2023 Lexus RX Reviews Summary

If you scrub electric-only Teslas from the list, the Lexus RX is the best-selling luxury vehicle in America. The model first went on sale about 25 years ago, and it has cultivated a loyal following with people who aspire to own a reliable, refined, safe, and stylish luxury crossover SUV. To say the redesigned 2023 Lexus RX represents the mother of all risk/reward scenarios is an understatement. But based on a day driving numerous versions of the new 2023 RX, we’d say Lexus has struck the right balance with its latest two-row midsize SUV.

2024 Genesis GV80 Reviews Summary

Genesis introduced the GV80 in 2021, and the crossover SUV is getting a minor refresh in 2025. Still, the 2024 GV80 remains a good choice unless you want to wait for the fancier styling, more high-tech interior, or new supercharged GV80 Coupe coming next year. Otherwise, today’s GV80 is pretty much the same as tomorrow’s GV80, and in some respects, it is the more elegant and traditional choice.

Verdict: Based on our evaluation of the 2024 Genesis GV80, seat comfort is not what it should be. Also, to use Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, you need a USB cable. This Genesis is thirsty, too. But otherwise, we have few complaints about this stylish, safe, and mostly rewarding midsize luxury SUV.

Look and feel

2023 Lexus RX

7/10

2024 Genesis GV80

9/10

The 2023 Lexus RX presented a refined exterior with a shorter height, broader width, and longer wheelbase, maintaining the same overall length as its predecessor. Despite offering more cargo space than the 2022 model, it appeared smaller due to reduced rear overhang and softer design lines. The signature spindle-style grille was seamlessly integrated, flowing into an elevated hood and upswept body sides reminiscent of the Lexus IS sedan. The rear featured a light-blade taillight design and sporty bumper, ensuring the RX was recognizable yet fresh compared to its predecessor. Inside, the RX boasted a modern interior with fewer buttons, digital instrumentation, and a choice of touchscreen displays. Quality materials like NuLuxe artificial leather and real wood trims elevated the cabin's luxury feel.

In contrast, the 2024 Genesis GV80 offered a more opulent experience, especially in the Prestige Signature trim. The exterior, available in exclusive colors like Mauna Red, was complemented by dark chrome trim and 22-inch wheels. Inside, the GV80's Ultramarine Blue over Dune interior exuded luxury with diamond-stitched Nappa leather, matte-finish wood trim, and ambient lighting. The 3D digital instrument cluster and wide touchscreen display underscored its flagship status. However, the Prestige Signature's exterior design was less appealing than the Prestige model, and the wheel design was criticized for being too subtle. Despite this, the GV80's interior was unmistakably luxurious, though the Signature trim's limited seating capacity was a drawback.

Performance

2023 Lexus RX

7/10

2024 Genesis GV80

8/10

The 2023 Lexus RX 350 featured a turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine producing 275 horsepower and 317 pound-feet of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. This engine offered better torque and fuel economy than the previous V6, though it lacked the same smoothness. During testing, the RX 350 Luxury trim displayed occasional torque steer and excess body motion, while the F Sport Handling trim felt more secure with its adaptive suspension. The RX 350 AWD accelerated to 60 mph in 7.2 seconds, with fuel economy expectations of 24 mpg, though real-world results were slightly lower.

The 2024 Genesis GV80 offered two engine options: a 2.5T turbocharged four-cylinder with 300 horsepower and a 3.5T twin-turbo V6 with 375 horsepower. The 3.5T provided a more satisfying performance but was less fuel-efficient, with observed fuel economy of 17.2 mpg. Both engines were paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and standard all-wheel drive. The GV80's driving experience was rewarding, with swift acceleration and commendable grip from its all-season tires. The adaptive damping suspension and upgraded brakes enhanced its athleticism, though the steering was unremarkable. The GV80's two-spoke steering wheel design was noted for its comfort during long drives.

Form and function

2023 Lexus RX

7/10

2024 Genesis GV80

5/10

The 2023 Lexus RX 350 offered comfortable seating, with the F Sport Handling's sport seat bolsters providing extra support. The RX 350 Luxury featured premium leather upholstery, heated and ventilated front seats, and a sophisticated interior design. The back seat was roomy, though taller passengers might find headroom tight. Cargo space was improved, with 29.6 cubic feet behind the second row and 46.2 cubic feet with the seats folded.

The 2024 Genesis GV80's interior varied by trim, with the Prestige Signature offering luxurious features like heated and ventilated captain's chairs and a panoramic glass roof. However, the seats were criticized for being uncomfortable on long trips. The GV80's cargo space was generous, with 34.9 cubic feet behind the second row and 84 cubic feet with the seats folded. The Prestige Signature's rear console height required caution when loading cargo.

Technology

2023 Lexus RX

2024 Genesis GV80

8/10

The 2023 Lexus RX introduced the new Lexus Interface infotainment system with a choice of touchscreen displays. It included wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and various connected services. The Intelligent Assistant voice recognition was generally accurate, though it occasionally provided unrelated results. The system allowed user profiles and music streaming, though it lacked the ability to view multiple data panels simultaneously. The Mark Levinson premium sound system was praised for its quality, and additional features included a digital rearview mirror and head-up display.

The 2024 Genesis GV80 featured a 14.5-inch touchscreen infotainment display, though its distance from the driver encouraged use of the control dial. The system included navigation, satellite radio, and wired smartphone integration. A Wi-Fi hotspot was newly available, and wireless charging was standard. The voice-recognition system was user-friendly, and the digital key system allowed smartphone access. The Prestige trims included a head-up display, which was particularly useful for blind-spot warnings.

Safety

2023 Lexus RX

2024 Genesis GV80

8/10

The 2023 Lexus RX came equipped with Lexus Safety System+ 3.0, offering a comprehensive suite of advanced driving assistance systems. New features included motorcycle detection, evasive steering assistance, and intersection turn assistance. Proactive Driving Assist and Traffic Jam Assist were notable additions, though the latter required driver attention. Advanced Park Assist was available but slow in congested areas. The system's reliance on the head-up display posed challenges for drivers wearing polarized sunglasses.

The 2024 Genesis GV80 offered a range of advanced safety features, including a Blind-Spot View Monitor and Remote Smart Parking Assist. Highway Driving Assist combined adaptive cruise control with lane-centering and lane-change assist, though it was less effective in heavy traffic. The Blind-Spot View Monitor provided a video feed in the digital instrument panel, enhancing safety during lane changes. The GV80 received top safety ratings from both the IIHS and NHTSA, ensuring peace of mind for drivers.
