2022 Kia Forte Reviews Summary

With inflation and gas prices delivering a one-two punch to American budgets, could compact cars like the 2022 Kia Forte make a comeback? The segment is full of good choices, and you can easily get one with all of the modern infotainment technology and safety features for under $30,000. Plus, today’s compact cars are the size of midsize sedans from a decade or two ago.

Good thing Kia has updated the 2022 Forte with sharper styling and new infotainment, driver assist, and collision avoidance systems. Just in case consumers decide their next ride needs to be thriftier and more affordable.

2022 Mazda MAZDA3 Reviews Summary

With the departure of the grossly underappreciated Mazda6 midsize sedan, Mazda has just two cars left in its lineup: the iconic MX-5 Miata and the compact 2022 Mazda Mazda3. Good thing for Mazda they’re both highly desirable. This year, a Mazda3 2.5 S Carbon Edition debuts with Polymetal Gray paint, black 18-inch alloy wheels, black mirror caps, and a 12-speaker Bose premium sound system with aluminum speaker grilles. The Mazda3 Turbo models have a standard wiper de-icer system, and a new Platinum Quartz Metallic paint color is available.

2022 Kia Forte

7/10

2022 Mazda MAZDA3

9/10

The 2022 Kia Forte offered a range of trim levels, including the FE, LXS, GT-Line, and GT, each catering to different preferences and budgets. The Forte GT, evaluated for this review, stood out with its Steel Gray paint, GT2 Package, and a price tag of $26,900, including destination charges. It featured a sporty design with red-accent detailing, a gloss black lip spoiler, and 18-inch wheels, making it the most visually appealing in the Forte lineup. Inside, the Forte GT boasted a sporty interior with traditional analog gauges, a flat-bottom steering wheel, and polished metal accents, providing a Germanic touch to its otherwise simple cabin.

The 2022 Mazda MAZDA3, available in sedan and hatchback body styles, maintained its artistic design with deeply sculpted flanks and a mature, serious appearance. The top-of-the-line 2.5 Turbo Premium Plus hatchback, priced at $35,810, featured Polymetal Gray Metallic paint and a refined interior with polished metallic finishes. The Mazda3's interior was driver-focused, offering a snug yet comfortable fit with excellent thigh and side bolster support. However, the back seat was less accommodating for taller passengers, and the hatchback's cargo space, while adequate, was limited in shape and size.

Performance

2022 Kia Forte

7/10

2022 Mazda MAZDA3

9/10

The 2022 Kia Forte's performance varied across its trims. The standard 2.0-liter engine delivered 147 horsepower and 132 lb-ft of torque, achieving up to 35 mpg in combined driving. The Forte GT, however, offered a more exhilarating experience with its turbocharged 1.6-liter engine producing 201 hp and 195 lb-ft of torque. It featured a sport-tuned suspension, larger wheels, and available Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tires, providing a blend of ride and handling. Despite its spirited performance, the Forte GT's brakes struggled on demanding descents, and its engine noise at highway speeds was noticeable. Fuel economy fell short of EPA estimates, averaging 25.8 mpg during testing.

The 2022 Mazda MAZDA3 offered a range of engine options, with the 2.5 Turbo model standing out for its power and performance. The turbocharged 2.5-liter engine produced up to 250 hp and 320 lb-ft of torque with premium fuel, delivering a smooth and gradual power build-up. The Mazda3 excelled in handling, with nimble steering, unyielding grip, and outstanding balance. However, its brakes showed signs of fade during demanding tests, and the ride introduced hints of float on uneven surfaces. Fuel economy was below expectations, averaging 23.1 mpg, but the driving experience remained enjoyable and engaging.

Form and function

2022 Kia Forte

9/10

2022 Mazda MAZDA3

6/10

The 2022 Kia Forte GT, especially with the GT2 package, offered a comfortable and well-equipped interior. It featured a 10-way power-adjustable driver's seat, heated and ventilated front seats, and a power sunroof. The rear seat provided ample room for a compact car, and the trunk boasted 15.3 cubic feet of cargo space, the largest in its segment. The Forte's interior was practical, with a height-adjustable front passenger seat and rear air conditioning vents, enhancing comfort for all occupants.

The 2022 Mazda MAZDA3's interior was designed with the driver in mind, offering a snug fit and excellent support. The front seats were comfortable, with available leather upholstery and heated options. However, the back seat was less accommodating for taller passengers, lacking rear air conditioning vents and USB ports. Storage space was adequate, with large door bins and a sizable center console. The hatchback offered 20.1 cubic feet of cargo space, expandable to 47.1 cubic feet with the rear seats folded.

Technology

2022 Kia Forte

7/10

2022 Mazda MAZDA3

5/10

The 2022 Kia Forte featured new Technology option packages, enhancing its infotainment and safety systems. The FE and LXS trims offered wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto with an 8-inch touchscreen, while the GT-Line and GT required a cable for these features with their 10.25-inch display. The Forte GT included wireless smartphone charging and an available Harman Kardon sound system. The infotainment system was user-friendly, though voice recognition capabilities were inconsistent, leading to reliance on smartphone integration for navigation and music streaming.

The 2022 Mazda MAZDA3's Mazda Connect infotainment system used an 8.8-inch display with center console controls. While Mazda's approach aimed to reduce distractions, the lack of a physical tuning function and a cumbersome voice recognition system were drawbacks. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration provided alternatives for navigation and music streaming. Mazda Connected Services offered remote access via a smartphone app, and higher trims featured a Bose sound system and an Active Driving Display for enhanced convenience and safety.

Safety

2022 Kia Forte

2022 Mazda MAZDA3

10/10

The 2022 Kia Forte came equipped with a comprehensive suite of safety features, including forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, and a driver monitoring system. Higher trims added blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and Safe Exit Warning. The Forte received high marks from the IIHS for crashworthiness, though NHTSA ratings highlighted concerns with rear passenger safety in side impacts, resulting in a four-star overall rating.

The 2022 Mazda MAZDA3 excelled in safety, offering adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, and lane-keeping assist as standard. Higher trims included blind-spot monitoring, adaptive headlights, and Traffic Jam Assist. The Mazda3 received top ratings from both the NHTSA and IIHS, earning a five-star overall rating and a Top Safety Pick+ designation, making it one of the safest compact cars available.
