CarGurus Analysis: 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan
overall

Summary
With 245 currently listed for sale near Baltimore, MD and an average price of $17,141, 39.2% of 2020 Volkswagen Tiguans for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan 4.89 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.67 / 10.
100.0% of 2020 Tiguan models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan stands out in the compact crossover class because it offers three rows of seating, making it a rare choice for buyers who need extra passenger capacity without moving up to a larger SUV. Volkswagen also made it much larger than average for its competitive set to fit those extra seats, and the result is a vehicle that feels especially roomy for the segment. It is also described as the German brand’s best-selling vehicle in the U.S., which adds to its appeal as a practical, mainstream choice.
Beyond its packaging, the Tiguan’s strengths include spaciousness and easy-to-use technology. Those qualities make it attractive to shoppers who value comfort and straightforward day-to-day usability. The tradeoff is that poor handling is listed as a drawback, so while the Tiguan emphasizes space and convenience, it is not the most engaging option to drive. Some owners also wish it had a power liftgate, suggesting that convenience features are not as complete as the cabin’s size and value might imply.

This car is great. I think it was a good value because I also looked at a RAV4 and the RAV4 was more expensive, even though it had the exact same features and the Tiguan even was a bit roomier. The only thing the car is missing is a power lift gate.

I do think this car is a great value. I would compare it to the Audi Q5. I traded an Audi Q3 for it. There is way more space and features. I absolutely love it!

How much does the 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $16,012 |
| Year-Round Low | $15,804 |
| Year-Round High | $18,055 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $18,056 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −11.32% |
Prices have softened 11.32% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 2,459 listings available, which gives you a solid amount of inventory to compare before you buy.
Is the 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan a good car?
Yes — the 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan earns a 4.89/5 user rating and a 7.67/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Form and function and Technology.
Owners consistently praise its value, space, and quality, and they also like the roomy interior and smooth handling. The Tiguan’s three-row packaging and easy-to-use technology make it especially appealing if you want extra passenger capacity without moving up to a larger SUV.
The trade-offs are that poor handling is called out as a drawback, and some owners wish it had a power liftgate. That means you should expect a practical, comfort-first crossover rather than a sporty one.
With 34.2% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have room to shop selectively.
Is the 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan reliable?
Owners rate it 4.89/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
Owners describe it as a vehicle they feel good about for its quality and value, and the feedback points to a dependable ownership experience centered on roomy, everyday usability. The expert evaluation also emphasizes a quiet highway ride and a powertrain that responds cleanly, which supports the sense that it is built for steady daily use.
Volkswagen also includes five years of complimentary Car-Net features, which can make ownership easier with remote access and vehicle-status tools.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that a well-used example may hide wear or deferred maintenance, so condition and service history matter.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan?
At 72.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a careful inspection of bodywork, alignment, and signs of prior repair. Because the Tiguan’s appeal is tied to its space and convenience, you should also focus on cabin condition, electronics, and how well the interior features work in daily use.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base S trim uses a 6.5-inch touchscreen, while SE and higher trims get the much better 8-inch display. The entry trim also misses the leatherette upholstery, heated front seats, and automatic climate control that make the SE more appealing.
- Powertrain: All models use a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder with 184 horsepower and 221 pound-feet of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic. Front-wheel drive is standard, and all-wheel drive is available.
- Safety package: All models include forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, blind spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. Adaptive cruise control with lane-keeping assistance and LED headlights with automatic high beams are reserved for the top SEL trim.
- Infotainment: The base S trim has a 6.5-inch touchscreen, while SE and higher trims get an 8-inch capacitive touchscreen. Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth, and a WiFi hotspot are standard, and Digital Cockpit is available on top SEL trims.
- Fuel efficiency: A front-drive Tiguan earns 25 miles per gallon combined, while the AWD version is rated at 23 mpg combined.
Which 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan trim should I buy?
The 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan is offered in 5 trim levels: S, SE, SE R-Line Black, SEL, SEL Premium R-Line.
Here's the short version:
- S: This is the least expensive way into the Tiguan, but it gives up some of the features that make the SUV feel worthwhile. You get the core space and standard tech, but the smaller touchscreen and simpler cabin make it the least compelling choice unless price is your top priority.
- SE: This is the best-value trim. It adds the 8-inch infotainment touchscreen, leatherette upholstery, heated front seats, and automatic climate control, which makes the Tiguan feel much more complete without a huge price jump.
- SE R-Line Black: This trim mainly adds cosmetic upgrades such as alloy wheels and R-Line badging, so it makes sense if you want the styling treatment and are willing to pay more for appearance.
- SEL: This is the trim to choose if you want the stronger safety and convenience mix. It adds adaptive cruise control with lane-keeping assist and other luxury equipment, but it costs a meaningful amount more.
- SEL Premium R-Line: This is the top-end choice if you want the most equipment and all-wheel drive, but it sits at the highest price point and is best for shoppers who want a loaded Tiguan rather than the best value.
Adaptive cruise control with lane-keeping assist is reserved for the SEL trim, while the top SEL Premium R-Line adds the most equipment overall.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan?
This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.
- Deal availability: 34.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 2,459 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 11.32% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 72.1% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $15,804, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan's resale value?
The current average of $16,012 sits slightly below last year's $18,056.
That decline suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you as a buyer but may limit upside if you plan to sell soon. If you buy at the right price, you reduce the chance of taking a steep depreciation hit in the near term. The Tiguan’s practical appeal and strong owner satisfaction should help support demand, but resale will still depend heavily on trim, condition, and mileage.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.89/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan safe?
The Tiguan earns a Top Safety Pick rating from IIHS, but only for top-of-the-line SEL Premium models with LED headlights.
It earns a 6/10 safety score from our experts.
Volkswagen made the standard safety package stronger for 2020 by adding forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, blind spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert to all models. Adaptive cruise control with lane-keeping assistance and LED headlights with automatic high beams are reserved for the top SEL trim, so lower trims miss some of the more advanced driver-assistance features.
One important caveat is that most Tiguans are equipped with halogen headlights, which IIHS rates poor. That makes trim choice especially important if safety equipment matters to you.
Should I buy a 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 34.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 72.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 11.32% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.89/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It stands out for three-row seating in the compact crossover class.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $17,523, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $16,012 average.
- It adds a refreshed infotainment update and broader appeal.
The bottom line: If you want the better value today, the 2020 is the smarter buy because prices are softer and inventory is healthy. If you can spend more and want the newer-year update, the 2021 is the cleaner alternative, but price-sensitive buyers should focus on the 2020’s stronger market position.
