2022 GMC Sierra 2500HD Reviews Summary

When discussing heavy-duty pickups, it's easy to fixate on maximum towing and hauling capacities as the only things that matter. After all, the primary purpose of heavy-duty trucks is to carry and pull the heaviest loads possible. But with more consumers using these big trucks for work and play, there are other things to consider, like off-road ability, design, infotainment, trailering technology, and safety. That's a good thing for the GMC Sierra 2500HD.

2022 Honda Ridgeline Reviews Summary

Honda isn’t known for pickup trucks, but that means it brings a different perspective to the genre. The 2022 Honda Ridgeline is like no other pickup on the market.

The Ridgeline isn’t just being different for the sake of being different, either. It uses the same unibody construction that gives crossover SUVs greater refinement than traditional models to offer increased comfort and better on-road handling than most pickups.

Since the Ridgeline’s debut, the Hyundai Santa Cruz and Ford Maverick have applied the unibody concept to smaller compact pickups, creating a new niche, but the Honda is a larger vehicle that competes with existing midsize pickups like the Ford Ranger, Jeep Gladiator, Nissan Frontier, Toyota Tacoma, and Chevrolet Colorado/GMC Canyon twins.

The Ridgeline debuted for the 2006 model year and the current second-generation version dates back to the 2017 model year. It got a facelift for 2021, so it carries over to 2022 essentially unchanged. Trim levels include the base Ridgeline Sport, midlevel RTL and RTL-E, and the range-topping Black Edition, which is what we sampled for this review.

2022 GMC Sierra 2500HD

7/10

2022 Honda Ridgeline

8/10

The 2022 GMC Sierra 2500HD, redesigned for the 2020 model year, boasted a bold exterior with a tall hood, squared-off lines, and a massive grille, giving it a commanding presence. While its exterior design was considered one of the better-looking heavy-duty trucks, the interior fell short in material quality compared to competitors like Ram and Ford. Despite being spacious, the cabin wasn't as roomy as the Ram 1500 or Ford Super Duty. The Sierra 2500HD offered five trim levels, each with distinct features, catering to different needs from basic utility to luxury off-roading. The AT4 trim, which we tested, featured rugged aesthetics and luxurious interior touches, making it a handsome package for off-road enthusiasts.

In contrast, the 2022 Honda Ridgeline, built on a unibody platform, offered a more car-like construction, providing increased rigidity. Its styling was conservative, with a snub nose and classic pickup rear view. The Ridgeline's front-end styling was updated in 2021 to appear more truck-like. Available with Honda Performance Development packages, the Ridgeline could be visually enhanced, though our Black Edition test vehicle featured a more subdued look. Inside, the Ridgeline's no-nonsense design was complemented by high-quality fit and finish, with features like leather upholstery and heated seats. However, the piano black trim was prone to smudging and scratching, detracting from the otherwise well-equipped interior.

Performance

2022 GMC Sierra 2500HD

8/10

2022 Honda Ridgeline

7/10

The 2022 GMC Sierra 2500HD was equipped with powerful engine options, including a 6.6-liter V8 and an optional Duramax diesel engine, producing 445 horsepower and 910 pound-feet of torque. Despite its impressive power, it was outperformed in towing capacity by competitors like the Ford F-250 Super Duty and Ram 2500. The Sierra 2500HD's ride was jittery when unladen but improved with added weight. The AT4 trim excelled in off-road conditions, thanks to its robust equipment, including a locking rear differential and off-road suspension. However, a slight steering column vibration was noted during off-road testing.

The 2022 Honda Ridgeline, with its 3.5-liter V6 engine, produced 280 horsepower and 262 pound-feet of torque. Its towing capacity of 5,000 pounds was modest compared to other midsize pickups. The Ridgeline's nine-speed automatic transmission was slow to respond, and the engine start-stop system was sluggish. However, the Ridgeline excelled in handling and ride quality, offering a comfortable and quiet cabin. Its unibody platform and independent suspension provided a level of precision unmatched by traditional trucks, though its off-road capability was limited by its design and ground clearance.

Form and function

2022 GMC Sierra 2500HD

9/10

2022 Honda Ridgeline

9/10

The 2022 GMC Sierra 2500HD offered three cab configurations and two bed lengths, accommodating up to six passengers. Its spacious interior provided ample headroom and legroom, though getting into the truck required effort due to its height. The Sierra 2500HD featured convenient storage options, including a wide center console, dual glove boxes, and hidden rear seat compartments. The MultiPro tailgate offered six functions for improved cargo access, and power outlets were available in the cabin and bed for added convenience.

The 2022 Honda Ridgeline, available only with a four-door crew cab and 64-inch bed, balanced passenger and cargo space well. Its bed included a lockable in-bed trunk with a drain plug, a spare tire slot, and an in-bed audio system. The Dual-Action Tailgate and wide bed allowed for versatile cargo handling. Inside, the Ridgeline offered under-seat storage, a large center console, and a wireless phone charger. While it didn't excel in headroom or legroom on paper, its wider stance and lower cowl height provided a more spacious feel.

Technology

2022 GMC Sierra 2500HD

8/10

2022 Honda Ridgeline

6/10

The 2022 GMC Sierra 2500HD featured a range of infotainment options, with either a 7-inch or 8-inch touchscreen. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto were standard on higher trims, and a navigation system was available. The Bose premium audio system delivered rich sound, though the voice-recognition system had some quirks. The Sierra's 15 available camera views, including a "transparent trailer" view, enhanced towing and visibility.

The 2022 Honda Ridgeline came standard with an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, including Apple CarPlay/Android Auto connectivity. While the interface was not cutting-edge, it was easy to navigate, with analog controls for vital functions. The Ridgeline's infotainment system was basic but functional, with available SiriusXM and navigation on higher trims.

Safety

2022 Honda Ridgeline

8/10

The 2022 GMC Sierra 2500HD offered a range of driver-assistive features, including automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, and blind-spot monitoring. Standard safety features included HD Surround Vision and a Teen Driver system. However, due to its high GVWR, it was not rated by NHTSA or IIHS.

The 2022 Honda Ridgeline received top scores in most IIHS crash tests and a five-star overall safety rating from NHTSA. It came standard with Honda Sensing driver aids, including automatic emergency braking and lane keep assist. Blind spot monitoring was available on higher trims, though a 360-degree camera system was absent.
