Three-row sport utility vehicles such as the Toyota Highlander are popular with American buyers who need room for the whole family and prefer to sit higher off the ground than they would in a typical sedan or minivan. Toyota meets their needs with a diverse range of three-row SUVs, including the 2026 Highlander Hybrid. It’s worth noting that the 2027 Highlander is an all-new model that ditches gasoline entirely in favor of an electric powertrain, but it’s the 2026 Highlander Hybrid we’re discussing here.

What’s New for the 2026 Toyota Highlander Hybrid
Toyota reduced the number of Highlander Hybrid models on dealership lots for the 2026 model year. The entry LE trim level was discontinued in 2025 and remains off the board in 2026. Also gone are the XLE Nightshade and a 25th Anniversary Edition that was unique to the 2025 model year, which was the SUV’s 25th on the market. That leaves the Highlander Hybrid XLE, the Hybrid Limited, and the Hybrid Platinum. All-wheel drive (AWD) is standard on all versions for 2026.
Design
Now in its fourth generation in the U.S., the Toyota Highlander is a common sight on American roads. The current version was released for the 2020 model year, and while there have been some updates over the past several years, the Highlander Hybrid’s appearance hasn’t really changed much. With its blunt grille, heavily sculpted bodysides, and decent ground clearance, the 2026 Highlander Hybrid looks handsome and rugged.
Powertrain
All 2026 Toyota Highlander Hybrids share the same 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine, which is mated to three electric motors and a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT). One of those motors exclusively powers the rear axle, which means every version has AWD. With fuel economy ratings of up to 35 mpg in the city, 35 mpg on the highway, and 35 mpg combined, the Highlander Hybrid is one of the most fuel-efficient three-row crossovers on sale and it can tow up to 3,500 pounds.

Interior
The 2026 Toyota Highlander has plenty of room for adults in the first and middle rows, but the third row is a little tight, so buyers looking for a more spacious third row should take a look at the larger Grand Highlander. In base XLE trim, the Toyota Highlander Hybrid comes standard with cloth upholstery and seating for seven passengers with second-row captain’s chairs or eight passengers with a middle-row bench—a no-cost option. The Highlander Hybrid Limited gets standard leather upholstery, while the top-end Hybrid Platinum offers upgraded leather in three color choices.
Technology
Highlander Hybrid XLE models are fitted with a small 8-inch touchscreen, but at least wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard. The Hybrid Limited and Hybrid Platinum feature a larger 12.3-inch screen and a matching 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster. Only the Platinum model comes standard with a 10-inch head-up display. An 11-speaker JBL audio system comes with the Hybrid Limited and Hybrid Platinum trim levels.
