2022 RAM 1500 Reviews Summary

In 2021, the Ram pickup line overtook the Chevrolet Silverado as the second-best-selling truck in America. That’s the headline. The nuance is that sales figures include the previous-generation version, now sold as the Ram 1500 Classic, which remains in production four years after its should have died. Also, General Motors suffered significant production disruptions due to the ongoing chip shortage. Nevertheless, and especially in light of the redesigned Toyota Tundra arriving in the market, we thought it would be good to revisit the most popular of the Ram trucks, the 2022 Ram 1500.

2023 RAM 2500 Reviews Summary

The Ram Power Wagon is a beast off-road and looks like it chews up and spits out lesser 2500-series heavy-duty pickup trucks for fun, but it’s also a purpose-built tool that isn’t easy to live with on a daily basis. The Ford F-250 Tremor and GMC Sierra 2500HD AT4 may not match the Power Wagon for sheer adventuring capability, but they retain more towing and payload capacity than the decal-decorated Ram, which can tow no more than 10,590 pounds and carry no more than 1,630 pounds of payload. Enter the new 2023 Ram 2500 Rebel. Problem solved.

Look and feel

2023 RAM 2500

The 2022 RAM 1500 showcased a sophisticated blend of style and function, benefitting significantly from a contemporary yet understated design in a segment known for more boisterous aesthetics. Its various trims, including the high-performance TRX and lavish Limited model, catered to a broad audience, offering a wide range of customization options through numerous packages and special editions. Notably, the RAM 1500 Limited carried an ambience of luxury, emphasized by Indigo and Sea Salt leather upholstery, a suede headliner, and an intricate mix of materials and surfaces that belied its utilitarian roots. In contrast, the 2023 RAM 2500, particularly in its Rebel trim, depicted a more rugged approach without compromising on style. The Rebel adopted aesthetics akin to the RAM Power Wagon but added distinctive elements like 20-inch wheels and a cleaner side profile, exuding a contemporary, muscular appeal. The model included upscale touches in its cabin, featuring quality materials and contrast stitching which enhanced the overall feel, though issues with some controls tempered the premium experience slightly.

Performance-wise, the 2022 RAM 1500 offered a plethora of powertrains, including the impressive EcoDiesel V6 that delivered a commendable blend of efficiency and torque, suitable for hefty towing tasks up to 12,560 pounds. Its refined ride quality, thanks to unique suspension choices like the four-corner air suspension, provided a level of comfort and driving dynamics reminiscent of high-end SUVs, setting a high bar in ride smoothness and interior quietness. Meanwhile, the 2023 RAM 2500 Rebel's performance centered around robust capabilities, anchored by a standard 6.4-liter V8 or an optional, more powerful Cummins turbodiesel inline-six. While the diesel variant boasted higher torque and modest fuel efficiency improvements during highway travels, it couldn't match the V8's maximum towing prowess of 16,870 pounds. Additionally, the Rebel trim offered considerable off-road equipment, though it lacked some of the specialized gear found in the Power Wagon variant.
Form and function

Interior space in the 2022 RAM 1500 was optimized for comfort and practicality. The cabin featured heated and ventilated seats across both rows, a myriad of storage options, and a multifunctional tailgate that enhanced usability. The vehicle embraced luxury in utility, presenting an accommodating environment for passengers and cargo alike. On the other hand, the 2023 RAM 2500 provided a robust but less intuitive entry experience, requiring more physical effort to access due to its height and layout. While it also offered a luxuriously appointed cabin with high-quality Natura Plus leather and advanced comfort features, the usability of certain controls and the ingress challenge could detract from the overall user experience. Cargo solutions were comparable, with innovative features like the Ram Box enhancing the functional appeal of the RAM 2500.

Technological enhancements in the 2022 RAM 1500 were focused on connectivity and multimedia, led by the introduction of the Uconnect 5 system. This system offered robust features like a large 12-inch touchscreen, wireless integration with smartphones, and advanced audio systems. Its comprehensive technology suite supported both entertainment and practical needs, such as advanced trailering technology and safety features. The 2023 RAM 2500 also incorporated the updated Uconnect 5 across all trims, paired with a new 12-inch digital instrumentation panel. The system's capabilities extended to advanced trailering technologies and improved external camera views, aimed at enhancing both convenience and safety during intensive driving tasks.

Safety technologies in the 2022 RAM 1500 were extensively equipped, particularly in higher trims, with features such as adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and automatic emergency braking. This comprehensive approach earned it high safety ratings from leading organizations. In comparison, the 2023 RAM 2500 implemented a similar suite of advanced driver aids but lacked official crash-test ratings due to its heavy-duty status. Nonetheless, its substantial build and safety features likely contributed to a presumed high level of protection.
