The 2022 Lexus ES had a long-standing legacy, originating with its debut in 1990 alongside the renowned LS 400. Over seven generations, the ES had maintained its position in the Lexus lineup, despite a decline in sales since its peak year in 2007. The ES faced the unique challenge of appealing to both its loyal yet aging customer base and newer, younger buyers. Launching on the Global Architecture-K (GA-K) platform in 2018, the ES shared its underpinnings with models like the Lexus RX, Toyota Camry, and Toyota Avalon. The GA-K platform featured a front-engine, front-wheel-drive layout, with the option for all-wheel drive.

The exterior of the ES was elegant yet understated. It featured smooth, almost fastback-like lines, with a divisive spindle grille that drew mixed reactions. The car came standard with 17-inch wheels, while higher trims offered 18-inch or 19-inch wheels, with many finding the 18-inch wheels to be the most visually appealing. Inside, the dashboard had an asymmetrical design, giving the driver’s side a cockpit feel, though it could appear cluttered. The F Sport model showcased two-tone leather seats, adding a sporty feel that somewhat contrasted with the car's overall design. Additionally, an analog chronometer inset on the touchscreen housing aimed to evoke a sense of tradition but ended up cluttering the dashboard further.

In contrast, the 2023 Mazda MAZDA3 presented a daring approach to design, particularly in its hatchback form. The hatchback's futuristic and clean design was seen as one of the most forward-thinking on the market. The sedan variant, while handsome, adhered to more conventional proportions.

The simplicity and cohesion of the Mazda3's interior were notable. The infotainment system gracefully emerged from the dash, embodying organic design principles. The conventional shifter and easily accessible climate controls made the cabin intuitive and user-friendly. The front seating area boasted moderately sized storage compartments and logical ergonomics, although the lid of the center console could be somewhat frustrating.

The 2022 Lexus ES was available in three model variants, each with distinct powertrains. The ES 250 AWD featured a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. It generated 203 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque, achieving an EPA rating of 25 mpg city, 34 mpg highway, and 28 mpg combined. Lexus claimed it could accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 8.6 seconds, with a top speed of 131 mph.

The ES 350 was powered by a 3.5-liter V6 engine, exclusively front-wheel drive. It produced 307 horsepower and 267 pound-feet of torque, resulting in a 0-60 mph time of 6.6 seconds. Its EPA ratings were 22 mpg city, 32 mpg highway, and 26 mpg combined, with a slight reduction for the F Sport trim.

The hybrid ES 300h combined a 176-hp four-cylinder engine with a 39-hp electric motor, creating a net output of 215 horsepower. Its electronically controlled CVT sent power to the front wheels, enabling a 0-60 mph time of 8.1 seconds. The hybrid excelled in efficiency, with EPA ratings of 43 mpg city, 44 mpg highway, and 44 mpg combined.

The 2023 Mazda MAZDA3 offered a base 2.5-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine, producing 191 horsepower and 186 pound-feet of torque, with the option for all-wheel drive. A manual transmission was available for front-wheel-drive Premium models.

Our test vehicle came with the optional turbocharged 2.5-liter engine, delivering 227 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque on regular fuel, or 250 horsepower and 320 pound-feet with premium fuel. This engine, paired with standard all-wheel-drive, offered an engaging driving experience, with well-weighted steering and impressive handling. Sport mode enhanced the driving dynamics by adjusting the transmission and steering feedback. The performance shone once the vehicle reached second gear, utilizing the turbocharger effectively. Despite strong handling and brake feel, the off-the-line acceleration could be considered merely moderate.

Sedans like the 2022 Lexus ES were overshadowed by the SUV craze but remained relevant for various reasons. The ES offered a spacious 13.9 cubic feet of trunk space, maintained even in the hybrid variant. The pass-through behind the center armrest and the ability to fold the second-row seats flat provided additional practicality. With a lower center of gravity compared to the Lexus RX SUV, the ES boasted superior handling, fuel economy, and maneuverability, along with an aesthetically pleasing design.

The 2023 Mazda MAZDA3 sedan provided 13.1 cubic feet of cargo space, falling short against other compact sedans like the Honda Civic. The hatchback variant offered more at 20.1 cubic feet but was still outclassed by many small SUVs. The rear seating area posed a significant limitation, with minimal legroom and compromised headroom due to the sloping roofline, making the Mazda3 more suited for front-seat occupants.

The Mazda3's front seating area provided adequate storage, and its ergonomics were commendable. However, the center console lid required a specific sliding action to open, which could be bothersome. Overall, the interior storage was quite usable.

The 2022 Lexus ES featured an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, compatible with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Amazon Alexa. Standard features included a 10-speaker Pioneer sound system, a CD player, and SiriusXM radio. Higher trims upgraded to a 12.3-inch touchscreen and a 17-speaker Mark Levinson audio system. Despite advancements, the touchpad interface remained challenging to use. Additional tech included a 10-inch head-up display and a Panoramic View Monitor with auto braking.

Lexus Enform services offered connected benefits, from emergency alerts to maintenance reminders and remote functions. Users also received various free trial periods for these services.

Conversely, the 2023 Mazda MAZDA3's 8.8-inch display was not a touchscreen, operated instead by a center console dial. This interface presented significant usability issues, particularly with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. While the included technology ranged from two USB ports to HD radio and Bluetooth, the non-intuitive system proved to be a drawback. Upgrades like navigation, satellite radio, and a 12-speaker Bose system enhanced the tech offering. Although the Bose system impressed with its sound quality, navigating its interface remained cumbersome.

The 2022 Lexus ES excelled in safety ratings, earning the IIHS Top Safety Pick+ and a five-star NHTSA rating. Standard safety features included the Lexus Safety System+ 2.5, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and ten airbags. Safety Connect services added features like emergency roadside assistance, ensuring comprehensive protection for occupants.

The 2023 Mazda MAZDA3 also came well-equipped with safety features, such as forward automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, and lane-departure warning. Higher trims introduced blind-spot monitoring, traffic-sign recognition, and a 360-degree camera system. However, the thick C-pillar on the hatchback variant created a notable blind spot, detracting from overall safety. Additionally, the confusing infotainment system posed distraction risks while driving.
