2021 BMW X7 Reviews Summary

In some parts of America, large luxury three-row SUVs are commonplace, but the list of available models is relatively short. Until recently, one famous German automaker was missing from the menu, but when the X7 arrived for the 2019 model year as a new BMW, that changed.

Based on the BMW X5 and built in the same South Carolina factory, the 2021 BMW X7 sees a few changes for 2021. The standard xDrive40i model gains a 48-volt mild-hybrid powertrain offering an incremental increase in efficiency, BMW cancels the xDrive50i version, and the performance-tuned Alpina XB7 debuts.

BMW also modifies the SUV’s standard, optional, and package equipment this year, restricting many of the X7’s most decadent features to the Alpina XB7.

2021 Lexus RX Reviews Summary

The body and mechanics of the midsize Lexus RX are mostly unchanged for the 2021 model year. It remains a formidable luxury SUV with comfortable accommodations and plenty of creature comforts. Lexus’ tradition of reliability extends to the RX as well. There are a few tech upgrades worth noting for 2021, including new standard safety systems.

2021 BMW X7

8/10

2021 Lexus RX

8/10

The 2021 BMW X7 was a standout in the luxury SUV segment, often seen navigating the bustling streets of Los Angeles. It was known for its superior interior quality, surpassing that of the Cadillac Escalade, and boasted more prestige than the Infiniti QX80 or Lincoln Navigator. The X7 also offered advanced technological features that outshone the Lexus LX 570, and its visual presence was more commanding than the Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class. Despite its impressive attributes, the X7's appeal was subjective, as personal preference played a significant role in this segment.

The 2021 Lexus RX embodied the modern design aesthetic of Lexus, featuring a large grille, angular headlamps, and a floating roof. It was available in five variants, including the RX, RX F Sport, RXL, RX Hybrid, and RXL Hybrid, each catering to different preferences. The RX's design updates from 2020, such as elongated headlights and a refined front end, remained for 2021. Standard features included 18-inch aluminum wheels and LED lighting, with options for 20-inch wheels and triple-beam LED headlights. The interior was well-appointed, offering comfort and luxury, though the center console design was considered dated.

2021 Lexus RX

7/10

The 2021 BMW X7 xDrive40i was powered by a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine, delivering 335 horsepower and 331 lb-ft of torque. It featured an eight-speed sport automatic transmission and BMW's xDrive AWD system. The eBoost mild-hybrid technology, with a 48-volt starter/generator and battery, aimed to enhance fuel efficiency and responsiveness. However, the X7's fuel economy ratings were slightly lower than the previous year, with 19 mpg in the city, 24 mpg on the highway, and 21 mpg combined. The X7 accelerated from 0 to 60 mph in 5.8 seconds, offering a smooth and powerful driving experience, though its handling was sometimes hindered by its weight and body motions.

The 2021 Lexus RX, RXL, and RX F-Sport were equipped with a 3.5-liter V6 engine, producing 295 horsepower and 267 lb-ft of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. The RX Hybrid models combined a V6 engine with three electric motors, generating 308 horsepower and utilizing an e-CVT. The RX 350 FWD achieved 20 mpg in the city, 27 mpg on the highway, and 23 mpg combined. The RX Hybrid offered better fuel efficiency, with up to 31 mpg in the city. The RX's handling was improved with suspension tuning, and the F Sport Handling package added adaptive suspension and sportier features. The RX accelerated from 0 to 60 mph in 7.7 to 7.9 seconds, depending on the drivetrain.

Form and function

2021 Lexus RX

The 2021 BMW X7 offered a luxurious interior with features like heated and ventilated seats, premium leather upholstery, and a five-zone climate control system. The front seats provided exceptional comfort, and the second-row captain's chairs were equally accommodating. The third-row seats were surprisingly spacious for adults, though accessing them required some maneuvering of the power seats. The X7's cargo space was limited, with 48.6 cubic feet behind the second row and 90.4 cubic feet with all seats folded.

The 2021 Lexus RX was a functional SUV, seating five in the two-row models and up to seven in the three-row RXL versions. The front and second-row seats offered ample space, while the third row was tight for adults. The RX's cargo capacity was modest, with 18.4 cubic feet behind the second row and 56.3 cubic feet with seats folded. The three-row RX provided 7.5 cubic feet behind the third row and 58.5 cubic feet with all seats folded. A power liftgate was standard, with a hands-free option available.

Technology

The 2021 BMW X7 featured the Live Cockpit Professional digital instrumentation and iDrive 7.0 infotainment system, both with 12.3-inch displays. The system included Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, SiriusXM 360L, and Connected Package Pro with real-time data and WiFi hotspot access. Wireless charging and a natural voice-recognition system were also available. The iDrive system was user-friendly, though it could be distracting while driving. A head-up display was included, though visibility was limited with polarized sunglasses.

The 2021 Lexus RX came standard with dual-zone climate control, an 8-inch infotainment touchscreen, and connectivity features like Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Amazon Alexa. Upgrades included a 12.3-inch touchscreen, wireless charging, and a premium audio system. The infotainment system was functional but not the most intuitive, with a Remote Touch controller that took up console space. The RX lacked wireless smartphone integration, which might be a drawback for some buyers.

Safety

The 2021 BMW X7 came with standard safety technologies, with additional features available in the Driving Assistance Professional Package and Parking Assistance Package. The package included advanced driving assistance systems like evasive-steering assist and traffic-jam assist, which generally worked well but had occasional issues with lane maintenance. The Parking Assistance Package added semi-automated parking and a surround-view camera.

The 2021 Lexus RX received a Top Safety Pick designation from the IIHS, with Good marks in crashworthiness tests. The NHTSA rated the RX models with four out of five stars overall. Standard safety features included a rearview camera, 10 airbags, and Lexus Safety System+ 2.0, which offered a suite of driver-assist technologies. While comprehensive, the RX's safety features lacked the advanced hands-off systems found in some competitors.
