2021 BMW X7 Reviews Summary

In some parts of America, large luxury three-row SUVs are commonplace, but the list of available models is relatively short. Until recently, one famous German automaker was missing from the menu, but when the X7 arrived for the 2019 model year as a new BMW, that changed.

Based on the BMW X5 and built in the same South Carolina factory, the 2021 BMW X7 sees a few changes for 2021. The standard xDrive40i model gains a 48-volt mild-hybrid powertrain offering an incremental increase in efficiency, BMW cancels the xDrive50i version, and the performance-tuned Alpina XB7 debuts.

BMW also modifies the SUV’s standard, optional, and package equipment this year, restricting many of the X7’s most decadent features to the Alpina XB7.

2022 Ford Explorer Reviews Summary

Two years ago, Ford redesigned its popular Explorer midsize three-row SUV. It moved to a rear-drive platform, added an optional hybrid powertrain, and offered everything from a value-rich base model to a luxurious Platinum trim level. Since then, Ford has added ST-Line, Timberline, and King Ranch trim levels while simultaneously honing the Explorer’s packaging to appeal to the broadest cross-section of Americans possible.

2021 BMW X7

8/10

2022 Ford Explorer

8/10

The 2021 BMW X7 was a standout in the luxury SUV segment, often seen navigating the bustling streets of Los Angeles. It was known for its superior interior quality, surpassing that of the Cadillac Escalade, and boasted more prestige than the Infiniti QX80 or Lincoln Navigator. The X7 also offered advanced technological features that outshone the Lexus LX 570, and its visual presence was more commanding than the Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class. Despite its impressive attributes, the choice of a luxury SUV often came down to personal preference, and the X7 was no exception.

The X7 was available in three versions, with the xDrive40i starting at $74,900, the M50i at $99,800, and the Alpina BX7 at $141,300. The test vehicle, an X7 xDrive40i, was equipped with 22-inch aluminum wheels, premium leather, and a host of options, bringing its price to $91,745. Its massive grille, a signature BMW design, was fitting for the large SUV, and its styling was both traditional and glamorous. Inside, the X7 shared many features with the X5, offering high-tech design and quality materials, though some quirks required getting used to.

The 2022 Ford Explorer offered a wide range of models, from the base version at $33,745 to the top-tier King Ranch at $54,495, excluding the $1,495 destination charge. The lineup included the rugged Timberline and luxurious King Ranch trims, with the new ST-Line adding a sporty flair. The King Ranch test vehicle featured 4WD, premium paint, and a sunroof, totaling $59,880. While visually similar to other Explorers, the King Ranch stood out with its emblems and wheels.

The Explorer's design, based on a rear-drive platform, gave it a sporty look with a long hood and floating roof effect. Inside, the King Ranch offered exclusive leather seating and branding, though the interior mixed quality with some less impressive materials. Despite this, it generally felt worthy of its price. The Explorer's third-row seat was best suited for children, and while storage space was limited, the SUV provided practical features like a hands-free liftgate and ample cargo space.

2022 Ford Explorer

9/10

The 2021 BMW X7 xDrive40i featured a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine with 335 horsepower and 331 lb-ft of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and xDrive AWD. The eBoost mild-hybrid system aimed to improve fuel economy, though EPA ratings showed a slight decrease to 19 mpg city, 24 mpg highway, and 21 mpg combined. The X7 accelerated to 60 mph in 5.8 seconds, offering smooth and powerful performance. Despite its weight, the X7 handled well, though body motions could detract from driving enjoyment. The Dynamic Handling Package improved maneuverability and stability, while M Sport brakes provided reliable stopping power.

The 2022 Ford Explorer offered three powertrains, with the base engine being a 2.3-liter turbocharged four-cylinder producing 300 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque. A hybrid option combined a 3.3-liter V6 with electric power for 318 hp and 322 lb-ft of torque, offering better efficiency. The top-tier twin-turbo 3.0-liter V6 delivered 400 hp and 415 lb-ft of torque, standard on the King Ranch, ST, and Platinum trims. The King Ranch test vehicle averaged 20.6 mpg, with the V6 providing strong acceleration and towing capacity. The Explorer's ride was robust, handling off-road terrain well, and offering an engaging driving experience.

The 2021 BMW X7's interior was luxurious, with features like heated and massaging seats, premium leather, and a five-zone climate control system. Front-seat comfort was exceptional, and the second-row captain's chairs were also comfortable, though access could be challenging. The third-row seat accommodated adults, albeit with some effort. Cargo space was limited behind the third row but expanded to 90.4 cubic feet with seats folded.

The 2022 Ford Explorer King Ranch provided comfort for families, with heated and ventilated seats, a heated steering wheel, and massaging front seats. The second-row seats were nearly as comfortable, but the third row was cramped for adults. Storage space was limited, with missed opportunities for additional compartments. The hands-free liftgate revealed 18.2 cubic feet of cargo space, expanding to 87.8 cubic feet with seats folded.

The 2021 BMW X7 featured Live Cockpit Professional with a 12.3-inch display and iDrive 7.0 infotainment system, offering Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and enhanced SiriusXM. The system included wireless charging, voice recognition, and gesture control, though the latter was inconsistent. A head-up display was also available, though visibility was limited with polarized sunglasses.

The 2022 Ford Explorer offered Sync 3 infotainment with either an 8-inch or 10.1-inch touchscreen. The system included FordPass Connect, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a premium sound system. However, the voice recognition system was less effective, struggling with navigation and commands. The King Ranch featured a digital instrument display and Active Park Assist 2.0, with an optional rear-seat entertainment system.

The 2022 Ford Explorer earned a Top Safety Pick+ rating from the IIHS, with standard Ford Co-Pilot360 features like forward-collision warning and lane-keeping assist. Co-Pilot360 Assist+ added adaptive cruise control and evasive steering assist. The system generally performed well, though steering wheel sensitivity was an issue. The Explorer's semi-autonomous tech handled various driving conditions effectively.
