Chevy nova with high gears , how can I make it to where I can drive daily?

Asked by novagirl1994 Nov 16, 2017 at 10:49 PM about the 1974 Chevrolet Nova

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I was told “rear end is high end gear has 373
gears.”

I want to be able to drive it on the highway if I need
to.

Go with a 3.55 gearset and youll get the best of both worlds unless you want to spend the cash to get a GEAR VENDORS under/overdrive tailstock for the transmission, you won't be sorry if you do

Change out the gears to a lower numerical number like 3.08 if you want but 3.73 is really not that low.

Installing a 4 speed auto like a 700r4 can also help at lot.

Plenty of people run 3.73's for street and strip, just needs the right tranny and OD for highway. If you run a 350 with a big cam and OD with 3.73 rear it can really lug an engine though. Check with any of the numerous A, X, or F body forums out there on a good tranny-rear diff. gearing combo.
