CarGurus Analysis: 2019 Toyota Highlander Hybrid
overall

Summary
With 285 currently listed for sale and an average price of $28,069.00, 34.4% of 2019 Toyota Highlander Hybrids for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2019 Toyota Highlander Hybrid 4.86 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 6.67 / 10.
74.4% of 2019 Highlander Hybrid models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2019 Toyota Highlander Hybrid stands out as a spacious, family-oriented SUV that also earns praise for its great safety ratings. It is described as Toyota’s reliable rugrat hauler, and owners commonly appreciate its quiet ride, excellent fuel economy, comfortable driving experience, and reliability. Those strengths make it appealing to buyers who want a practical hybrid with a strong reputation for everyday use.
At the same time, this Highlander Hybrid is clearly in the final year of its third generation and is described as looking a little long in the tooth, especially in the tech department. The 2019 model adds LED fog lights to its two top-tier trims, and LE and XLE trims also get black plastic cladding for their rocker panels, but otherwise the vehicle remains largely unchanged. Its drawbacks include outdated technology, an irritating transmission, and poor value for money, so it is best suited to shoppers who prioritize space, efficiency, and dependability over the latest features.

It appears to be a great car, has everything I wanted except a factory installed tow hitch to transport bikes on a platform rack . I do not want a low hanging aftermarket tow hitch.

LE model but has plenty of whistles. Drives and handles great. Original owner bought with leather seats so that was a bonus. Great SUV!

Spacious, reliable, very economical with more than adequate accessories. It provides quite a luxurious and extremely comfortable ride and you certainly can’t complain of how much space you have in it. We’ve had no difficulties whatsoever. We bought it with an extended warranty, which clearly wasn’t necessary. The Limited edition of this vehicle is fantastic.

The trade-offs are clear: the technology feels outdated, and the transmission is a recurring complaint. The overview also points to poor value for money, so this is best for you if space, efficiency, and dependability matter more than the latest features.
With 34.2% of listings marked as good or great deals, there’s enough market activity to make selective shopping worthwhile.
Is the 2019 Toyota Highlander Hybrid reliable?
Owners rate it 4.86/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
Owners repeatedly describe it as reliable, and the broader feedback also points to a trouble-free, dependable ownership experience that you can count on over time. The expert evaluation reinforces that reputation by emphasizing Toyota’s safety and reliability strengths, while also noting that the hybrid setup is aimed at practical everyday use.
The ownership picture is still worth a careful look on the used market, because long-term upkeep and condition matter more once the vehicle has already seen several years of service.
What should I look for when buying a used 2019 Toyota Highlander Hybrid?
At 72.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a thorough inspection of bodywork, alignment, and signs of prior repair. Focus on overall condition, because a clean-looking listing can still hide accident-related issues or wear that affects long-term value.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The LE starts with a 3.5-liter V6, standard all-wheel drive, a windshield-wiper de-icer, keyless entry and ignition, dual-zone automatic climate control, and a 6.1-inch touchscreen. The XLE adds a sunroof, heated power front seats, tri-zone climate control, upgraded interior materials, fog lights, a power liftgate, a second-row power outlet, satellite and HD radio, navigation, an 8.1-inch touchscreen, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. The Limited adds leather seat heating and ventilation, driver’s seat memory, second-row captain’s chairs, LED running lights, rear parking sensors, and a 12-speaker JBL stereo. The Limited Platinum adds automatic wipers, a 360-degree parking camera, front parking sensors, steering-wheel heat, rear outboard seat heat, and a panoramic sunroof.
- Powertrain: The hybrid uses a 3.5-liter V6 with 3 electric motors for 306 net system horsepower, paired with a CVT. It is quick enough for everyday driving and highway passing, but the transmission can be noisy, and towing is rated up to 3,500 pounds.
- Safety package: Every model gets a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, auto high-beams, dynamic cruise control, and lane-departure alert with steering assist. XLE and higher add blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert.
- Infotainment: The base model uses a 6.1-inch touchscreen, while the XLE upgrades to an 8.1-inch screen with navigation, satellite radio, and HD radio. The system does not include Android Auto or Apple CarPlay.
- Fuel efficiency: The hybrid is rated at 29 mpg city, 27 mpg highway, and 28 combined, with the base LE Hybrid at 29 combined.
Which 2019 Toyota Highlander Hybrid trim should I buy?
The 2019 Toyota Highlander Hybrid is offered in 4 trim levels: LE, XLE, Limited, Limited Platinum.
Here's the short version:
- LE: This is the best-value starting point if you want the hybrid’s standard safety suite, standard AWD, V6 power, and the essentials without paying for extras you may not need.
- XLE: This is the trim to target if you want the best balance of equipment and price, because it adds the most meaningful comfort, tech, and safety upgrades over the LE.
- Limited: Choose this if you want a more upscale cabin, the JBL audio system, and the added comfort of heated and ventilated front seats and second-row captain’s chairs.
- Limited Platinum: Pick this only if you want the most convenience features, including the 360-degree camera, front parking sensors, and additional seat and steering-wheel heating.
The safety package is a major part of the Highlander Hybrid’s appeal, and the XLE is the first trim to add blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2019 Toyota Highlander Hybrid?
This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.
- Deal availability: 34.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 295 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.15% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 72.9% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $26,575.95, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2019 Toyota Highlander Hybrid's resale value?
The current average of $27,851 sits slightly below last year's $29,677.
That price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you as a buyer today but may limit upside if you plan to resell soon. If you buy well and keep the vehicle in strong condition, you can still protect value better than average.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.86/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2019 Toyota Highlander Hybrid safe?
It earns a 5-star rating from the government’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
It earns a 8/10 safety score from our experts.
Every Highlander Hybrid comes standard with a pre-collision system featuring pedestrian detection, auto high-beams, dynamic cruise control, and lane-departure alert with steering assist. If you move up to the XLE or higher, you also get blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert.
The main caveat is braking performance: the expert review notes that stopping distances are long and the vehicle is not especially composed under hard braking. That does not erase the strong safety equipment, but it is worth keeping in mind if you want the most reassuring road manners.
Should I buy a 2019 Toyota Highlander Hybrid or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2019 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2019 if:
- 34.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 72.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.15% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.86/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It is the final year of the third generation, with added LED fog lights on the top trims and a familiar, proven hybrid setup.
Consider the 2020 if:
- At $31,829, the 2020 costs more than the current year's $27,851 average.
- It brings a major redesign and a more fuel-efficient new-generation setup.
The bottom line: If you want the better value today, the 2019 is the smarter buy because prices have softened and the model still delivers the space, safety, and reliability that matter most. If you care more about newer design, updated tech, and a more modern driving experience, it makes sense to stretch for the 2020 instead.
