2021 Toyota Highlander Hybrid Reviews Summary

There comes a time in everyone’s life when practicality rules. Usually, it arrives shortly before or after having children. In many ways, the 2021 Toyota Highlander is purpose-built to provide that practicality—especially in hybrid form. Redesigned for the 2020 model year, the 2021 Highlander adds a sporty XSE trim level (V6 models only), improved headlights on lower trim levels, and an upgraded Toyota Safety Sense 2.5+ collection of safety features. These changes can only make the Highlander a more appealing choice in a highly competitive segment.

2022 Lexus RX Reviews Summary

Likely on the tail end of this fourth generation, the Lexus RX was last redesigned in 2015 with a mild mid-cycle refresh for the 2020 model year. But to consider the RX long in the tooth would be a mistake. Not only is it the automaker’s best-selling model, but the RX also enjoyed its best-ever sales year in 2021. A carryover for 2022, the Lexus RX sees minimal changes which include new colors and a standalone fog lamps option.

Look and feel

2021 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

7/10

2022 Lexus RX

7/10

The 2021 Toyota Highlander Hybrid initially presented a bold and distinctive design that required some getting used to. Its blunt and bulbous nose, coupled with black windshield pillars, gave it an aggressive look, while the swollen haunches attempted to balance the styling. However, over time, the design became more familiar and less striking. The interior offered a two-tone look with soft leather in higher trims, but the dashboard's asymmetrical design and glossy black detailing could suffer from reflections. The controls were well laid out, though the mix of illumination colors at night made the gauges appear busy.

In contrast, the 2022 Lexus RX maintained a modern and sporty design, with sharp character lines and angular features that stopped just short of being excessive. The RX's aggressive styling stood out among its competitors, and the F Sport trim added a touch of athleticism with 20-inch wheels and unique front fascia. Inside, the RX offered a luxurious cabin with various color combinations and high-quality materials. However, the center stack felt dated, and the NuLuxe seats in the F Sport trim were less comfortable than expected. Despite these drawbacks, the RX provided a serene and quiet ride, making it a pleasant companion for long drives.

Performance

2021 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

4/10

2022 Lexus RX

7/10

The 2021 Toyota Highlander Hybrid transitioned from a V6 engine to a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine, resulting in improved fuel efficiency with an EPA rating of 36 mpg combined. However, this came at the cost of reduced power, with a total output of 243 hp. The hybrid system used an "E-CVT" to mimic an automatic transmission, and while it offered adequate power for climbing hills and reaching freeway speeds, the engine sounded strained during hard acceleration. The steering was lifeless, and the ride was soft, leading to unwanted body movement. Despite these shortcomings, the Highlander Hybrid excelled in fuel economy and provided a comfortable ride on smooth roads.

The 2022 Lexus RX 350 featured a 3.5-liter V6 engine producing 295 hp, while the hybrid RX 450h combined the V6 with electric motors for a total of 308 hp. Both models used an eight-speed automatic transmission, with AWD available for the RX 350 and standard on the hybrid. Despite the F Sport designation, the RX lacked sporty performance, with a subdued engine note and unimpressive acceleration. The F Sport Handling package added adaptive suspension and other features, but the differences between drive modes were minimal. The RX excelled in comfort and cabin quietness, absorbing rough patches and providing a serene driving experience. The RX 450h offered better fuel efficiency, with an EPA rating of 30 mpg combined.

Form and function

2021 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

2022 Lexus RX

The 2021 Toyota Highlander Hybrid Limited offered roomy and supportive accommodations for the driver and front passenger, with power-adjustable seats and leather upholstery. The second-row bench seat increased seating capacity to eight, but the narrow cabin made it uncomfortable for three adults. The third-row seat was cramped and difficult to access. Cargo space was generous, with 48.4 cubic feet available with the third row folded and a maximum capacity of 84.3 cubic feet. However, the storage areas were less accommodating than the previous generation, and the wireless charger blocked access to the center storage bin.

The 2022 Lexus RX provided 99.8 cubic feet of passenger volume in the standard two-row model, comfortably seating four adults. The three-row L models offered limited space, with only 7.45 cubic feet of cargo space behind the third row. With both back rows down, the RX offered up to 58.48 cubic feet of cargo capacity. The power liftgate provided a wide opening, but the high load-in height made loading difficult. The RX featured thoughtful interior features, such as a smartphone slot and adjustable-height cup holder, enhancing convenience.

Technology

2022 Lexus RX

The 2021 Toyota Highlander Hybrid came equipped with a comprehensive infotainment system, including Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Amazon Alexa connectivity. The test vehicle featured a 12.3-inch touchscreen display with an 11-speaker JBL audio system and navigation. The infotainment system was user-friendly, with large knobs and shortcut buttons for easy access. However, the JBL sound system's performance varied depending on the music genre. Additional features included Driver Easy Speak and a video rearview mirror for improved visibility.

The 2022 Lexus RX offered an 8-inch touchscreen display as standard, with a 12.3-inch version available. Despite being moved closer to the driver, the touchscreen's positioning was ergonomically unfriendly, with a lip obstructing access to icons. The touchpad was hypersensitive and difficult to use, leading to frustration. However, the RX included a range of tech features, such as six USB ports, wireless charging, and premium audio systems. The Lexus App provided additional connectivity options, including remote engine start and vehicle settings.

Safety

2022 Lexus RX

8/10

The 2021 Toyota Highlander Hybrid featured Toyota Safety Sense 2.5+, which included advanced driver-assist technologies like intersection support and emergency steering assistance. Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert were available on higher trims. The adaptive cruise control and lane-centering assistance systems were effective but occasionally felt uneven. The Highlander received a five-star overall rating from the NHTSA and was expected to achieve a "Top Safety Pick+" rating from the IIHS.

The 2022 Lexus RX came with Lexus Safety System 2.0+, offering adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning, and a pre-collision system. Additional safety features included blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert. The RX was named a Top Safety Pick by the IIHS when equipped with optional triple-beam LED headlights. However, it missed the "plus" designation due to headlight ratings. The NHTSA awarded the RX four stars overall, with five stars in side crash tests.
