Why it stands out
The 2021 Toyota Tundra stands out as a full-size pickup that leans on proven fundamentals rather than chasing the newest truck trends. Its design and underpinnings date back to the mid-2000s, yet Toyota kept it relevant with modern infotainment and safety technologies. That combination gives it a distinctive appeal for buyers who want a truck that feels familiar and straightforward, but still has enough contemporary equipment to stay competitive.
It also has several practical strengths that matter in daily use. The Tundra is described as powerful, spacious, and capable of good towing capacity, which fits its core mission as a work-focused truck. At the same time, its age shows in limited bed and cab configurations, poor fuel economy, and outdated technology. For shoppers who value durability, space, and towing ability more than the latest features, the 2021 Toyota Tundra offers a clear and honest package.

Smooth ride, very quite, and comfortable. We love it and won’t be buying but a Toyota Tundra from now on; I just wish that I checked into them sooner, my wife had been wanting one for years. Yes, it is a good value. Only thing missing on mine is a hard cover camper for the bed. But I plan on getting that taken care of. Compared to my last truck, 1500 Ram has nothing on this truck. This truck has more in its extras, smoother and quiter ride, and it looks better.

2021 Toyota Tundra Price Trends
CarGurus tracks the prices of millions of used car listings every year. See how the average price of 2021 Toyota Tundra prices has changed over time.
See more price trendsHow much does the 2021 Toyota Tundra cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $39,353 |
| Year-Round Low | $36,620.16 |
| Year-Round High | $40,076.96 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $39,558 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −0.52% |
Prices have held steady compared to this time last year, signaling a stable and predictable market for this model year.
There are 1,835 listings available, which gives you a solid pool to compare trims, mileage, and condition. If you find a listing below $36,620.16, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2021 Toyota Tundra a good car?
Yes — 4.55/5 is a strong user rating for this model year, and the expert rating is 7.33/10. The standout strength is Safety at 9/10.
Owners consistently praise its spaciousness, powerful performance, and reliability, and they also call out the smooth ride and quality construction. The trade-offs are the poor fuel economy and the lack of modern tech features, which show up in both owner feedback and the expert review. That makes the Tundra a strong fit if you want a straightforward, work-focused truck with a familiar feel rather than the newest cabin experience. Good and great deals account for 32.3% of listings, so there is still room to shop selectively.
Is the 2021 Toyota Tundra reliable?
Owners rate it 4.55/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction. The owner summary also points to reliability, dependability, and a truck that feels trouble-free enough for buyers who want something they can count on over the long haul. The expert review reinforces that theme by describing the Tundra as a rugged pickup that can take some abuse and by emphasizing Toyota’s focus on keeping it relevant over time. Toyota also includes a standard maintenance-friendly ownership setup with widely available service support, which helps reduce day-to-day hassle. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about durability and more about living with older-tech compromises and fuel costs.
What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Toyota Tundra?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 75.3% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still check the history report carefully, because a clean listing percentage does not replace a proper records review. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that focuses on wear items, signs of hard use, and whether the truck’s condition matches its mileage and asking price. Since this is a work-oriented pickup, pay close attention to cabin condition, bed condition, and any evidence of towing or off-road use.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The SR is the most basic version, with halogen headlights with LED accents, steel wheels, manual climate control, cloth seating, and fewer comfort features than higher trims.
- Powertrain: It uses a 5.7-liter V8 with 391 horsepower and 401 pound-feet of torque, paired with a six-speed automatic; fuel economy is modest, especially if you choose four-wheel drive.
- Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense P is standard, with forward-collision warning and avoidance, pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning, automatic high beams, and adaptive cruise control; blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are optional.
- Infotainment: A standard 7-inch touchscreen includes Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Amazon Alexa, while an available 8-inch screen adds navigation; OTA capability is not mentioned.
- Fuel efficiency: Rear-wheel drive is rated at 13 mpg city, 17 highway, 15 combined, while four-wheel drive is rated at 13 mpg city, 17 highway, 14 combined.
Which 2021 Toyota Tundra trim should I buy?
The 2021 Toyota Tundra is offered in 6 trim levels: SR, SR5, Limited, TRD Pro, Platinum, and 1794 Edition.
Here's the short version:
- Base trim: The SR is the value play, but it leaves you with cloth seating, manual climate control, steel wheels, and fewer comfort upgrades.
- Sweet-spot trim: The SR5 is the best balance for most shoppers because it adds power-adjustable front seats and a larger 8-inch touchscreen.
- Premium/top trim: The Platinum is the most upscale choice, with heated-and-ventilated front seats, leather-and-woodgrain trim, and more premium exterior details.
- Off-road trim: The TRD Pro is the one to choose if you want the most serious trail hardware, but its off-road focus makes it less ideal for typical daily driving.
Toyota Safety Sense P is standard across the lineup.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Toyota Tundra?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop with some leverage if you stay patient.
- Deal availability: 32.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,835 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 75.3% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $36,620.16, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2021 Toyota Tundra's resale value?
The current average of $39,353 sits slightly below last year's $39,558.
That small decline suggests the market has stayed relatively stable rather than swinging sharply in either direction. For you as a future seller, that kind of pricing pattern usually points to predictable depreciation instead of a sudden drop in value. It also means condition, mileage, and trim choice should matter a lot when you eventually resell.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.55/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2021 Toyota Tundra safe?
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Toyota Safety Sense P is standard, and it includes forward-collision warning and avoidance, pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning, automatic high beams, and adaptive cruise control. Every Tundra also comes with eight airbags, a tire pressure monitoring system, trailer sway control, and an integrated trailer brake controller. Optional safety features include front and rear parking sensors, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. The main safety caveat is that some of the more helpful driver-assistance features are optional rather than standard.
Should I buy a 2021 Toyota Tundra or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2021 if:
- 32.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 75.3% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.55/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It keeps the old-school V8 formula while adding modern infotainment and standard safety tech.
Consider the 2020 if:
- At $37,498, the 2020 costs less than the current year's $39,353 average.
- It emphasizes reliability and long-term durability.
Consider the 2022 if:
- At $39,581, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $39,353 average.
- It brings an all-new design with broader updates and more modern mechanical choices.
The bottom line: If you want the familiar V8-era Tundra with modern safety and infotainment, the 2021 is the sweet spot. If your priority is lower purchase price, the 2020 is the better value. If you want a full redesign and are willing to pay more, move up to the 2022.
