2022 Genesis GV70 Reviews Summary

Hyundai’s Genesis luxury brand has only been around for about five years, but it’s progressed so much in that time it seems like much longer than that. Genesis has quickly gone from selling two repurposed Hyundai sedans to fielding a full lineup of luxury cars and creating a distinct identity through bold design.

The 2022 Genesis GV70 is the brand’s latest effort. Not to be confused with the Genesis G70 sedan, the GV70 is a crossover SUV positioned below the recently-launched Genesis GV80 in size and price, meaning it competes with the Acura RDX, Audi Q5, BMW X3, Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class, Volvo XC60, and numerous other small luxury SUVs. As with the larger GV80 and the Genesis sedans, the challenge for the GV70 will be convincing new-car buyers to abandon familiar nameplates for something they might not have heard of.

The GV70 launches with a 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine and optional 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged V6. The four-cylinder is available with Standard, Select, Advanced, and Sport Prestige trim levels, while the V6 engine is available with all trim levels except the Select. Our test car was a GV70 3.5T, a range-topping AWD Sport Prestige model with the 3.5-liter V6.

2022 Toyota Sienna Reviews Summary

The 2022 Toyota Sienna hybrid minivan rolls into the second model year following a redesign for 2021. Last year’s successful makeover with a standard hybrid powertrain returns unchanged, but a new Woodland trim level is available to attract adventurous families (or those who want to look that way).

2022 Genesis GV70

9/10

2022 Toyota Sienna

9/10

The 2022 Genesis GV70 boasted a distinctive design that set it apart from its siblings in the Genesis lineup. It featured the brand's signature quad LED strips for headlights and taillights, along with a prominent shield-shaped grille. The GV70's sloping roofline and ribbed detailing added a touch of athleticism to its profile, blending the ruggedness of an SUV with sleek, car-like elements. The Sport Prestige model further enhanced its character with unique styling features, including a model-specific front fascia, 21-inch wheels with a web pattern, and dark chrome trim. Inside, the GV70's interior was inspired by the cross-section of an airplane's wing, with an elliptical theme that extended to the door handles and armrests. The design was minimalistic, with a perched touchscreen and hidden air vents, while a rotary gear selector and infotainment controller added a touch of sophistication. The interior offered a range of color options and luxurious materials, with Nappa leather upholstery and suede seat inserts in the Sport Prestige model.

In contrast, the 2022 Toyota Sienna embraced its minivan identity while incorporating SUV-like styling elements. Toyota's commitment to the minivan segment was evident in the Sienna's design, which featured a macho front end and cleverly engineered door hinges that concealed the slider channel. The rear doors had integrated styling details, and the overall profile exuded an assertive stance. The Sienna's interior was designed to avoid the typical minivan feel, with an uncluttered front cabin and ample storage options throughout. The second and third rows offered comfortable seating, with available captain's chairs and a spacious three-across bench in the third row. The third-row bench easily folded into the floor, providing flexibility for cargo and passenger needs. The Sienna's power-operated sliding doors and tailgate, with foot-motion triggers, added convenience for busy families.

Performance

2022 Genesis GV70

7/10

2022 Toyota Sienna

8/10

The 2022 Genesis GV70 offered two engine options: a base 2.5-liter turbo-four engine producing 300 horsepower and 311 pound-feet of torque, and a more powerful 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6 generating 375 horsepower and 391 lb-ft of torque. Both engines were paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and came standard with all-wheel drive (AWD). The GV70's sporty aspirations were evident with features like a rear electronic limited-slip differential and launch control, although these features seemed more suited to a sporty coupe than a compact SUV. The Sport+ drive mode added aggression to the driving experience, but the GV70's chassis and steering lacked the sharpness of some competitors. While the GV70 excelled in highway cruising, its firm ride and lack of solidity detracted from its luxury appeal.

In contrast, the 2022 Toyota Sienna featured a hybrid powertrain, combining a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with two electric motors to produce 243 horsepower. Front-wheel drive (FWD) was standard, with AWD available on all trim levels. The Sienna's AWD system utilized a separate electric motor for the rear wheels, simplifying the mechanical setup. The electronically controlled continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) contributed to smooth power delivery and fuel efficiency. The Sienna's handling was surprisingly good for a minivan, thanks to its Toyota Next Generation Architecture (TNGA) platform. The Sienna Hybrid's standout feature was its impressive fuel economy, with EPA ratings of 36 mpg city/highway/combined for FWD models and 35 mpg for AWD models. The Sienna's battery pack was cleverly tucked under the front seats, and it came with a 10-year/150,000-mile warranty.

Form and function

2022 Genesis GV70

8/10

2022 Toyota Sienna

9/10

The 2022 Genesis GV70 offered mid-pack interior space for its segment. Despite its car-like roofline, it provided adequate headroom in both the front and back seats, comparable to competitors like the Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class and BMW X3. Legroom was sufficient, and rear-seat visibility was good due to thin rear pillars. Cargo space measured 28.9 cubic feet with the rear seats in place and 56.9 cubic feet with them folded, placing the GV70 in the middle range compared to its competitors. The interior design, while daring, compromised storage space with a slim center console. The front seats in the Sport Prestige model were heavily bolstered, offering comfort for spirited driving but potentially feeling confining for some drivers. The driver's seat and front passenger's also featured heating/ventilation, massage, and posture-assist functions, which seemed designed on a scale of difficulty.

The 2022 Toyota Sienna was designed as a family workhorse with impressive cargo capacity. It could accommodate a full 4x8 sheet of plywood with the tailgate closed, and the sliding second row added flexibility for loading luggage and freight. Cargo measurements were 33.5 cubic feet behind the third row, 75.2 cubic feet behind the second row, and 101 cubic feet with both rows folded. The Sienna's interior was designed to avoid the typical minivan feel, with an uncluttered front cabin and ample storage options throughout. The second and third rows offered comfortable seating, with available captain's chairs and a spacious three-across bench in the third row. The power-operated sliding doors and tailgate, with foot-motion triggers, added convenience for busy families.

Technology

2022 Genesis GV70

9/10

2022 Toyota Sienna

The 2022 Genesis GV70 was equipped with a host of advanced technology features that set it apart from many competitors. The standard infotainment system included a 14.5-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, featuring a tile-based layout and crisp typefaces and graphics. The infotainment system's glass rotary controller was a high-quality item that also proved functional, thanks to integrated pinch-to-zoom functionality. The GV70 also got the digital-key feature already available in some models from Genesis parent Hyundai, as well as most Lincoln SUVs, letting drivers use a smartphone in place of a key fob. Alternatively, you could use the standard fingerprint scanner to start the car, as well as call up a cloud-based driver profile. Genesis also offered a higher-tech version of the rear-seat monitors offered by many other automakers as a way to prevent drivers from leaving children or pets unattended. This version used radar that was sensitive enough to detect a baby's breathing, according to Genesis. Similarly, while most competitors offered 360-degree camera systems, Genesis let you activate the cameras remotely (through an app) to see what's around the vehicle before getting in. The latter feature was part of Genesis Connected Services, which was included free for three years and also bundled driver profiles, last-mile guidance navigation, and a valet mode.

The 2022 Toyota Sienna was equipped with a wide array of standard and available technology features. A 9-inch touchscreen was standard in all grades, with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Amazon Alexa compatibility, as well as SiriusXM with a three-month trial, one USB media port, and six USB charging ports throughout the cabin. However, the Sienna lacked wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capability, which was a notable oversight. The Sienna came with a one-year trial of Safety Connect and Remote Connect telematics services (on XLE and above models), a 10-year trial of Service Connect, and a three-month trial of AT&T WiFi Connect with up to 2 gigabytes of data included. Bluetooth hands-free and audio streaming were standard on all trim levels, while Qi wireless phone charging was standard on Limited and Platinum models and available on all others. Higher trim levels also offered a 12-speaker JBL audio system and a rear-seat entertainment system with an 11.6-inch 1080p display, remote, and wireless headphones. A color multi-information display in the instrument panel center displayed essential information, and Platinum trim models featured a 10-inch color head-up display for added convenience. Limited and Platinum models could upgrade to a digital rearview mirror, providing a clear view of the road behind even when the vehicle was fully loaded.

Safety

2022 Genesis GV70

7/10

2022 Toyota Sienna

9/10

The 2022 Genesis GV70 came equipped with a comprehensive suite of standard safety features, including lane-keep assist, forward-collision warning, blind-spot and forward collision-avoidance assist, rear cross-traffic alert, a driver-attention monitor, and Highway Driving Assist, which added automated lane centering to adaptive cruise control. The GV70 also had eight standard airbags, including a front-center airbag that inflated between the front seats. Optional driver-assist features included a Highway Driving Assist 2 system with lane-change functionality, blind-spot monitoring, and navigation-based adaptive cruise control with auto-curve slowdown. While crash-test ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) were not available for the GV70, the Highway Driving Assist system was praised for its smooth control inputs, although its lane-centering function had limitations on certain curves.

The 2022 Toyota Sienna received high safety ratings, earning a Top Safety Pick+ rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and a five-star rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) following its crash-testing. The Sienna came standard with the Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 suite of driver aids, which included adaptive cruise control, Lane Tracing Assist lane centering, forward collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, automatic high beams, and traffic sign recognition. Additionally, the Sienna featured Toyota's Star Safety System, which included stability control, traction control, anti-lock brakes, and electronic brake-force distribution. The Sienna was equipped with 10 airbags and several LATCH (Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children) child-seat connectors, with five locations for eight-passenger vans and four locations for seven-passenger models. A rear-seat reminder system was also standard, which was particularly important for families with young children. Tire-pressure monitoring and an inflator kit were standard on all models, with an optional spare tire available for added safety and convenience.
