Blown head gasket? Or WORSE?!

Asked by Jun 22, 2014 at 05:57 AM about the 1992 Honda Civic DX Hatchback

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Had overheating issues and was
using a lot of water that wasn't on the
ground anywhere...found a water
pipe with a hole right over the
exhaust manifold so when I fixed that
I thought maybe I had it licked..
...nope...after a 30 mile drive
it wouldn't start and after pulling a
spark plug I found oil all over it. Next
is compression test...right? Any
pointers?

Oil on a spark plug doesn't necessarily mean a bad HG. It could simply be a bad valve cover gasket, specifically the spark plug tube seals. If youre losing a lot of water, pull all the plugs and check for color and debris on them. I would also pull the upper timing cover and look down into the lower cover to see if the water pump is leaking. However if you've overheated the engine you may want to be proactive and just replace the HG and timing kit.
