2023 Genesis GV70 Reviews Summary

The definition of luxury has changed. No matter where you look in the various premium vehicle segments, there are entrants that you may not have seen decades ago. From performance SUVs to subcompact crossovers, there are new takes on upscale vehicles. But just as crucially is the entrance of new players. In 2015, the Genesis brand was officially spun off from Hyundai. And with the brand’s expansion into various segments, a compact like the 2023 Genesis GV70 was a must.

The GV70 was introduced for the 2022 model year and for 2023, an all-electric model joins the lineup. We evaluated the GV70 on the whole, but with a special focus on how effective the 2023 Genesis GV70 Electrified is as an EV and as a compact luxury crossover.

2023 Acura RDX Reviews Summary

The Acura RDX may not be the newest luxury SUV, but it can still compete against newer rivals thanks to its strong performance, high levels of comfort, and relatively affordable price. We're no fans of its infotainment interface, but we think most shoppers will eventually get used to its idiosyncrasies.

Look and feel
2023 Genesis GV70
8/10
2023 Acura RDX
6/10

The 2023 Genesis GV70 showcased a design that drew inspiration from its sedan sibling, the G70, particularly above the belt-line. Its split-bar headlights and a distinctive chrome line that curved from behind the rear window were notable design elements that connected it visually to the sedan. This chrome bar cleverly suggested a coupe-like SUV without compromising versatility. Inside, the GV70's cabin was a testament to luxury, featuring top-notch materials and excellent fit and finish. The design was a harmonious blend of contemporary and classic, with climate controls integrated into a curving bezel and a touchscreen that rose organically from the dash. The GV70's dash included a full touchscreen, a rotary dial, and button controls, offering a user-friendly interface. The physical rollers on the center console and steering wheel were a practical touch, preferred over touch capacitive controls found in some competitors.

In contrast, the 2023 Acura RDX was known for its sharp, angular style, though it remained conventional enough to blend in with the crowd. The signature Acura grille, flanked by sleek wraparound headlights, gave the front a sporty and aggressive look. The side featured a distinctive character line that suggested forward movement, while the rear was more conventional. Inside, the RDX took a different approach with a vertical cockpit layout, emphasizing performance with gear-selector buttons and a drive-mode dial. The 10.2-inch infotainment display sat atop the dash, and the instrument panel combined digital and analog elements. While the interior wasn't as modern as some rivals, it offered a familiar feel for those averse to new glass cockpits.

Performance

2023 Acura RDX
6/10

The 2023 Genesis GV70 offered two gas-powered engine options: a turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine producing 300 horsepower and 311 pound-feet of torque, and a twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 engine delivering 375 horsepower and 391 pound-feet of torque. Both engines were paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. The turbo-four provided ample power for most driving situations, while the V6 appealed to performance enthusiasts with its extra grunt and throaty engine note. The GV70 balanced comfort and sharp handling, offering a refined driving experience. The Electrified GV70 featured a 77.4-kWh battery powering two electric motors, producing a combined 429 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque. It offered a smooth acceleration and a Boost Mode for an extra power surge. The electric GV70 had a range of 236 miles and supported fast charging.

The 2023 Acura RDX was powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine generating 272 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque, paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission. It came standard with front-wheel drive, while all-wheel drive was available. The RDX accelerated to 60 mph in 6.7 seconds, offering adequate power for most drivers. The engine and exhaust had a pleasing tone, and the transmission delivered power smoothly. The RDX's handling inspired confidence, with well-managed body roll and a comfortable ride. Acura's advanced AWD system provided excellent traction, making it sporty yet comfortable.

Form and function

2023 Acura RDX
7/10

The 2023 Genesis GV70 offered 56.9 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seats folded and 28.9 cubic feet with the seats in use. It featured a hands-free power liftgate and decently large cupholders in the center console. The front seats were comfortable, but rear legroom was tighter, requiring front-row occupants to adjust their seats. The rear bench reclined for added comfort.

The 2023 Acura RDX provided ample space in the front seats, with additional power adjustments in top trims. The rear seats accommodated average-sized adults, though taller passengers might find headroom limited. The RDX offered 31.1 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats, expandable to 79.8 cubic feet with the seats folded. A deep bin under the cargo floor added versatility. The cabin featured various storage options, though the center stack's design took up unnecessary space.

The 2023 Genesis GV70 came with a 14.5-inch touchscreen infotainment system, featuring navigation, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. The system was user-friendly, with large icons and logical menus. It included four USB ports, wireless device charging, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and a nine-speaker stereo system. Ambient lighting and a digital instrument panel were available.

The 2023 Acura RDX used a touchpad infotainment controller, which was challenging to use while driving. The dashtop display was not a touchscreen, but Apple CarPlay and Android Auto improved the experience. The system featured sharp graphics and quick responses. The RDX came with a Wi-Fi hotspot and remote monitoring via the Acuralink app. The top A-Spec Advanced trim included a 16-speaker ELS audio system.

The 2023 Acura RDX received top safety ratings from the NHTSA and IIHS. It came standard with advanced safety features like forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, and lane-keep assist. The Technology package added parking sensors, while the Advance package included a surround-view camera system and a head-up display.
