2023 RAM 2500 Reviews Summary

The Ram Power Wagon is a beast off-road and looks like it chews up and spits out lesser 2500-series heavy-duty pickup trucks for fun, but it’s also a purpose-built tool that isn’t easy to live with on a daily basis. The Ford F-250 Tremor and GMC Sierra 2500HD AT4 may not match the Power Wagon for sheer adventuring capability, but they retain more towing and payload capacity than the decal-decorated Ram, which can tow no more than 10,590 pounds and carry no more than 1,630 pounds of payload. Enter the new 2023 Ram 2500 Rebel. Problem solved.

2023 Toyota Tundra Reviews Summary

For over twenty years, the Toyota Tundra provided the basics. A stout engine, a reliable platform, and the sort of performance and capability that truck buyers still seek today. But in the automotive industry, twenty years is a long time. Change is inevitable, but few vehicles see changes as dramatic as what the Toyota Tundra underwent between the 2021 and 2022 model years. As it turned over a new generation, the Tundra gathered a brand new look, a massively more modern powertrain, and a full technological makeover. For 2023, Toyota keeps things much the same, save for an extra SX appearance package for the popular SR5 trim level.

2023 RAM 2500

8/10

2023 Toyota Tundra

7/10

The 2023 RAM 2500 Rebel, with its updated yet familiar aesthetic, boasted a bold and robust charm similar to the Power Wagon but offered a more refined, streamlined appearance due to its aluminum sport hood and absence of certain graphics and equipment, like the Warn winch. Its 20-inch wheels and Rebel-specific blacked-out grille contributed to a magnetically aggressive stance that caught the eye whether it cruised down city streets or stood still in the wilderness.

On the other hand, the 2023 Toyota Tundra took a more maximalist approach to its design. From the massive chrome-grilled face, which Toyota humorously likened to a 'Sam Elliot mustache,' to the interconnected solid design of the headlights and tail lights, the Tundra projected a no-nonsense, utilitarian vibe. Its body lines were long and the sculpted design elements made sure the truck looked as tough as it was advertised to be.

Both trucks impressed with their individual takes on what strength and style should look like in a modern full-size pickup, yet they offered distinct choices for potential owners: the RAM's slightly more traditional, subtly sophisticated design versus the Tundra's imposing and rugged presence.

Performance

2023 RAM 2500

9/10

2023 Toyota Tundra

8/10

The RAM 2500 Rebel was a powerhouse, equipped as standard with a 6.4-liter V8 engine delivering 410 horsepower. For those preferring diesel, the option of a 6.7-liter Cummins turbodiesel engine upped the ante with 370 horsepower and a substantial 850 lb-ft of torque, although choosing this meant sacrificing the maximum towing capacity which stood impressively at 16,870 pounds with the V8. The Rebel’s performance was bolstered by its robust build and high-strength steel frame, making it not just capable but particularly adaptable to both challenging terrains and everyday roads.

The Toyota Tundra came with a 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6 as standard, pushing out a near-equivalent 389 horsepower but stepped up its game with the i-FORCE MAX hybrid engine option producing an astonishing 437 horsepower and 583 lb-ft torque. Though its maximum towing capacity was lower at 12,000 pounds, the Tundra's use of lighter materials and a new multi-link rear suspension contributed to a smoother, more controlled ride even on uneven terrains.

Between the two, the RAM 2500 Rebel stood out for its higher power and classic toughness while the Tundra impressed with its high-tech hybrid power and a more refined driving experience.

Form and function

2023 Toyota Tundra

8/10

Interior space and comfort were areas where both trucks excelled but offered different perks. The inside of the RAM 2500 Rebel was designed with luxury in mind, featuring quality leather, heated and ventilated seating, and ample room for all passengers. Its cargo space was versatile thanks to smart storage solutions like Ram Box locking bins and a range of bed configurations and steps for easier access.

The Tundra's cabin also impressed with its thoughtful design and ease of use. It featured big, comfortable seats and a well-organized dashboard that notably included large physical controls for essential functions. Storage was ample, with innovative features like a top-mounted sliding door for the center bin, enhancing convenience.

In terms of utility, both trucks provided excellent solutions that spoke to the needs of everyday users and professional haulers alike, but with the RAM edging slightly ahead with superior towing capacity.

Technology

The RAM 2500 touted a new 12-inch digital instrumentation panel and a full suite of cameras and trailering technologies, offering an advanced yet accessible set of tools for modern truck owners. The Uconnect 5 system supported a range of functionalities including Apple CarPlay and a 17-speaker Harman Kardon sound system.

The Toyota Tundra wasn’t left behind in technology, boasting an optional 14-inch touchscreen infotainment system that represented a massive improvement over its predecessors. Like the RAM, it supported Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, with additional features such as a wireless charging pad enhancing the high-tech feel.

Both vehicles showcased significant advancements in truck technology, making them equally compelling for tech enthusiasts.

Safety

7/10

The 2023 RAM 2500 Rebel came equipped with a comprehensive array of driving aids including adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and automatic emergency braking. Its safety systems, although advanced, did not have formal ratings from major agencies.

The Toyota Tundra, loaded with Toyota Safety Sense 2.5, offered a similar suite of safety features. Despite some criticisms concerning the inclusivity of certain aids across all trims, it had garnered accolades such as a Top Safety Pick+ from the IIHS for CrewMax models.

Both models provided robust safety features, leveraging technology to create safer driving environments.
