The Ford Mustang Mach-E is Ford’s very first bespoke electric vehicle. Ford has experimented with electrification in the past, but the Mustang Mach-E is the first vehicle from the manufacturer that was built from the ground up as an EV. It debuted in 2019, but wasn’t available for purchase until the 2021 model year. 2021-model-year Mustang Mach-Es are the most rare, though Ford still built over 27,000 examples that year. There were also a number of “First Edition” trim levels in 2021, though the equipment the trim level contained is essentially what’s in the Premium trim level now. 2022 Mustang Mach-Es are more plentiful. 2022 and forward also has the slight advantage of improved usable capacity in the batteries.

The primary disadvantage of the Mustang Mach-E is that you’ll have to listen to about 85 percent of the people you come in contact with explaining how it’s not a Mustang. Seriously. It’s tedious. Beyond that, the weird button that opens the door is a little precious and silly. You’d be better off with an actual door handle. Other than that, though, our experiences in the Mustang Mach-E have been outstanding.

The Mustang Mach-E is not a luxury vehicle, but it's interior offers a dramatic improvement over the Model Y: Greater comfort, better sight lines, and more intuitive controls. For our money, the Mustang Mach-E has the most premium interior ever produced on a Ford vehicle that didn’t bear the Lincoln name.

Is the Ford Mustang Mach-E a reliable car?

There have been several recalls of 2021 and 2022 Mustang Mach-Es for software updates. Several were also recalled for an overheating battery contactor, which made itself known after DC Fast Charging, or what Ford called “wide open pedal events.” It applied to only GT models and trims with the extended range battery. Otherwise, the complaints about Mustang Mach-E ownership have been largely quiet.

Is the Ford Mustang Mach-E worth the cost?

When new, the Mustang Mach-E starts at $42,995, but that’s for the standard range (250 mile) battery. If you can live with that and can make the most of the full $7,500 tax rebate, you can be in a Mach-E for what you’d pay for a nicely equipped Escape. You can’t get BlueCruise hands-free cruise control in an Escape, but It comes standard in the base Mach-E. The performance trim is nice, but you kind of sacrifice the benefits of an EV buy owning something that can hit 60 MPH in 3.5 seconds. With under 30,000 miles, a Mustang Mach-E Premium should cost roughly $35,000 (and you’re still eligible for the maximum $4,000 tax credit for used EVs).
