2022 BMW X3 Reviews Summary

Since its inception in 2003, the BMW X3 has grown to become one of the brand’s top sellers. And starting with its second generation (circa 2010), the luxury compact crossover has been built at BMW Spartanburg—the automaker’s only United States manufacturing facility. Incidentally, because Spartanburg is the global producer of every gas-powered BMW crossover besides the X1 and X2, the plant also boasts the highest production numbers of any BMW plant worldwide. One can speculate that the popular X3 has a lot to do with that.

Last redesigned for 2018, the X3 receives a rather hefty mid-cycle refresh for 2022. Although the xDrive30e plug-in hybrid has been dropped from the lineup, updates to the remaining models include design tweaks, new engines, more technology, and an expanded suite of safety features.

2023 Lexus GX Reviews Summary

Thanks to the rise of car-based crossovers, today’s body-on-frame SUVs appeal to buyers with specific use-cases in mind: towing and driving off-road. Luxury SUVs like the 2023 Lexus GX appeal to an even narrower cross-section of buyers: those who want to tow or drive off-road, and do either in style and comfort. With a V8 engine as its trump card, the GX remains compelling amid its small pool of competition, but due to a combination of age and a lack of innovation, Lexus’s only real off-road SUV has fallen out of favor for anyone not enamored by a V8 growl.

2022 BMW X3

7/10

2023 Lexus GX

7/10

The 2022 BMW X3 presented a refreshed exterior design with a more aggressive stance, featuring a larger kidney grille and adaptive full LED headlights that were slimmer by 0.4 inches. The rear of the vehicle showcased new taillights with a black surround and pincer claw-shaped brake light LEDs, adding a modern touch. The X3 offered a variety of exterior options, including an M Sport Package and new metallic colors like Brooklyn Grey and Tanzanite Blue II. The interior of the X3 was well-appointed, with dark oak wood trim, eight-way power-adjustable front Sport seats, and a panoramic moonroof available on certain models. The cabin was designed for comfort, with ambient lighting offering 11 color combinations and a range of seating materials, including SensaTec synthetic leather and optional Vernasca leather.

In contrast, the 2023 Lexus GX boasted a commanding presence with its large spindle grille and 8.1 inches of ground clearance. The GX Black Line Special Edition returned with limited availability and exclusive paint colors. Despite its luxury badge, the GX's interior featured a significant amount of plastic, though it did include luxury touches like heated and cooled front seats and leather upholstery. The GX's design leaned towards a sleeker aesthetic compared to other blocky Toyota designs, and its short wheelbase and minimal overhangs suggested a focus on off-road capability. The interior offered practical features like a deep center console bin and adjustable center armrest, but the third row was tight and the cargo space limited.

Performance

2022 BMW X3

7/10

2023 Lexus GX

6/10

The 2022 BMW X3 offered a range of performance options, starting with the sDrive30i and xDrive30i models, both powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine producing 248 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. These models achieved a 0-60 mph time of 6 seconds. The X3 M40i, on the other hand, featured a 3.0-liter turbocharged six-cylinder engine with a mild-hybrid system, delivering 382 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque, with a 0-60 mph time of 4.4 seconds. The M40i also included performance enhancements like a flap-controlled sports exhaust system and adaptive suspension. Fuel economy for the X3 varied, with the sDrive30i achieving 23 mpg city and 29 mpg highway, while the M40i was rated at 21 mpg city and 26 mpg highway.

The 2023 Lexus GX was defined by its 4.6-liter V8 engine, producing 301 horsepower and 329 pound-feet of torque, paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. While the GX's V8 offered a satisfying sound and linear power delivery, it lagged behind more modern engines in terms of output and fuel efficiency. The GX had a towing capacity of 6,500 pounds but struggled with fuel economy, achieving an EPA estimate of 15 mpg city and 19 mpg highway. The GX's driving dynamics were improved over the years, with a Torsen torque-sensing limited-slip differential and a 4WD system that adjusted based on wheel slip, making it more capable off-road.

Form and function

2022 BMW X3

7/10

2023 Lexus GX

6/10

The 2022 BMW X3 provided a comfortable and practical interior with seating for five and ample cargo space. The rear seats featured a 40/20/40-split, allowing for flexible storage options. The X3's interior was designed with ergonomics in mind, offering a redesigned center console and a larger standard infotainment system. The SensaTec seats were comfortable, with the option to upgrade to Vernasca leather for added luxury. The X3's sport seats were supportive, and the vehicle's overall design allowed for easy access to frequently used controls.

The 2023 Lexus GX offered a spacious interior with plenty of cubby space for small items. The center console was deep, and the front cupholders were conveniently placed. The GX retained physical controls, which were appreciated by those who preferred hard buttons over touchscreens. The second row was comfortable, with captain's chairs available, but the third row was tight and best suited for occasional use. The GX's cargo space was limited, with only 11.6 cubic feet behind the third row, expanding to 64.7 cubic feet with both the second and third rows folded.

Technology

2022 BMW X3

2023 Lexus GX

6/10

The 2022 BMW X3 featured BMW Live Cockpit Plus with iDrive 7 telematics, offering a 10.25-inch infotainment screen with navigation, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and Amazon Alexa integration. The system was customizable, with an optional Live Cockpit Professional providing larger screens and a fully digital experience. The X3 also offered a 12-speaker HiFi sound system, with a Harman Kardon surround sound system available on the M40i. Additional tech options included a Convenience Package and a Premium Package, adding features like a panoramic sunroof and heated seats.

The 2023 Lexus GX's infotainment system, updated in 2022, featured a 10.3-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Amazon Alexa. However, the system felt dated compared to other Lexus models, with lagging graphics and a less intuitive interface. The GX included a 17-speaker Mark Levinson stereo and Lexus Enform Remote for remote-start capabilities. While the infotainment technology was not the GX's strong suit, it excelled in off-road capability, with features like a two-speed transfer case, downhill assist, and the Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System.

The 2022 BMW X3 received a five-star crash safety rating from the NHTSA and included a comprehensive suite of safety features. Standard equipment included adaptive LED headlights, a rearview camera, adaptive cruise control, and active blind-spot monitoring. The X3 also offered optional packages like the Parking Assistance Package and Driving Assistant Professional Package, adding features like a 360-degree camera view and active lane-keep assist.

The 2023 Lexus GX had not been crash tested by the NHTSA or IIHS, but it included several advanced driver assistance systems. Standard features included automatic emergency braking, lane-departure alert, adaptive cruise control, and parking assist. While the GX lacked some top-end features, it benefited from Toyota and Lexus's commitment to safety technology.
