CarGurus Analysis: 2019 Toyota Highlander Hybrid
overall

Summary
With 307 currently listed for sale and an average price of $27,814, 33.9% of 2019 Toyota Highlander Hybrids for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2019 Toyota Highlander Hybrid 4.86 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 6.67 / 10.

Why it stands out
The 2019 Toyota Highlander Hybrid stands out as a spacious, family-focused SUV with strong safety credentials. It is also described as Toyota’s reliable rugrat hauler, and owners commonly praise its quiet ride, excellent fuel economy, comfortable driving experience, and reliability. Those traits make it appealing to buyers who want a practical hybrid with a reputation for dependability and everyday ease of use.
At the same time, this Highlander Hybrid is clearly in the twilight of its generation, and its technology is described as looking a little long in the tooth. The 2019 model adds LED fog lights to its two top-tier trims, while LE and XLE trims gain black plastic cladding for the rocker panels, but otherwise the year is largely unchanged. Its drawbacks include outdated technology, an irritating transmission, and poor value for money, and some owners also note the lack of a factory-installed tow hitch.

It appears to be a great car, has everything I wanted except a factory installed tow hitch to transport bikes on a platform rack . I do not want a low hanging aftermarket tow hitch.

LE model but has plenty of whistles. Drives and handles great. Original owner bought with leather seats so that was a bonus. Great SUV!

Spacious, reliable, very economical with more than adequate accessories. It provides quite a luxurious and extremely comfortable ride and you certainly can’t complain of how much space you have in it. We’ve had no difficulties whatsoever. We bought it with an extended warranty, which clearly wasn’t necessary. The Limited edition of this vehicle is fantastic.

The expert review also emphasizes that safety and reliability are major reasons to consider it, and the model’s practical, family-hauling character supports that reputation. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is less about basic durability and more about living with aging technology and the hybrid system’s value proposition over time.
What should I look for when buying a used 2019 Toyota Highlander Hybrid?
At 68.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a higher-mileage example. Focus on overall condition, signs of prior bodywork, and whether the cabin and electronics still feel consistent with the asking price.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The LE is the base trim, but it still gets a 3.5-liter V6, standard all-wheel drive, a windshield-wiper de-icer, keyless entry and ignition, dual-zone automatic climate control, and a 6.1-inch touchscreen. The XLE adds a sunroof, heated power front seats, tri-zone climate control, upgraded interior materials, fog lights, a power liftgate, a second-row power outlet, satellite and HD radio, navigation, an 8.1-inch touchscreen, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. The Limited adds leather seat heating and ventilation, driver’s seat memory, second-row captain’s chairs, LED running lights, rear parking sensors, and a 12-speaker JBL stereo.
- Powertrain: The hybrid setup uses a 3.5-liter V6 with 3 electric motors for 306 net system horsepower. It has strong around-town and highway passing power, but the CVT is described as loud and the hybrid system is not especially efficient in real-world use.
- Safety package: Every Highlander Hybrid comes with a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, auto high-beams, dynamic cruise control, and lane-departure alert with steering assist. XLE and higher trims add blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert.
- Infotainment: The base model gets a 6.1-inch touchscreen, while the XLE upgrades to an 8.1-inch touchscreen with navigation, satellite radio, and HD radio. The system lacks Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, and OTA capability is not mentioned.
- Fuel efficiency: The hybrid is rated at 29 mpg city, 27 mpg highway, and 28 mpg combined; the base LE Hybrid is rated at 29 mpg combined.
Which 2019 Toyota Highlander Hybrid trim should I buy?
The 2019 Toyota Highlander Hybrid is offered in 4 trim levels: LE, XLE, Limited, and Limited Platinum.
Here's the short version:
- LE: This is the best-value starting point because it already gives you the hybrid V6, standard AWD, strong safety equipment, and the core convenience features you need. If you want the lowest entry price without giving up the Highlander Hybrid’s main appeal, this is the trim to target.
- XLE: This is the sweet spot for most shoppers because it adds the biggest everyday upgrades: a sunroof, heated power front seats, tri-zone climate control, navigation, a larger touchscreen, and extra driver-assistance tech. If you want the best balance of comfort, tech, and value, this is the trim to buy.
- Limited: Choose this if you want a more upscale cabin, seat ventilation, memory settings, second-row captain’s chairs, rear parking sensors, and the JBL audio system. It’s the right pick if comfort and family convenience matter more than price.
- Limited Platinum: This is the most feature-rich version, with a 360-degree parking camera, front parking sensors, automatic wipers, heated steering wheel, heated rear outboard seats, and a panoramic sunroof. It suits you best if you want the most convenience and don’t mind paying for it.
Go with the XLE or higher if you want blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2019 Toyota Highlander Hybrid?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently but still move quickly on the right listing.
- Deal availability: 34.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 311 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.85% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 68.5% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $26,575, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2019 Toyota Highlander Hybrid's resale value?
The current average of $27,779 sits slightly below last year's $29,821.
That price decline suggests the market has become a bit more favorable for buyers, but it also means a future seller may need to price competitively to stand out. The current range still shows healthy demand for the model, especially among shoppers who value space, safety, and hybrid efficiency.
If you buy well now and keep the vehicle in strong condition, you should have a reasonable path to resale later. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.86/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2019 Toyota Highlander Hybrid safe?
The 2019 Toyota Highlander Hybrid earns a 5-star overall rating from NHTSA and was named a Top Safety Pick by the IIHS.
It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.
Every Highlander Hybrid comes standard with a pre-collision system featuring pedestrian detection, auto high-beams, dynamic cruise control, and lane-departure alert with steering assist. If you move up to the XLE or higher, you also get blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert.
The main caveat is braking performance: the expert review says stopping distances are long and hard braking feels less composed than expected. That doesn’t erase the safety equipment, but it is worth keeping in mind if you’re comparing used examples.
Should I buy a 2019 Toyota Highlander Hybrid or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2019 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2019 if:
- 34.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 68.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.85% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.86/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It adds LED fog lights to the top trims and black rocker-panel cladding on LE and XLE.
Consider the 2020 if:
- At $32,019, the 2020 costs more than the current year's $27,779 average.
- It brings a major redesign with a new platform and a more fuel-efficient hybrid system.
The bottom line: If you want the better value today, the 2019 is the smarter buy because prices have eased and the model still delivers the core Highlander Hybrid strengths. If you’re willing to pay more for a newer-generation redesign and stronger efficiency, the 2020 is the better long-term alternative.
