Summary
With 3,333 currently listed for sale and an average price of $17,599.00, 32.2% of 2021 Volkswagen Tiguans for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan 4.5 / 5 stars.
80.3% of 2021 Tiguan models on CarGurus are accident free.
The 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan is known for its spacious interior, good fuel economy, and a suite of safety features, making it a practical choice for families.
Why it stands out
The 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan stands out in the crowded compact SUV market due to its spacious interior and family-friendly features. With room for up to seven passengers when equipped with the optional third-row seat, it offers versatility that many competitors lack. The Tiguan's turbocharged 2.0-liter engine provides adequate power, although some drivers have noted a slight lag in acceleration. The vehicle's comfort is enhanced by a well-designed cabin, featuring user-friendly technology and a suite of advanced safety features, including Volkswagen's IQ Drive system. While the interior materials may not feel as premium as some rivals, the Tiguan's overall practicality, combined with its competitive pricing and strong safety ratings, make it an appealing option for buyers seeking a reliable family SUV.

We bought this vehicle for our daughter. It is loaded inside and out. She and I did our research on the VW Tiguan. It is technically on par with every high in car on the market. The panoramic sunroof was a must have for her. Our daughter took the test herself. The ease of handling, acceleration and braking were excellent. Before we returned to the dealership we knew this was the right vehicle for her!

Solid SUV - big enough for family, small enough to get decent gas mileage for an AWD. Base model comes with enough features to leave the competition out of the game for similar SUVs.

Despite the what I read about the sluggishness of this model, its STILL a VW (a little speed demon once it gets going). I love all the features of my car (Panoramic sunroof, car play, LCD odometer area, heated seats). I believe I got GREAT VALUE out of this car! No complaints!!!!

2021 Volkswagen Tiguan Price Trends
CarGurus tracks the prices of millions of used car listings every year. See how the average price of 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan prices has changed over time.
See more price trendsHow much does the 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $17,564 |
| Year-Round Low | $17,565.62 |
| Year-Round High | $19,984.87 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $19,985 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −12.12% |
Prices have softened 12.12% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 3,327 listings available, which suggests solid inventory for shoppers comparing prices and trims.
If you find a listing below $17,565.62, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan a good car?
Yes — the 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan earns a 4.5/5 user rating and a 7.33/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Form and function at 9/10.
Drivers consistently praise its comfort, spacious interior, and practicality as a family SUV. The user feedback also points to good fuel economy and a strong safety reputation, which makes it appealing if you want an easy daily driver with room for people and cargo. On the other hand, the expert review notes that acceleration can feel sluggish at times, and the cabin materials and stereo quality are not class-leading.
For your use case, the Tiguan makes the most sense if you want a compact SUV that leans into family-friendly space, comfort, and everyday usability rather than sporty performance. With 33.2% of listings marked as good or great deals, the market still offers some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan reliable?
Owners rate it 4.5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback highlights comfort, practicality, and a generally dependable family-SUV experience, with drivers also calling out good fuel economy and a spacious cabin. The expert review reinforces that it is a pleasant, composed daily driver, and Volkswagen’s Carefree Coverage adds free scheduled maintenance for two years or 20,000 miles.
That said, used buyers should still pay close attention to maintenance records and overall condition, since long-term ownership risk is always tied to how well the previous owner cared for the vehicle.
What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 80.9% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still run a history report on any candidate, even if it looks clean on the lot. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that checks the cabin, electronics, and drivetrain behavior, since those are the areas where condition differences can matter most on a used SUV. Focus on whether the vehicle has been maintained consistently and whether all convenience and safety features work as expected.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The S, SE, and SEL trims are the core lineup, with SE R-Line Black and SEL Premium R-Line adding sportier design and equipment. Base versions miss some of the higher-end convenience and safety content, including features that arrive on upper trims.
- Powertrain: Every model uses a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder with 184 horsepower and 221 pound-feet of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic. It is adequate, but turbo lag can make it feel slow off the line, and AWD is standard only on the SEL Premium R-Line.
- Safety package: IQ Drive is standard and includes forward-collision warning, pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. Adaptive cruise control starts with SE trim, lane-departure warning with lane-keep assist starts with SEL, and automatic high-beam headlights are reserved for SEL Premium R-Line.
- Infotainment: MIB3 brings an 8-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, faster response times, and connected services. The system is available starting with SE trim, while the SEL Premium R-Line adds a nine-speaker Fender audio system.
- Fuel efficiency: EPA estimates are 25 mpg combined with front-wheel drive and 24 mpg combined with AWD. In testing, the AWD model averaged 22.6 mpg.
Which 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan trim should I buy?
The 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan is offered in 5 trim levels: S, SE, SEL, SE R-Line Black, and SEL Premium R-Line.
Here's the short version:
- Base trim: The S gives you the core Tiguan experience, but it misses adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, and the richer infotainment setup that starts higher up the range.
- Sweet-spot trim: The SE is the best value pick because it adds MIB3 with an 8-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and adaptive cruise control.
- Premium/top trim: The SEL Premium R-Line is the most fully equipped choice, adding the top safety and tech content, including automatic high-beam headlights, surround-view camera capability, and the Fender audio system.
- Off-road trim: None of the trims are positioned as an off-road choice, so you can focus on comfort, tech, and safety instead.
The SEL and SEL Premium R-Line also get the most advanced safety and display content, so they make the strongest case if you want the most complete Tiguan.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, with enough inventory to compare options but still some room to find a strong deal.
- Deal availability: 33.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 3,327 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 12.12% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 80.9% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $17,565.62, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan's resale value?
The current average of $17,564 sits slightly below last year's $19,985.
That price movement suggests the Tiguan has already absorbed a meaningful amount of depreciation, which can help future sellers if they buy at the right price today. A lower entry cost can reduce the amount of value left to lose over the next few years. Strong demand for practical family SUVs can also help support used-market interest when it is time to sell.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan safe?
The 2021 Tiguan earns a Top Safety Pick rating from the IIHS in SEL and SEL Premium R-Line specification.
It earns a 8/10 safety score from our experts.
Volkswagen’s IQ Drive suite is standard and includes forward-collision warning, pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. Adaptive cruise control starts with SE trim, lane-departure warning with lane-keep assist starts with SEL, and automatic high-beam headlights are standard on SEL Premium R-Line. Front and rear parking sensors are not included on S and SE trims, and the top-down surround-view camera is reserved for SEL Premium R-Line.
Should I buy a 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2021 if:
- 33.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 80.9% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 12.12% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It adds MIB3 infotainment with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
Consider the 2020 if:
- At $15,978, the 2020 costs less than the current year's $17,564 average.
- It offers third-row seating and a practical family-focused layout.
Consider the 2022 if:
- At $21,021, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $17,564 average.
- It brings a light refresh with updated styling and a more modern-feeling interior.
The bottom line: The 2021 is the best all-around choice if you want a balanced mix of price, safety, space, and tech. If your priority is saving money, the 2020 is the better value play. If you want the newer look and can stretch your budget, the 2022 is worth a look.
