2020 Ford Explorer Reviews Summary

For nearly 30 years, the Ford Explorer has settled into the American lexicon like Cheerios. We've gobbled up millions of them, from the rock-crawling Eddie Bauers of the 1990s to the brand-new ST that can take down sports cars. The 2020 Explorer brings an all-new chassis, cranks up the technology, and introduces hybrid and high-performance powertrains in a space the size of a small living room. The Explorer's also getting very expensive while other automakers catch on to Ford's winning formula—for a lot less money.

2021 BMW X7 Reviews Summary

In some parts of America, large luxury three-row SUVs are commonplace, but the list of available models is relatively short. Until recently, one famous German automaker was missing from the menu, but when the X7 arrived for the 2019 model year as a new BMW, that changed.

Based on the BMW X5 and built in the same South Carolina factory, the 2021 BMW X7 sees a few changes for 2021. The standard xDrive40i model gains a 48-volt mild-hybrid powertrain offering an incremental increase in efficiency, BMW cancels the xDrive50i version, and the performance-tuned Alpina XB7 debuts.

BMW also modifies the SUV’s standard, optional, and package equipment this year, restricting many of the X7’s most decadent features to the Alpina XB7.

Look and feel

2020 Ford Explorer

5/10

2021 BMW X7

8/10

The 2020 Ford Explorer was a striking vehicle, boasting a more refined and athletic design compared to its predecessors. Its widened headlights, large grille, and distinctive "Explorer" lettering on the hood gave it a recognizable and bold presence. The ST version, with its black 21-inch rims and quad exhaust pipes, was particularly eye-catching. However, the interior left much to be desired, with materials that felt subpar for its price range. Despite the padded dashboard and solid switchgear, the overall feel was more akin to a lower-tier vehicle, making it less appealing when compared to similarly priced competitors.

In contrast, the 2021 BMW X7 exuded luxury and sophistication, both inside and out. Its interior quality surpassed that of many competitors, offering premium materials and advanced technology. The X7's design was both traditional and glamorous, with its massive grille fitting the large SUV's stature. Inside, the X7 shared high-tech design elements with the X5, providing a seamless blend of luxury and functionality. The vehicle's presence on the road was undeniable, making it a top choice for those seeking prestige and comfort.

Performance

2021 BMW X7

7/10

The 2020 Ford Explorer offered a range of engines, with the ST trim featuring a 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 producing 400 horsepower and 415 lb-ft of torque. This engine, paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission, delivered smooth and addictive power. The Explorer's rear-wheel-drive chassis provided excellent weight distribution, enhancing its nimble handling and cornering capabilities. The vehicle also offered a 2.3-liter turbo inline-four engine with 300 hp and a hybrid option with a net 318 hp. Towing capacity varied, with the V6 AWD capable of towing up to 5,600 pounds.

The 2021 BMW X7 xDrive40i featured a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six engine with 335 horsepower and 331 lb-ft of torque, paired with an eight-speed sport automatic transmission. The addition of BMW's eBoost mild-hybrid technology aimed to improve fuel economy, though EPA ratings showed a slight decrease. The X7's performance was smooth and powerful, with a 0-60 mph time of 5.8 seconds. Despite its nearly 5,400-pound curb weight, the X7 demonstrated impressive speed and fluidity, though its handling could be challenging on tighter roads.

Form and function

2020 Ford Explorer

9/10

2021 BMW X7

8/10

The 2020 Ford Explorer provided ample interior space, with comfortable seating for six-foot-tall adults in the third row. The second row offered first-class amenities, including air vents, USB ports, and a panoramic moonroof. Cargo space was generous, with 18 cubic feet behind the third row, 48 cubic feet behind the second row, and 88 cubic feet with all seats folded. The Explorer's physical controls were intuitive, though visibility was hindered by thick D-pillars and fuzzy cameras.

The 2021 BMW X7's interior was luxurious, with heated and ventilated seats, premium leather upholstery, and a five-zone climate control system. The third row was surprisingly accommodating for adults, though accessing it required some maneuvering of the power seats. Cargo space was slightly less than class leaders, with 48.6 cubic feet behind the second row and 90.4 cubic feet with all seats folded. The X7's interior comfort and quality were standout features, making it a top choice for those seeking a premium experience.

Technology

2020 Ford Explorer

7/10

2021 BMW X7

8/10

The 2020 Ford Explorer came equipped with an 8-inch touchscreen featuring Sync 3 infotainment, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and 4G WiFi. The Premium Technology Package added a 10-inch vertical touchscreen and a 12-inch digital instrument cluster. While the system was well-organized, it lacked innovation and customization options. The Co-Pilot360 Assist+ offered semi-automated driving features, though its performance was not as refined as competitors.

The 2021 BMW X7 featured the iDrive 7.0 infotainment system with a 12.3-inch touchscreen, offering Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and enhanced SiriusXM 360L. The system included wireless smartphone charging, natural voice recognition, and gesture control. While the technology was advanced, it could be distracting to navigate while driving. The head-up display was a useful addition, though visibility was limited with polarized sunglasses.

Safety

The 2020 Ford Explorer came standard with Ford Co-Pilot 360, which included forward emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, auto high beams, and lane-keep assist. The Assist+ option added adaptive cruise control with steering assist and reverse braking. The Explorer received an Acceptable rating in the IIHS small overlap test on the driver's side.

The 2021 BMW X7 included standard safety technologies, with additional features available in the Driving Assistance Professional Package and Parking Assistance Package. The X7's advanced driving assistance systems were smooth and trustworthy, though some lane-maintenance issues were noted. The Parking Assistance Package added semi-automated parking assist and a surround-view camera.
