The Ford Mustang Mach-E just keeps getting better and better.
Summary: In terms of buzz, Ford's sporty all-electric crossover has come a long way since it first sparked outrage for appropriating the famous Mustang name. It seems most have accepted or resigned themselves to an electric Mustang, and the conversation these days seems to be all about how much owners love it-and how much Ford continues to improve it. It got Ford's BlueCruise hands-free driving highway driving technology for 2023. For 2024, Ford raises the bar with a new Rally trim while also giving the rest of the lineup some key upgrades.
Verdict: Thanks to Ford's continued attention, the Mustang Mach-E is a better value proposition than ever. Best of all, the automaker has plans to look after owners of 2023 and older models as well.
The Mustang Mach-E is still a new model by most standards. Having been introduced for the 2021 model year, it’s hardly due for a makeover at this point. Its styling remains distinctive and sharp, with an aggressive front fascia, a sloping-yet-crossover-proportioned profile, and the tri-bar tail lights that are requisites of the Mustang nameplate. The lamps are refreshed for 2024 so that every Mach-E trim now matches the signature lighting of the seventh-generation Ford Mustang, but other updates are mainly focused on individual trims.
The new Rally trim has dethroned the GT Performance Edition as the top-of-the-line Mustang Mach-E, and it gets plenty of unique styling cues to set it apart. LED fog lamps are integrated into its grille in true rally style, along with a front recovery hook. It gets a black roof and a unique front splitter and rear spoiler, both painted Dark Carbonized Gray. Stripes for the hood and decklid and “Mach-E Rally” graphics for the door are also included but not compulsory; the trim can be optioned without them.
Perhaps the most eye-catching detail of the Rally trim is its Oxford White 19-inch wheels. We thought they looked really sharp, with a design clearly referencing the greats in rally racing, and we liked how the black graphics on the wheel dish reflect the shape of its shallow spokes.
The GT trim gets 20-inch wheels. Black aero-style with machine-facing are standard, and machine-faced with Carbonized Gray pockets are available as a standalone option. Or, with the new Bronze Appearance Package, they can be painted Sinister Bronze. The Bronze Appearance Package is limited to the Mustang Mach-E GT and also the badges and front grille shield.
The 2024 Mustang Mach-E’s interior is familiar fare, with the same minimalist dash featuring a large touchscreen front and center and a narrow strip of a screen above the steering wheel. The Ford Performance front seats, with their heavier bolstering and plastic backing around the headrest and shoulders, now come standard on the GT trim. They’ve carried over to the Rally trim, too, but here the plastic trim is Oxford White, making them look even more like they belong on a spaceship.
We’ve long found the Mach-E’s ride to be firmer than we’d like, even on lower trims, and the revised GT proved no exception. The MagneRide damping system that’s now standard on GT did allow for more adjustment by drive mode, but overall, the Mach-E still takes a sports-car-first, crossover-second approach to ride quality. Reports of the diluting of the Mustang brand with an electric SUV may have been greatly exaggerated after all.
Steering feel, too, is decidedly sporty: It’s stiff and very tight, and the wheel really seems to want to spring back to center. But at least to those shopping for the sports-oriented trims, that may very well be welcome. That same audience will likely appreciate the Mustang Mach-E GT Performance Upgrade package which, for $995, increases torque output from the dual-motor powertrain to 700 lb-ft (with an unchanged 480 horsepower). This translates to a zero-to-60-mph time of 3.3 seconds and an 11.8-second quarter mile. We were thrilled to hear that this upgrade can be added later, for two reasons. First, it means less pressure on the shopper in the moment, which is always great. Second, it also means that used-car shoppers can follow the conventional advice and avoid buying the hottest version secondhand. Instead, they can seek out a gently driven lower-powered GT, then add the Performance Upgrade.
Other Ford Performance features are newly standard for the 2024 Mach-E GT, including the aforementioned front seats and MagneRide suspension, as well as the Brembo front brake calipers. All of this is of course standard on the new range-topping Rally trim, which also gets a 1-inch lift and unique suspension tuning meant to account for off-road use in addition to driving on the road. It felt much the same as the GT to us on pavement. We did not have the opportunity to compare the two on loose surfaces, but we did get to put the Mach-E Rally through its paces on a skid pad at DirtFish Rally School in Snoqualmie, Washington. We also got to throw it around a dirt-and-gravel slalom course ominously known as “the Boneyard” and were impressed with its ability to get sideways and give us some laughs.
Ford may have been busy updating the GT and creating the Rally, but the automaker hasn’t ignored the Select and Premium trim levels. Every 2024 Mustang Mach-E gets a new, lighter-weight rear eMotor, which improves both torque and range. The EPA estimates 250 miles of range for the base Mach-E with the standard-range battery pack and single-motor rear-wheel drive (RWD) powertrain. The longest available range for 2024 comes from the Premium trim configured with the extended-range battery and RWD; that sits at 320 miles. The Mach-E GT and Rally are offered exclusively with all-wheel drive, bringing their ranges down to 280 and 265 miles, respectively.
Ford also says it’s sped up the DC fast-charging experience, reducing the time involved by about 20%. The standard-range Mach-E's 72-kWh battery can now go from 10 to 80% in 32 minutes, while the extended-range's 91-kWh version will take about 36 minutes to achieve the same increase. Customers can also access Tesla Supercharger stations with a Ford-supplied adapter.
Interior space is where the Mustang Mach-E’s crossover body style really shines. It offers a total of 34.1 cubic feet of cargo space: 29.7 behind the rear seats, plus a frunk that’s drainable and therefore easy to clean out, making it a great spot to stow anything you don’t want actually inside the vehicle. Folding the rear seats down expands the in-cabin cargo space to 59.7 cubic feet. The driver and front passenger enjoy 38.9 inches of head room and back-seat passengers get 38.2 without the panoramic glass roof, but those numbers actually increases to 40.4 and 39.3 inches with it. Leg room measures 43.3 inches in the front and 38.1 in the rear.
The driver’s seat is power-adjustable in every 2024 Mach-E: eight-way for the base trim and 10-way for the other three. The front passenger gets eight-way power-adjustability starting on the Premium trim. ActiveX seating surfaces are standard, and even the top two trims get this synthetic upholstery rather than real leather. They add in Miko inserts and performance-inspired perforation, though, which truthfully distracted us from noticing that the materials were synthetic. Heated front seats are available on the base trim and standard on the others.
The Mustang Mach-E still comes standard with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto for 2024. It now gets the latest version 4A of Ford’s SYNC infotainment software, which will also be added to prior model years via over-the-air (OTA) updates. In the 2024 Mustang Mach-E, SYNC 4A operates through a 15.5-inch, portrait-oriented touchscreen positioned directly between the driver and front passenger. Climate and temperature controls live on the screen, anchored near the bottom where they can always be found, but the only hard control available to the passenger is the wheel that adjusts stereo volume and power.
Hostility toward screen-based controls seems to be dropping, and we’re feeling increasingly prepared to get on board, but we do think manufacturers need to be more careful than ever about user experience if everything is going to go through a single screen. For example, if navigation is actively running, and particularly if there’s no option to project those instructions to the driver-information display, we think any full-screen interfaces for functions like drive modes should automatically self-dismiss after a few seconds of inactivity and get us back to the time-sensitive task of following directions. This was not our experience with the Mach-E.
Like the F-150 Lightning, the Mustang Mach-E also has Ford’s Intelligent Range system built in. This is a cloud-based feature which takes your route input and considers the temperature, the terrain, the traffic, and even your driving history to keep your range accurate and updated in real time–great news for anyone who suffers from range anxiety.
BlueCruise 1.3, the latest version of Ford’s hands-free highway-driving assist software, is available on every 2024 Mustang Mach-E (OTA updates will bring it to older models as well going forward). A 90-day trial is included with the purchase of the vehicle, and after that time is up, if you’ve enjoyed the enhanced lane-change assist, lane-centering, and in-lane positioning, you’ll have the option to purchase a three-year subscription. We agree with Ford’s assertion that BlueCruise makes long drives less wearing, but our favorite thing about the subscription-based nature of this feature is that shoppers need not feel pressured to commit at the dealership. You can try living with it and try letting it lapse, safe in the knowledge that you can always purchase it later if you miss it. That’s more than we can say for most automotive upgrades.
The 2024 Mach-E also comes equipped with a 360-degree camera and the Ford CoPilot 360 suite of advanced driver-assistance technologies. This includes a blind-spot information system with cross-traffic alert, pre-collision assist with automatic emergency braking, evasive steering assist, automatic high beams, and adaptive cruise control.
The 2023 Ford Mustang Mach-E earned a Top Safety Pick Award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), and the organization has extended the same scores in the small overlap front, overlap front, side, and child seat anchor categories to the 2024 model. The newest Mustang Mach-E underwent independent front crash-prevention testing in both its Premium and GT forms and emerged with the top rating. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) awarded five-star ratings in side crash and rollover testing to every model year of the Mach-E, including 2024.
Ford representatives informed us that the 2024 Mustang Mach-E does qualify for the full $7,500 federal tax credit–if you lease. Lower levels of the Mach-E are available with your choice of RWD or AWD. Pricing starts at $41,890 for the RWD version of the Select trim, including the $1,895 destination fee. Opting for AWD will add $3,500 to the MSRP of the Mach-E Select or $3,000 to Premium, but it’s standard on the $55,890 GT and the $61,890 Rally. That may not be cheap, but it does come in well under the $65k Ford originally projected for its new top trim.
In fact, if our recollection doesn’t deceive us, the Mustang Mach-E has not seen significant price increases for the new model year. That’s unusual, but also quite welcome. Rivals include the Hyundai Ioniq 5 at $43,175, the Kia EV6 at $43,975, the Toyota bZ4X at $44,420, and the Nissan Ariya at $44,555. Rivals for the Mach-E GT and Rally, however, are more like the EV6 GT and the Ioniq 5 N at $62,975 and $67,475, respectively. This effectively places the 2024 Ford Mustang Mach-E at the low end of the pack when it comes to pricing, and while some of its rivals are frankly very, very good, we don’t think it belongs at the low end of your list.
