Why it stands out
The 2021 Toyota Sienna stands out because Toyota gave its minivan a major makeover for the year, adding new style and a hybrid gasoline-electric powertrain that is standard equipment. It also marks the Sienna’s fourth generation of production, and the hybrid version is built on Toyota’s TNGA-K platform. Those changes make it a notably different kind of Sienna than before, with a clear emphasis on efficiency and modernization.
In everyday use, the 2021 Toyota Sienna’s strengths are easy to understand: it is fuel-efficient, has a great ride quality, and is spacious. That combination makes it appealing for families and anyone who wants a comfortable, practical vehicle with plenty of room. Owner feedback reinforces that appeal, with praise for the roomy interior, excellent gas mileage, and smooth handling, especially for road trips.
There are tradeoffs, though. The test-drive data points to uninspired styling and a stereo that is lacking, while owner comments also mention concerns about acceleration, interior material quality, and some missing convenience and connectivity features. Even so, the 2021 Toyota Sienna’s distinctive mix of hybrid efficiency, space, and comfort gives it a strong identity in the minivan segment.

HUD, Gas mileage, Radar cruise with lane trace assist etc. makes it a great vehicle for long road trips. Wish the BSM indicators appear on the HUD and have more options displayed on the HUD as well. Also the Android Auto\Apple Car Play navigation is not projected into HUD. Wish that was included as well.

Generally — 4.33/5 from owners, which points to strong satisfaction with this model year. It also earns an 8.33/10 from our experts.
The model scores 9/10 across Look and feel, Form and function, and Technology.
Drivers consistently praise the roomy interior, excellent gas mileage, and smooth handling, especially for road trips. The hybrid-and-AWD combination also comes through as a satisfying fit for family use. On the other hand, the expert review notes uninspired styling and a stereo that falls short, while owner feedback also points to acceleration and interior-material concerns.

The expert review also describes the engine, motor, and battery combination as proven, which supports confidence in the hybrid setup. Toyota’s hybrid-related component coverage also helps reduce early ownership worry.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about the concept and more about how well a specific van has been maintained and used.
What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Toyota Sienna?
At 74.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle-history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re comparing multiple vans with similar prices. Focus on condition, maintenance records, and signs of heavy family use, since wear can vary a lot in a minivan. If a listing has missing equipment or visible interior wear, that should factor into your decision even if the price looks appealing.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The LE uses a six-speaker stereo, while higher trims add more equipment and nicer materials; the upper grades also bring larger wheels and more upscale tech, so the base trim is the most stripped-down choice.
- Powertrain: A 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine and two electric motors make 243 horsepower. Front-wheel drive is standard, and all-wheel drive is available across the lineup. The CVT helps efficiency, but it can blunt throttle response.
- Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard and includes full-speed range dynamic radar cruise control, lane-tracing assist, pre-collision system with pedestrian and bicyclist detection, lane-departure alert, automatic high beams, and road sign assist. The Star Safety System is also standard.
- Infotainment: A nine-inch touchscreen is standard, along with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Amazon Alexa, and Bluetooth. Wireless phone integration is not mentioned.
- Fuel efficiency: FWD models are rated at 36 mpg city, 36 mpg highway, and 36 mpg combined. AWD models are rated at 35/36/35 mpg combined.
Which 2021 Toyota Sienna trim should I buy?
The 2021 Toyota Sienna is offered in 5 trim levels: LE, XLE, XSE, Limited, Platinum.
Here's the short version:
- LE: This is the value play if you want the hybrid Sienna at the lowest entry price. You still get the standard nine-inch touchscreen, Toyota Safety Sense 2.0, and the core efficiency and space that define the model, but you give up some of the nicer convenience and audio upgrades found higher up the range.
- XLE: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds meaningful comfort and convenience upgrades without jumping all the way to the luxury-oriented upper trims. It also unlocks more available tech and family-friendly options, making it a smart middle ground.
- XSE: This trim leans into a sportier presentation and sits above the XLE in price. It makes sense if you want a more distinctive look and are willing to pay for it, but it is not the most obvious value choice.
- Limited: This is where the Sienna starts to feel notably more upscale, with richer tech and comfort features. If you want a more premium family hauler and can stretch the budget, this is the trim that best balances luxury and practicality.
- Platinum: This is the top-end choice with the most advanced equipment, including the 10-inch head-up display and other premium touches. It suits you best if you want the most fully loaded Sienna and price is less of a concern.
Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 and the Star Safety System are standard across all trims.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Toyota Sienna?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.
- Deal availability: 33.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,232 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.98% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 74.3% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $32,963, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2021 Toyota Sienna's resale value?
The current average of $34,937 sits slightly below last year's $36,012.
That softer pricing suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favorable point. For a future seller, that also means resale value will depend heavily on condition, mileage, and equipment mix rather than just model-year desirability. Well-kept examples with strong service history should stand out more clearly when it’s time to sell.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.33/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2021 Toyota Sienna safe?
The 2021 Toyota Sienna comes with Toyota Safety Sense 2.0, which includes full-speed range dynamic radar cruise control, lane-tracing assist, pre-collision system with pedestrian and bicyclist detection, lane-departure alert, automatic high beams, and road sign assist.
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
The Star Safety System is also standard, along with 10 airbags, a rear-seat reminder system, tire pressure monitoring, and LATCH connectors. That standard safety coverage is a strong point for family buyers, and the driver-assistance suite is included on every trim. Crash-test ratings for this model year were not released in the provided data.
Should I buy a 2021 Toyota Sienna or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2021 if:
- 33.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 74.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.98% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.33/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- Toyota’s major redesign brings a standard hybrid powertrain and a more modern, efficient minivan package.
Consider the 2020 if:
- At $26,705, the 2020 costs less than the current year's $34,937 average.
- It offers practical family space with all-wheel drive as a standout advantage.
Consider the 2022 if:
- At $37,207, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $34,937 average.
- It adds a new Woodland trim for buyers who want a more adventurous look.
The bottom line: If you want the redesigned hybrid Sienna with modern efficiency and strong family appeal, the 2021 is the primary year to target. If your budget is tighter, the 2020 can save you money, while the 2022 makes sense if you want the newer-year alternative and are willing to pay more.
