Air in Gas Tank

Asked by Feb 17, 2017 at 03:28 AM about the 2001 Hyundai Elantra GLS

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I brought the car from an older lady and later was
told that air was in the gas tank.  What's the best
way to fix this problem but inexpensive way. It
takes 15+ mins to fill the tank

There is always air in the gas tank, the problem is when you are refilling the tank with gas, the air is not coming out. This has to do with the EVAP canister. The filter may be plugged or the canister purge valve not working. The EVAP system needs to be looked at to determine the problem.

I should also mention that this is more than likely due to over filling the gas tank. When refilling, you need to stop filling when the gas pump nozzle quits on the first click.
