Warranty on the power train was extended to 10 years and 120,000 on your car. Take it to the dealer for a new engine.

Hyundai will give you a free engine I don't care if it has a hundred and sixty thousand miles on it they will not ask any questions they will give you a loaner car or a rental car and I will replace your engine for free

My car has 158,000 miles on take excellent care . Made a turn two weeks ago car turn off and never came on. Took to a shop they put a starter in it and nothing worked . Took it to Hyundai they ordered an engine a week later and gave me a rental . Only issue is the woman at Hyundai said it takes months. All the engines come from Hyundai in Korea and come in huge shipments. There is also a huge waiting line for replacements . I may have this rental for 3 months

My Sonata has 175,000 miles on it. The engine died yesterday - we had it in for the recall in May where they were supposed to update the software to give you a warning and put the car in safe mode so you can get it to the dealership. It didn't do that, it just died and my mechanic told me it is the engine issue. Is there anyway that Hyundai will cover the new engine? My dealership is telling me to have it towed there, pay them $99.00 to diagnose it and they will "see what they can do". Has anyone else had luck getting them to pay for the engine? Thank you

My 2015 Sonatas engine blew 2 weeks ago and it only had 60000 miles. The dealership is replacing the engine at no cost to me. They also told me the 2014 and 2015 Sonatas had this issue.

My 2014 Hyundai sonata engine just locked up yesterday. I just got my oil change 1/11 and there is no leaks. I have about 124000 miles. I had the knock sensor put on which I thought it was suppose to send some kind of alert if something was going wrong with the motor. My car stop while driving and started smoking.

Hi, i have a Sonata 2011 GLS with 150k miles. The engine just locked yesterday, i had done all recalls. Called Costumer Care now, they said that the car has no recall opened, but i could take to the dealer. I would like to know if in my case is really possible to get a engine or is wast of time to bring it to dealer? Thank you!

I would still take it to the dealer. They can find out the exact reason why it locked and they will probably just give you a new engine. They gave me a new engine and a loaner. It took a month to get my car back but it was all paid for

Thank you Cashly123 Should i tell them anything in particular? Or just bring it to the dealer and ask them to make a diagnosis ?

Just bring it to the dealer. I know when I took mines they wanted to know if I had the paper work for my oil changes, and I know when my engine seized I still had 3000 miles to go before I needed to change it, so that’s how they discovered my engine was basically eating oil and I didn’t even know. They may or may not ask for those.

Hi @Dheat91, it took 3 days for the diagnosis. After it, it was confirmed about the engine factory problem, they contacted me explaining that they were ordering a new engine and would have a car rented for me during the repair. After 15 days everything was done.

It's June 2020 and the engine on my 2013 Sonata with 175,000 miles on it finally failed. Leading up to it was oil consumption of about 1 quart a week for the past month. Always maintained, oil was changed regularly with full synthetic every 5K miles. Car was 1000 miles from home in West Texas when it blew. Had it towed to Odessa Hyundai. Two days later I couldn't be happier. Hyundai is going to install a new engine for free AND ship the car 1000 miles back to me for free. I am impressed. I will be buying Hyundai again.

So my 2011 Hyundai Sonata was loosing power and then all of a sudden I heard a knocking noise and oil went everywhere. I believe my engine seized. I called the dealer ship and they want it towed there to diagnose it and send paperwork the manufacturer. Does anyone think I will get a new motor?

My 2013 Sonata stalled and ck engine light came on 1160 miles after Hyundai dealer oil change @ 78599 miles in May 2020. It was down 1.5 qts of oil. We were told the engine has to fail an oil consumption test 4 times and be driven 1,000 miles between tests for Hyundai to replace the engine and provide a loaner. After 165 miles, down .5 qt. Stalled 5 more times after another 30 miles. Hyundai dealer tech took for a test drive and seized the engine. it took 4 days before Hyundai agreed to replace the engine and provide a filthy loaner car. The dealer laughed and agreed it was fortunate their tech seized the engine and that it didn't happen while we were driving on the highway. Deflected any responsibility for how the failure was handled to Hyundai required protocol. 8 recalls for this car in 8 years. Never buying Hyundai again.

So my 2011 Hyundai Sonata engine locked up while being followed as it was stolen. I got my car back in one just with the motor locked up while the suspect was driving but prior he threw all my paper work out of the car including prior oil changes but anyways it only has 114 thousand miles on it. Do you think they will replace the engine?

@Emily_bubba3 did they replace your engine? My engine just seized and I have no idea where my paperwork for oil change went

My 2013 Sonota "locked up" with only 118,000 miles. Fighting with them now because I do all my own oil changes. My old 92 saturn made it until 180,000, my old 2001 Neon RT made it to 221,000 before I gave those cars to relatives. I maintain my cars religiously. They keep throwing it my face that I did not go in for the recall notice and I told them covid restrictions limited alot of options. I am still waiting on hyundai

Our 2012 Sonata Turbo just died on Monday. Mechanic just called and said the engine seized and is towing it to the dealer. We were about to start the process of trading it in. It has 150k miles. My husband has been aware of this defect for a while and we wanted to get out of the car. It would have been bad news if this happened when I was out of town! We are ready to fight with Hyundai if they give us any flack. I understand that the blue book value went down considerably when this defect was discovered. How do we value the car, including damages and costs associated from the recall to negotiate a reasonable value for trade in? Thanks! If this is not the right forum, I apologize in advance.

The engine just seized on our 2014 Sonata with 65,500 miles while driving on the highway 175 miles from home. The local dealer is telling us they won't have time to even look at the car for 1.5 to 2 months, with more delay after that to get a new engine. They don't have any loaners and won't provide us with a rental car. They even insinuated that it was due to 'neglect' when in fact we have taken the car to our local dealership and always used synthetic oil for the regular maintenance. Totally disappointed with Hyundai. We did not know about their engine issues at the time we bought the car and are surprised they come so high in all reviews, given the poor reliability and customer service. But we feel fortunate we didn't have an accident at the time of the failure. This will be our first and last Hyundai and we definitely won't recommend the brand to our friends and family. Their handling of this engine recall has been so poor that they got hit with large fine and class action lawsuit.

You need to escalate to Hyundai USA. My dealer gave me the runaround and my car stalled 2x in traffic with no oil pressure light, but it was losing oil. Dealer told me it had to fail multiple times before they would request recall approval from corporate. Said I could take it to them any time to check the oil level, but I couldn't check it because they sealed it (they did not). Fortunately the engine seized while they had it for an oil check and they replaced it and provided a loaner. My escalation was a bit moot at that point, wish I had done it the first time I stalled. https://www.hyundainews.com/en-us/bios Their emails are first inital, last name @hmausa.com. Here's who I sent complaint to, and I copied multiple people at my dealer, including the owner: Barry Ratzlaff, Chief Customer Officer, Hyundai Motor North America, bratzlaff@hmausa.com Paul Imhoff, Director, Customer Experience, Hyundai Motor America, bratzlaff@hmausa.com hyundai@hyundaicustomerfeedback.com

@guru9pn71c, what was the outcome? Mine just happened this past Friday and they told me I have to provide a full year of oil changes, and it will take five weeks just to start the diagnostic. They have about 13 cars awaiting the same thing...crazy

2 people found this helpful.

I finished up the oil consumption test on my 2016 Sonata with only 80,000 miles on it. Said they'd replace the engine but I have to PAY HALF!! I said F NO! You cover ALL of it. They have done nothing since. I will dump it and buy a Toyota or Honda. NEVER EVER will I buy a Hyundai product again. It still runs...until I get rid of it on Friday.
