Probably an EVAP problem..emissions system system. When you fill up, the gas going in displaces air and gas fumes and those fumes (are supposed to) go in to a vent from the tank to a charcoal filled canister that soaks up the fumes, instead of coming out in your face and in to the air we all breathe. The fumes in the canister are purged by intake vacuum when engine is started. You have either a blocked vent tube, a bad valve or the fumes are not being purged and have collected so much there is liquid gasoline in the canister, backing up and not allowing the air/fumes in. Some Stares also still use the old way of collecting displaced air, back in to gas station tank through an additional hose attached to pump hose or beside it, the This is a diagram of how it works, generic, not your car exactly but same basics. I know this thread is old but it can be that the carbon pellets from charcoal canister has been sucked up into the Vent line that go from the vent solenoid under the car to the gas tank. When it’s blocked the fumes from the tank cannot escape and will cause gas pump to click off. You may need to drop the gas tank to access that end of the hose.
