The 2021 Nissan Rogue wore handsome new styling with a more technical appearance, positioning itself with a bold SUV look rather than appearing as a mere car. Dark gray plastic cladding covered its lower perimeter, and bold, simulated skid plates together with lower door protection contributed to a rugged aesthetic. However, some found this styling a bit too audacious, especially on the back bumper.

The clean LED lighting elements, prominent V-Motion grille, and well-proportioned body granted the Rogue a modern aesthetic, complemented by aluminum wheels up to 19 inches in diameter. Optional two-tone paint with a black roof treatment added a customized feel. The Rogue came in four versions: the base S, the popular SV, the slightly luxurious SL, and the upscale Platinum, with prices ranging from $25,650 to $35,430 before destination charges.

The interior of the tested Rogue SL was light and spacious, featuring Almond leather and a panoramic glass sunroof. Abundant soft-touch surfaces, appealing simulated wood trim, and fabric-wrapped windshield pillars enhanced the cabin's sense of quality. The Platinum trim took luxury further with quilted semi-aniline leather, contrast stitching, and ambient lighting. Despite the Rogue's 1980s-like climate control display and the inclusion of a CD player, it offered modern technology like wireless Apple CarPlay.

In contrast, the 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLB fit between the automaker's GLA and GLC SUVs. It came in two specifications: the GLB250 and the sportier AMG GLB35. The latter featured a more sophisticated AWD system and sportier styling elements including an AMG-specific grille and performance exhaust. The GLB250 started at $38,600, not including the $1,050 destination charge, while our test AMG GLB35 began at $51,000 and totaled $57,250 with options.

The GLB's design prioritized function over form; its steep windshield angle and nearly vertical rear window were undeniable but unattractive features. The AMG version's 21-inch multi-spoke wheels lent some style and presence. Inside, the GLB adhered to Mercedes-Benz tradition, with high-definition instrumentation, artistic air vents, and impressive ambient lighting. Though the controls took time to master, the overall quality was evident, though road noise could become an issue with the larger wheels.

The 2021 Nissan Rogue, despite its stylish appearance, needed more power. Weighing close to 3,500 pounds, it was powered by a direct-injected 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine producing 181 horsepower and 181 pound-feet of torque. While adequate for daily driving, the continuously variable transmission (CVT) did a decent job but left something to be desired. It provided pre-programmed ratios to mimic a traditional automatic feel, and paddle shifters were available but seldom used.

The Rogue's available AWD, 8.2 inches of ground clearance, and new driving modes for Snow and Off-Road made it somewhat capable off the beaten path. However, the naturally aspirated engine could feel underpowered, especially in challenging terrains. Fuel economy for the tested Rogue SL with FWD was 27.5 mpg, slightly below the EPA rating.

The ride and handling were strengths, thanks to a new architecture that used 35% high-strength steel and features like Brake-induced Intelligent Trace Control, Active Ride Control, and Vehicle Motion Control. The Rogue's steering dynamics were vastly improved over its predecessor, offering a smooth and predictable experience.

Conversely, the 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLB employed a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. The AMG GLB35 version delivered 302 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque, a significant improvement over the GLB250. The AMG SpeedShift eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission and AMG Performance variable 4Matic AWD ensured excellent performance, with the GLB35 reaching 60 mph in just 5.1 seconds.

However, this performance came at a cost: fuel economy. The AMG GLB35 was officially rated at 22 mpg combined, and our testing yielded 21.8 mpg. The braking system and AMG Ride Control adaptive damping sport suspension enhanced handling but compromised daily driving comfort. The ride was firm, especially with the 21-inch wheels, and road noise could be quite loud.

For driving enthusiasts, the AMG GLB35 offered an exhilarating experience on twisty roads. In Sport+ mode, the engine responded eagerly, providing a thrilling and nimble ride. However, for typical daily driving, the GLB250 might be a more practical choice.

The 2021 Nissan Rogue aimed for comfort with its Zero Gravity seat designs, which purportedly reduced stress on bones and joints. The upgraded seats in the new model enhanced comfort across all trims, with various upholstery options ranging from cloth in the S trim to premium leather in the Platinum. The Platinum trim featured advanced tech like a 9-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, and a 10.8-inch head-up display.
