CarGurus Analysis: 2019 Toyota Highlander Hybrid
overall

Summary
With 301 currently listed for sale and an average price of $27,862, 34.6% of 2019 Toyota Highlander Hybrids for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2019 Toyota Highlander Hybrid 4.86 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 6.67 / 10.
71.4% of 2019 Highlander Hybrid models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2019 Toyota Highlander Hybrid stands out as a spacious, family-focused SUV with strong safety credentials. It is also described as Toyota’s reliable rugrat hauler, and owners commonly praise its quiet ride, excellent fuel economy, comfortable driving experience, and reliability. Those traits make it appealing to buyers who want a practical hybrid with a reputation for dependability and everyday ease of use.
At the same time, this Highlander Hybrid is clearly in the twilight of its generation, and its technology is described as looking a little long in the tooth. The 2019 model adds LED fog lights to its two top-tier trims, while LE and XLE trims gain black plastic cladding for the rocker panels, but otherwise the year is largely unchanged. Its drawbacks include outdated technology, an irritating transmission, and poor value for money, and some owners also note the lack of a factory-installed tow hitch.

It appears to be a great car, has everything I wanted except a factory installed tow hitch to transport bikes on a platform rack . I do not want a low hanging aftermarket tow hitch.

LE model but has plenty of whistles. Drives and handles great. Original owner bought with leather seats so that was a bonus. Great SUV!

Spacious, reliable, very economical with more than adequate accessories. It provides quite a luxurious and extremely comfortable ride and you certainly can’t complain of how much space you have in it. We’ve had no difficulties whatsoever. We bought it with an extended warranty, which clearly wasn’t necessary. The Limited edition of this vehicle is fantastic.

The expert review also emphasizes that the Highlander Hybrid is built around a dependable hybrid setup with a standard V6-based powertrain and all-wheel drive, which supports everyday confidence. If you want a used SUV you can keep for the long haul, the main risk is paying extra for hybrid ownership without getting a big enough efficiency payoff.
What should I look for when buying a used 2019 Toyota Highlander Hybrid?
At 70.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re comparing multiple listings at similar prices. Focus on overall condition, signs of prior bodywork, and whether the vehicle’s equipment and trim match the seller’s description.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The LE is the base trim, but it still includes a strong standard safety suite, all-wheel drive, keyless entry and ignition, dual-zone automatic climate control, a windshield-wiper de-icer, and a 6.1-inch touchscreen. The XLE adds a sunroof, heated power front seats, tri-zone climate control, upgraded interior materials, fog lights, a power liftgate, a second-row power outlet, satellite radio, HD radio, navigation, an 8.1-inch touchscreen, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. The Limited adds leather front seats with heat and ventilation, driver’s seat memory, second-row captain’s chairs, LED running lights, rear parking sensors, and a 12-speaker JBL stereo. The Limited Platinum adds automatic wipers, a 360-degree parking camera, front parking sensors, steering-wheel heat, rear outboard seat heat, and a panoramic sunroof.
- Powertrain: The hybrid uses a 3.5-liter V6 with 3 electric motors for 306 net system horsepower. It has plenty of power for around-town driving and highway passing, but the CVT is a weak point, and the setup is also described as capable of 29 mpg city, 27 mpg highway, and 28 combined.
- Safety package: Every trim gets a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, auto high-beams, dynamic cruise control, and lane-departure alert with steering assist. The XLE and higher trims add blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert.
- Infotainment: The base trim has a 6.1-inch touchscreen, while the XLE moves to an 8.1-inch touchscreen with navigation, satellite radio, and HD radio. The system does not include wireless CarPlay or Android Auto.
- Fuel efficiency: The hybrid is described with 29 mpg city, 27 mpg highway, and 28 combined, with the base LE Hybrid at 29 combined.
Which 2019 Toyota Highlander Hybrid trim should I buy?
The 2019 Toyota Highlander Hybrid is offered in 4 trim levels: LE, XLE, Limited, Limited Platinum.
Here's the short version:
- LE: This is the best-value starting point if you want the Highlander Hybrid’s core strengths without paying for extras. You still get the standard safety suite, all-wheel drive, the V6 hybrid powertrain, and the basic convenience features that make the model appealing in the first place.
- XLE: This is the trim to target if you want the best balance of equipment and price. It adds the most meaningful everyday upgrades, including heated power front seats, tri-zone climate control, a power liftgate, navigation, and blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert.
- Limited: Choose this if you want a more upscale cabin and better comfort features. The leather front seats with heat and ventilation, driver memory, second-row captain’s chairs, rear parking sensors, and JBL audio make it feel more premium.
- Limited Platinum: This is the top choice if you want the most convenience and parking aids. The 360-degree camera, front parking sensors, steering-wheel heat, rear seat heat, and panoramic sunroof make it the most fully equipped version.
The XLE is the best-value trim, and the XLE and higher trims are the ones that add blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2019 Toyota Highlander Hybrid?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you’re patient.
- Deal availability: 35.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 309 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.71% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 70.6% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $26,575, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2019 Toyota Highlander Hybrid's resale value?
The current average of $27,861 sits slightly below last year's $29,864.
That decline suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you as a buyer today but may limit upside if you plan to resell soon. For a future seller, the key takeaway is that this model year is holding value reasonably well, but not strongly enough to suggest rapid appreciation.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.86/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2019 Toyota Highlander Hybrid safe?
The 2019 Toyota Highlander Hybrid earns a five-star overall rating from NHTSA and was named a Top Safety Pick by the IIHS.
It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.
Every trim comes standard with a pre-collision system featuring pedestrian detection, auto high-beams, dynamic cruise control, and lane-departure alert with steering assist. If you move up to the XLE or higher, you also get blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert.
The main caveat is braking performance: the expert review says stopping distances are long and the vehicle is not very composed under hard braking. That doesn’t erase the strong safety equipment, but it is worth keeping in mind if you want the most reassuring driving feel.
Should I buy a 2019 Toyota Highlander Hybrid or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2019 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2019 if:
- 35.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 70.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.71% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.86/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It’s the final year of this generation, with only minor updates and added LED fog lights on the top trims.
Consider the 2020 if:
- At $32,000, the 2020 costs more than the current year's $27,861 average.
- It brings a major redesign with a new platform and a more modern hybrid setup.
The bottom line: If you want the lower price and are comfortable with older tech, the 2019 is the smarter buy. If you’d rather pay more for a newer-generation Highlander Hybrid with a major redesign, the 2020 is the better long-term pick. For price-sensitive buyers, the 2019 offers the stronger value proposition today.
