camera, and the nine-speaker Fender audio system.
The safety-package progression is important here: adaptive cruise control starts on SE, lane-keep assist starts on SEL, and the surround-view camera is reserved for SEL Premium R-Line.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you’re patient and compare listings carefully.
- Deal availability: 36.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 3,313 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 11.00% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 78.9% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $17,458, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan's resale value?
The current average of $17,458 sits slightly below last year's $19,616.
That price movement suggests the Tiguan has softened enough to create a more approachable entry point for buyers today. For a future seller, that means resale value may depend heavily on condition, mileage, and trim, because the market is already pricing in some depreciation.
If you keep the vehicle clean, well-documented, and in a desirable trim, you improve your odds of standing out when it’s time to sell. The Tiguan’s broad family appeal and practical packaging should help support demand, but buyers will still compare it closely against other compact SUVs.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan safe?
The 2021 Tiguan earns a Top Safety Pick rating from IIHS in SEL and SEL Premium R-Line specification.
It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.
Volkswagen’s IQ Drive suite is standard and includes forward-collision warning, pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. Adaptive cruise control starts with SE trim, lane-departure warning with lane-keep assist starts with SEL, and automatic high-beam headlights are standard on SEL Premium R-Line.
One caveat is that the IIHS recognition applies only to SEL and SEL Premium R-Line because of their high-performing LED headlights. That means trim choice matters if safety equipment is a priority for you.
Should I buy a 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2021 if:
- 36.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 78.9% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 11.00% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It combines roomy packaging, easy-to-use technology, and standard advanced safety features.
Consider the 2020 if:
- At $15,934, the 2020 costs less than the current year's $17,458 average.
- It emphasizes three-row seating and extra passenger capacity.
Consider the 2022 if:
- At $20,468, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $17,458 average.
- It adds updated safety technology to the Tiguan formula.
The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, inventory, and satisfaction, the 2021 is the strongest all-around pick. If your budget is tighter, the 2020 is worth a look for its lower asking price, while the 2022 makes sense if you want the newer update and are willing to pay more.
