2022 BMW X3 Reviews Summary

Since its inception in 2003, the BMW X3 has grown to become one of the brand’s top sellers. And starting with its second generation (circa 2010), the luxury compact crossover has been built at BMW Spartanburg—the automaker’s only United States manufacturing facility. Incidentally, because Spartanburg is the global producer of every gas-powered BMW crossover besides the X1 and X2, the plant also boasts the highest production numbers of any BMW plant worldwide. One can speculate that the popular X3 has a lot to do with that.

Last redesigned for 2018, the X3 receives a rather hefty mid-cycle refresh for 2022. Although the xDrive30e plug-in hybrid has been dropped from the lineup, updates to the remaining models include design tweaks, new engines, more technology, and an expanded suite of safety features.

2022 Genesis GV70 Reviews Summary

Hyundai’s Genesis luxury brand has only been around for about five years, but it’s progressed so much in that time it seems like much longer than that. Genesis has quickly gone from selling two repurposed Hyundai sedans to fielding a full lineup of luxury cars and creating a distinct identity through bold design.

The 2022 Genesis GV70 is the brand’s latest effort. Not to be confused with the Genesis G70 sedan, the GV70 is a crossover SUV positioned below the recently-launched Genesis GV80 in size and price, meaning it competes with the Acura RDX, Audi Q5, BMW X3, Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class, Volvo XC60, and numerous other small luxury SUVs. As with the larger GV80 and the Genesis sedans, the challenge for the GV70 will be convincing new-car buyers to abandon familiar nameplates for something they might not have heard of.

The GV70 launches with a 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine and optional 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged V6. The four-cylinder is available with Standard, Select, Advanced, and Sport Prestige trim levels, while the V6 engine is available with all trim levels except the Select. Our test car was a GV70 3.5T, a range-topping AWD Sport Prestige model with the 3.5-liter V6.

Look and feel

2022 BMW X3

7/10

2022 Genesis GV70

9/10

The 2022 BMW X3 presented a refreshed exterior with a more aggressive stance, highlighted by a larger kidney grille and adaptive full LED headlights that were slimmer by 0.4 inches. The redesigned front bumper and new vertical air intakes added to its modern look, while the rear featured new taillights with a black surround and pincer claw-shaped brake light LEDs. The X3 offered nine exterior finishes, including new metallic colors like Brooklyn Grey and Tanzanite Blue II. The interior was well-appointed with dark oak wood trim, eight-way power-adjustable front Sport seats, and a panoramic moonroof available on certain models. The cabin, though not as fashion-forward as some competitors, was comfortable and functional, with ambient lighting options and a variety of seating materials and colors.

The 2022 Genesis GV70 inherited some styling elements from other Genesis models but maintained a unique appearance with its quad LED strip headlights and taillights, large shield-shaped grille, and sloping roofline. The Sport Prestige models featured unique styling elements like big fake vents and 21-inch wheels with a web pattern. Inside, the GV70 had an elliptical theme inspired by an airplane wing, with most controls housed in a thin elliptical pod. The interior offered a wide array of color options and luxurious materials like Nappa leather upholstery. The GV70's design was minimal yet functional, with a rotary gear selector and infotainment controller adding a touch of sophistication.

Performance

2022 BMW X3

7/10

2022 Genesis GV70

7/10

The 2022 BMW X3 offered a range of powertrains, starting with a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine producing 248 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque for the sDrive30i and xDrive30i models. These models achieved a 0-60 mph time of 6 seconds. The M40i variant featured a 3.0-liter turbocharged six-cylinder engine with a mild-hybrid system, delivering 382 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque, with a 0-60 mph time of 4.4 seconds. The X3's fuel economy varied, with the sDrive30i rated at 23 mpg city and 29 mpg highway, while the M40i achieved 21 mpg city and 26 mpg highway. The X3 provided a balanced driving experience, with the M40i offering more dynamic performance and a sportier feel.

The 2022 Genesis GV70 came with two engine options: a 2.5-liter turbo-four producing 300 horsepower and 311 lb-ft of torque, and a 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6 generating 375 horsepower and 391 lb-ft of torque. Both engines were paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and standard all-wheel drive. The GV70 featured a rear electronic limited-slip differential and launch control, emphasizing its sporty character. The Sport+ drive mode enhanced throttle response and transmission behavior, but the GV70's chassis and steering lacked the sharpness of some competitors. The GV70 excelled in highway cruising, though its firm ride and lack of solidity detracted from its luxury appeal.

Form and function

2022 Genesis GV70

The 2022 BMW X3 offered a spacious interior with seating for five, though the rear middle seat was best suited for smaller passengers. The rear seats featured a 40/20/40-split, providing ample cargo space when folded. The X3's interior was comfortable, with SensaTec faux-leather seats and optional Vernasca leather for added luxury. The redesigned center console and larger infotainment screen improved ergonomics and accessibility. The X3's power tailgate and optional hands-free opening added convenience for loading cargo.

The 2022 Genesis GV70 provided mid-pack interior space for the segment, with adequate legroom and good rear-seat visibility. Cargo space measured 28.9 cubic feet with the rear seats in place and 56.9 cubic feet when folded. The GV70's daring interior design compromised storage space, with a slim center console and thin door pockets. The front seats in the Sport Prestige model were heavily bolstered, offering heating, ventilation, massage, and posture-assist functions. However, some controls were buried in touchscreen menus, making them less accessible.
