2023 Lexus GX Reviews Summary

Thanks to the rise of car-based crossovers, today’s body-on-frame SUVs appeal to buyers with specific use-cases in mind: towing and driving off-road. Luxury SUVs like the 2023 Lexus GX appeal to an even narrower cross-section of buyers: those who want to tow or drive off-road, and do either in style and comfort. With a V8 engine as its trump card, the GX remains compelling amid its small pool of competition, but due to a combination of age and a lack of innovation, Lexus’s only real off-road SUV has fallen out of favor for anyone not enamored by a V8 growl.

2024 Chevrolet Traverse Reviews Summary

The 2024 Chevrolet Traverse has gone from being something of a wallflower to becoming one of the more stand-out choices among midsize SUVs with three rows of seating. That’s because Chevrolet’s design and engineering team did its homework when it came time to update this third generation of the Traverse, a model that has featured in the brand’s lineup since its introduction back for the 2009 model year.

The 2024 Chevy Traverse is taller, wider, and longer than the outgoing variant. It’s also much more memorable to look at; following current SUV trends, Chevrolet gave the Traverse a more rugged appearance that borrows from both the full-size Tahoe SUV and Sierra pickup truck. Styling is always subjective, but in this instance, we think it’s fair to say Chevy got things right.

Verdict: More important than any additional visual bravado is that the 2024 Traverse has been improved in countless other ways. It has more standard driver aids, such as blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert. There is more space for passengers, particularly those seated in the third row. And the infotainment system gets a much larger touchscreen.

Look and feel

2023 Lexus GX

7/10

2024 Chevrolet Traverse

8/10

The 2023 Lexus GX had a commanding presence with its massive spindle grille, 8.1 inches of ground clearance, and an overall height of 74.2 inches. The front end appeared ready to dominate the road, framed by large headlights that accentuated its distinctive face. The GX Black Line Special Edition, limited to 3,000 units, returned with three paint colors: Obsidian, Eminent White Pearl, and Nori Green Pearl. Despite its luxury badge, the GX's short 109.8-inch wheelbase and minimal overhangs suggested it was built for off-road adventures. The interior, however, was a mix of luxury and disappointment, with heated and cooled front seats and impressive leather upholstery, but an overabundance of plastic materials.

In contrast, the 2024 Chevrolet Traverse offered a more modern and versatile design. Available in four trims—LS, LT, Z71, and RS—the Z71 was the new addition aimed at moderate off-roading. The Traverse's pricing was competitive, starting at $38,995 for the LS and going up to $55,595 for the RS. Our Z71 test vehicle, priced at $47,795, featured gloss black-painted 18-inch alloy wheels and Iridescent Pearl Tricoat paint. The interior was highlighted by "Torch Red" accents and optional synthetic leather seating. The Traverse's design was practical, with Smart Slide second-row seats and a power-folding third row, making it a versatile choice for families.

Performance

2023 Lexus GX

6/10

2024 Chevrolet Traverse

7/10

The 2023 Lexus GX was defined by its 4.6-liter V8 engine, producing 301 horsepower and 329 lb-ft of torque, paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. While not the most powerful on paper, the V8 delivered a satisfying linear power rise and a distinctive roar. The GX had a towing capacity of 6,500 pounds but lagged in fuel economy, with EPA estimates of 15 mpg city, 19 highway, and 16 combined. The GX's weight made it roll through corners, but its predictable handling and strong brakes provided a manageable driving experience. The Torsen torque-sensing limited-slip differential and standard 4WD system made it capable in various off-road conditions.

The 2024 Chevrolet Traverse, on the other hand, replaced its previous 310-horsepower 3.6-liter V6 with a turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine, producing 328 horsepower and 326 lb-ft of torque. This new engine offered more power and torque than the old V6. The Traverse's AWD system, especially in the Z71 trim, featured a dual-clutch arrangement for better grip in slippery conditions. The Traverse provided acceptable acceleration and passing power, with a surprisingly nice exhaust growl. The steering was adequate for its size, and the ride quality was exemplary, even with all-terrain tires. Fuel economy estimates ranged from 18 mpg city, 26 highway, and 21 combined for the FWD Limited trim to 17/25/20 for the AWD Limited.

Form and function

2023 Lexus GX

6/10

2024 Chevrolet Traverse

8/10

The 2023 Lexus GX offered ample cubby space, with a deep center console bin, convenient cupholders, and two USB-A ports. The decision to stick with hard buttons for controls was a blessing for those who preferred physical interfaces. The second row was comfortable, with captain's chairs and good legroom, but the third row was too tight for regular use. The side-hinged trunk door was cumbersome, and cargo space was limited to 11.6 cubic feet behind the third row, 46.7 cubic feet with the third row folded, and 64.7 cubic feet with both rows down.

The 2024 Chevrolet Traverse provided more versatility with seating for eight in the base LS model and seven in the higher trims. The Smart Slide second-row seats and power-folding third row made accessing and expanding cargo space easy. The Traverse offered 22.9 cubic feet of cargo space behind the third row, expanding to 96 cubic feet with both rows folded. Storage nooks and cubbies were plentiful, including a hidden storage area under the center console and an underfloor storage bin in the cargo bay. The power-operated driver's seat and Autosense power liftgate added to the convenience.

Technology

2023 Lexus GX

6/10

2024 Chevrolet Traverse

9/10

The 2023 Lexus GX featured a 10.3-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Amazon Alexa. The Lexus Remote Touch Interface was still present but unnecessary due to the improved touchscreen. The GX included three years of Lexus Enform Remote and a 17-speaker Mark Levinson premium stereo. However, the infotainment system felt dated compared to newer Lexus models, with lagging touch response and less crisp graphics. The GX excelled in off-road capability with a real 4WD system, Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System, and the Off-Road Package.

The 2024 Chevrolet Traverse impressed with its 17.7-inch infotainment touchscreen, standard on all models, and an 11-inch digital instrument display. The Google-based software provided intuitive voice commands and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The wireless charging pad was effective, and physical controls for volume and HVAC functions were appreciated. The Traverse also offered Super Cruise, a hands-free driving aid, expanding its functionality to single-lane roadways. However, the placement of the driving mode button and headlight controls within the infotainment system was less ideal.

Safety

2023 Lexus GX

6/10

2024 Chevrolet Traverse

8/10

The 2023 Lexus GX had not been crash-tested by NHTSA or IIHS, but it included advanced driver assistance systems like automatic emergency braking, lane-departure alert, adaptive cruise control, parking assist, and automatic high beams. Despite its older design, the GX's safety features were up-to-date.

The 2024 Chevrolet Traverse also had not undergone crash tests by NHTSA or IIHS at the time of our test drive. However, it came equipped with a comprehensive suite of driver aids, including automatic emergency braking with cyclist and pedestrian detection, lane-keep assist, lane-departure warning, blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control, traffic-sign recognition, side-exit assist, rear pedestrian alert, and a surround-view parking camera.
