Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2020 Toyota Highlander 4.6 / 5 stars.

The 2020 Toyota Highlander features a spacious interior, advanced safety features, and a smooth ride, making it a popular choice for families.
Why it stands out
The 2020 Toyota Highlander distinguishes itself in the crowded midsize SUV market with its focus on passenger comfort and advanced safety features. Redesigned for 2020, it offers a tranquil driving experience, akin to that of a luxury vehicle, thanks to its silent operation and soft ride. The Highlander's interior is well-crafted, featuring high-quality materials and a user-friendly infotainment system, although some may find the technology a bit outdated compared to competitors. With a powerful 3.5-liter V6 engine, it delivers brisk acceleration while maintaining good fuel efficiency, rated at 21 mpg city and 29 mpg highway for the front-wheel-drive model. While it may not be the most exciting SUV to drive, its spaciousness, comfort, and safety make it an appealing option for families seeking reliability and ease of use.

It’s well-equipped, comfortable, and family-friendly SUV with strong safety tech, a smooth ride, and premium touches (thanks to the platinum trim) like a panoramic moonroof, leather seating, and 12” touchscreen. Its V6 offers solid power and decent fuel efficiency for a 3-row SUV, and overall it feels modern, quiet, and refined. It’s a great value if you want a reliable, upscale daily driver! The main thing it’s missing is more usable third-row and cargo space. The 3rd row is tight for adults and cargo behind it is limited. Otherwise, it’s a strong all-around pick and fits exactly what I was looking for. I would compare this to the Kia Telluride, Hyundai Palisade, Honda Pilot, and the Ford Explorer.

The ride was smooth, the Highlander is quick and very quiet. I loved many of the features it had, like the posted speed limit on the instrument cluster. What really disappointed me was the passenger seat comfort. The seat bottom only adjusts fron-to-rear, not up or down so I wasn’t as comfortable in it as I was the Hyundai Palisade or the Kia Telluride. It’s still a really good vehicle.

Is the 2020 Toyota Highlander a good car?
Yes — the 2020 Toyota Highlander earns a 4.6/5 user rating and a 7.67/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Form and function and Safety.
Owners consistently praise its smooth ride, spacious interior, and advanced safety features. The review summary also points to strong family appeal and a comfortable, easygoing driving experience.
The trade-offs are the front-seat comfort and interior materials, which some owners find less impressive than the rest of the cabin. Expert testing also notes poor handling and uninspired styling.
For you, that means the Highlander makes the most sense if you value comfort, space, and safety over driving excitement. It also fits well if you want a three-row SUV that feels upscale without moving into luxury-brand pricing. Good and great deals account for 33.1% of listings, so there is still room to shop selectively.
Is the 2020 Toyota Highlander reliable?
Owners rate it 4.6/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner summary points to a dependable, trouble-free feel, with many drivers highlighting the Highlander as a vehicle they can count on for family use. That same theme shows up in the expert assessment, which emphasizes the SUV’s calm, smooth, and predictable character over the long haul.
Toyota also includes two years of maintenance and roadside assistance, which helps reduce early ownership friction. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about mechanical drama and more about finding a well-kept example that has been maintained consistently.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Toyota Highlander?
At 71.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the listing price looks unusually attractive. Focus on condition details that matter in a family SUV: seat wear, cabin materials, electronics, and signs of uneven repair quality. If you are comparing multiple examples, the cleanest history and best-maintained interior should usually win.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: Every trim except the base L has projector-beam LED headlights and fog lights, while the higher trims add prettier LED running lamps. The Limited and Platinum also get 20-inch wheels, and the Platinum adds diamond-quilted seat backrests.
- Powertrain: You get a 3.5-liter V6 with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. It delivers brisk acceleration, smooth operation, and 295 horsepower with 263 pound-feet of torque, while the eight-speed automatic can feel lazy on kickdown.
- Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard and includes automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection and cyclist detection, lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, and automatic high beams. Blind-spot monitoring, parking sensors, and rear emergency braking are optional.
- Infotainment: The standard screen is 8 inches, and a 12.3-inch touchscreen is optional on Limited and standard on Platinum. Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Amazon Alexa integration come standard, but the interface and camera resolution are dated.
- Fuel efficiency: The FWD model is rated at 21 mpg city, 29 mpg highway, and 24 mpg combined. AWD drops to 20 mpg city, 27 mpg highway, and 23 mpg combined.
Which 2020 Toyota Highlander trim should I buy?
The 2020 Toyota Highlander is offered in 5 trim levels: L, LE, XLE, Limited, Platinum.
Here's the short version:
- Base trim: The L is the entry point, and it misses the projector-beam LED headlights, fog lights, and the more upscale lighting and wheel upgrades found higher up.
- Sweet-spot trim: The XLE is the best value in the low $40,000 range, giving you the strongest balance of features and price.
- Premium/top trim: The Limited and Platinum bring the most upscale feel, including the larger touchscreen on the Platinum, the 10-inch head-up display, and the richest cabin presentation.
- Off-road trim: None of the trims is a true off-road choice for typical daily drivers, and the available off-road modes are not a reason to buy this SUV for trail use.
Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard across the lineup, so you do not need to move up a trim just to get the core driver-assistance suite.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Toyota Highlander?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop carefully without expecting a deep bargain on every listing.
- Deal availability: 33.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 3,176 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 5.62% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 71.7% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $26,999.99, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 Toyota Highlander's resale value?
The current average of $28,019 sits slightly below last year's $29,688.
That price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favorable entry point today. For a future seller, it also means resale value may depend heavily on condition, mileage, and whether the vehicle has a clean history. Well-kept examples should hold up better than average because shoppers still place a premium on comfort, safety, and family-friendly packaging.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.6/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2020 Toyota Highlander safe?
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety awarded it a 2020 Top Safety Pick.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard and includes automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection and cyclist detection, lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, and automatic high beams. A driver's knee airbag and a special cushion airbag for the front passenger are also standard.
Blind-spot monitoring, parking sensors, and rear emergency braking are optional, so you should check whether a specific listing has those extras if they matter to you. The main caveat is that some useful safety equipment is not standard on every trim.
Should I buy a 2020 Toyota Highlander or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 33.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 71.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 5.62% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.6/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- Redesigned for 2020, it delivers a quieter ride and a more premium cabin feel.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $30,339, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $28,019 average.
- It adds XSE styling and updated standard safety technology.
The bottom line: You should lean toward the 2020 if you want the better value and are comfortable shopping carefully for condition and history. If you can stretch your budget and want the newer-year updates, the 2021 is the cleaner upgrade path.
