2022 Lexus GX Reviews Summary

Based on the same rugged traditional body-on-frame SUV platform as the Toyota 4Runner, the 2022 Lexus GX is something akin to a Japanese Land Rover. Designed for maximum off-roading capability and only then refined for use as a luxurious daily driver, it has a standard V8 engine, standard four-wheel drive (4WD), and a standard unquenchable thirst for fuel. And though Lexus markets the GX as a three-row, seven-passenger SUV, it is best used to carry five people and 46.7 cubic feet of cargo behind its second-row seat.

2023 Acura RDX Reviews Summary

The Acura RDX may not be the newest luxury SUV, but it can still compete against newer rivals thanks to its strong performance, high levels of comfort, and relatively affordable price. We're no fans of its infotainment interface, but we think most shoppers will eventually get used to its idiosyncrasies.

Look and feel

2022 Lexus GX

4/10

2023 Acura RDX

6/10

The 2022 Lexus GX 460 Black Line Special Edition was a striking vehicle, especially in its Black Onyx color. This model eradicated almost all chrome from the exterior, transforming the SUV into a sleek, dark presence on the road. However, it took less than a day for a layer of dust to make the Lexus look drab and old. Despite its modern touches like the signature spindle grille and triple-beam LED headlights, the GX's design felt dated, reminiscent of its first-generation predecessor from 2002. Inside, the cabin quality was impeccable, with smooth, refined materials and a quiet atmosphere, save for the faint roar of the V8 engine.

In contrast, the 2023 Acura RDX featured a sharp, angular style that was unique yet conventional enough to blend in. The front showcased Acura's signature grille, flanked by sleek wraparound headlights, giving it a sporty and aggressive look. The side profile was accentuated by a distinctive character line, while the rear was more conventional. Inside, the RDX's cockpit had a vertical layout with a center stack of controls flowing into the center console. The interior, though not as modern as some rivals, offered a familiar and user-friendly design, appealing to those averse to the latest tech-heavy cockpits.

Performance

2022 Lexus GX

6/10

2023 Acura RDX

6/10

The 2022 Lexus GX 460, with its 5,126-pound curb weight, was powered by a 4.6-liter V8 engine producing 301 horsepower and 329 pound-feet of torque at 3,500 rpm. This setup allowed the GX to tow up to 6,500 pounds and accelerate to 60 mph in 7.8 seconds. The six-speed automatic transmission paired with a full-time 4WD system provided a stable and secure driving experience, aided by the Kinetic Dynamics Suspension System (KDSS). However, the GX's shape and weight resulted in a high drag coefficient of 0.35 and an EPA fuel economy estimate of 16 mpg in combined driving. The Off-Road Package, available with the Luxury trim, added features like Multi-Terrain Select and Crawl Control for enhanced off-road capability.

The 2023 Acura RDX, on the other hand, was equipped with a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine delivering 272 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque. Paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission, the RDX could accelerate to 60 mph in 6.7 seconds. The available SH-AWD system provided excellent traction and handling, making the RDX feel sporty yet comfortable. The ride quality was smooth, with the suspension effectively absorbing road imperfections. The RDX's performance was well-rounded, offering a balance of power, handling, and comfort.

Form and function

2022 Lexus GX

2/10

2023 Acura RDX

7/10

The 2022 Lexus GX offered an elevated driving position with a 10-way power-adjustable seat and clear outward visibility. The interior featured comfortable seats and well-placed padding, though some switchgear felt outdated. The Black Line Special Edition included NuLuxe upholstery, black ash wood trim, and a black headliner. However, the rear seat access was tricky, and the third-row seat was cramped and eliminated cargo space. The GX's cargo capacity was limited, with 11.6 cubic feet behind the third row, 46.7 cubic feet with the third row folded, and 64.7 cubic feet with the second row down. The side-swinging tailgate further complicated loading.

The 2023 Acura RDX provided ample space in the front seats, with additional power adjustments in higher trims. The rear seats comfortably accommodated average-sized adults, and the panoramic sunroof enhanced the cabin's open feel. The RDX offered 31.1 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats, expandable to 79.8 cubic feet with the seats folded. A deep bin under the cargo floor added versatility. The front passengers had plenty of storage options, though the center stack's design took up unnecessary space.

Technology

2022 Lexus GX

4/10

2023 Acura RDX

4/10

The 2022 Lexus GX 460 featured a new 10.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a significant improvement over the previous setup. The system included Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Amazon Alexa, and navigation. However, the stereo controls were awkwardly placed below the off-roading controls, making them harder to use. The dual-screen view and excellent voice recognition technology were highlights, but the overall tech offering was limited compared to competitors.

The 2023 Acura RDX's infotainment system used a touchpad controller, which was challenging to use, especially while driving. The dashtop display was not a touchscreen, making the touchpad the primary control method. The system improved with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, allowing for easier operation. The RDX also came with a Wi-Fi hotspot and remote monitoring via the Acuralink app. The top A-Spec Advanced trim included a 16-speaker ELS audio system, delivering excellent sound quality.

Safety

2022 Lexus GX

4/10

2023 Acura RDX

7/10

The 2022 Lexus GX, despite its age, came with Lexus Safety System+, which included adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, and automatic high-beam headlights. Additional features included blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and Safety Connect services. However, the GX lacked some modern safety technologies found in competitors, such as lane-keeping assist and semi-autonomous driving systems.

The 2023 Acura RDX received top safety ratings from both NHTSA and IIHS. Standard safety features included forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, and lane-keep assist. The Technology package added parking sensors, while the Advance package included a surround-view camera system and a head-up display. The RDX's safety systems performed well, with only occasional false warnings.
