CarGurus Analysis: 2022 Hyundai Sonata
overall

Summary
With 1,955 currently listed for sale and an average price of $19,806.00, 30.0% of 2022 Hyundai Sonatas for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2022 Hyundai Sonata 4.75 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8 / 10.
76.4% of 2022 Sonata models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2022 Hyundai Sonata stands out in the midsize sedan class by leaning hard into value and quality. Even with its polarizing exterior design, it exudes quality and provides exceptional value, which gives it a clear identity in a segment where many shoppers are comparing familiar names. It also brings a quiet cabin, standard advanced safety features, and a great warranty, all of which strengthen its appeal for buyers who want a well-rounded daily driver.
What makes the 2022 Hyundai Sonata especially distinctive is that it does not rely on one single selling point. Instead, it combines tremendous value with exceptional quality and adds a surprisingly sporty N Line variant for shoppers who want something a little more engaging. Its main drawback is that the design may not appeal to everyone, and all-wheel drive is not available, so buyers who want that feature will need to look elsewhere.

Nice smooth ride, plenty of power under the hood. But missing some comfort features comparing it to the Kia K5. Would still recommend the car though.

We got the Limited, the top trim line of the Sonata. We really like it. It is very comfortable, and all the cameras around the outside give wonderful situational awareness in either driving or parking. The backup camera is great in the daytime but doesnt give nearly as clear a view at night. We preferred the shift lever in our last Sonata, but the buttons are OK. The dashboard displays give a LOT of information, and we love the heads display. We looked at offerings of Honda, Toyota, and Nissan, but none seemed to have the features offered by this car.

Is the 2022 Hyundai Sonata a good car?
Yes — the 2022 Hyundai Sonata earns a 4.75/5 user rating and an 8/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Cost effectiveness at 10/10.
The Sonata stands out in the midsize sedan class by leaning hard into value and quality, while also offering a quiet cabin, standard advanced safety features, and a great warranty. That makes it a strong fit if you want a well-rounded daily driver rather than a car that wins on one flashy trait.
The main trade-offs are a potentially polarizing design and the lack of all-wheel drive. The N Line adds a more engaging personality for shoppers who want something sportier, but the core lineup is still aimed more at comfort, value, and everyday usability than outright excitement.
With 27.1% of listings marked as good or great deals, you still have room to shop selectively.
Is the 2022 Hyundai Sonata reliable?
Owners rate it 4.75/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The Sonata’s appeal is reinforced by its strong value proposition, excellent warranty coverage, and the way it combines quality with a quiet, easygoing driving experience. The expert test drive data also points to a competent ride, confident handling, and a serene cabin, all of which support the case for dependable day-to-day ownership.
Its powertrain lineup is straightforward, with conventional gasoline engines and an eight-speed automatic transmission across the main trims. Hyundai’s complimentary maintenance coverage adds another ownership perk, which can help reduce early service costs.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about complexity and more about choosing a well-kept example, since condition and maintenance history will matter more than the basic mechanical layout.
What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Hyundai Sonata?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 77% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still run a history report on any car you’re serious about, even if the listing looks clean. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a higher-trim car with more equipment to check. Focus on overall condition, since the Sonata’s value proposition is strongest when the car has been maintained well and the cabin and electronics still feel fresh.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base SE is the simplest version, while higher trims add more comfort, convenience, and appearance equipment. The SEL brings more everyday amenities, and the Limited adds more upscale features.
- Powertrain: The lineup includes a 2.5-liter four-cylinder, a turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder, and a 290-hp turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder in the N Line. The standard engines are tuned for calm, efficient commuting, while the N Line is the performance-oriented choice.
- Safety package: All trims include automatic emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, driver-attention warning, automatic high-beam headlights, rearview monitor, and Rear Occupant Alert. SEL adds blind-spot collision-avoidance assist, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-centering assistance, and Safe Exit Assist. Limited adds a blind-spot view monitor, rear park assist, and surround-view monitor.
- Infotainment: Base models use an 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Higher trims move to a 10.25-inch touchscreen with navigation, wireless device charging, and a 12-speaker Bose audio system.
- Fuel efficiency: Combined fuel economy ranges from 32 mpg in the SE to 27 mpg in the N Line, with the SEL, SEL Plus, and Limited at 31 mpg combined.
Which 2022 Hyundai Sonata trim should I buy?
The 2022 Hyundai Sonata is offered in 6 trim levels: SE, SEL, SEL Plus, Limited, N Line, and N Line Night Edition.
Here's the short version:
- SE: This is the value-focused starting point, and it gives you the core Sonata experience with standard safety tech, an 8-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a calm, efficient powertrain. It makes sense if you want the lowest entry price and don’t need extra luxury or tech.
- SEL: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds a stronger mix of comfort and convenience features, including blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, Safe Exit Assist, dual-zone climate control, and a power driver’s seat. It’s the trim to target if you want the most useful upgrades without jumping too far in price.
- SEL Plus: This trim is the step up if you want a more premium feel, with the 10.25-inch navigation system, Bose audio, panoramic sunroof, wireless charging, and a larger gauge display. It suits you if tech and cabin ambiance matter more than keeping costs as low as possible.
- Limited: This is the most upscale mainstream trim, adding leather seats, ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, head-up display, surround-view monitor, and rear parking-collision avoidance. Choose it if you want the most comfort and the most advanced convenience features short of the sportier N Line models.
- N Line: This is the one to buy if you want the Sonata with the most personality and performance, thanks to the 290-hp turbocharged engine, sport suspension, tuned exhaust, and unique styling. It’s the right pick if you care more about driving feel than maximum comfort.
- N Line Night Edition: This is the most style-heavy version, adding darker exterior accents, unique wheels, red brake calipers, and a more aggressive look. Buy it if you want the N Line’s performance character with extra visual drama.
The safety package is broad across the lineup, but the SEL and Limited trims add meaningful extra driver-assistance and parking features.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Hyundai Sonata?

- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.05% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $19,824.62, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2022 Hyundai Sonata's resale value?
The current average of $19,884 sits slightly below last year's $21,625.
That price movement suggests the Sonata has become more affordable for buyers, which can make it easier to sell into a value-conscious market later. If you buy well now, you may benefit from the model’s strong value reputation and broad appeal among shoppers looking for a well-equipped midsize sedan.
The flip side is that resale gains may be more modest if the market stays soft for midsize sedans. Higher-trim cars with desirable equipment and strong condition should hold buyer interest better than plain, heavily used examples.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.75/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2022 Hyundai Sonata safe?
The 2022 Hyundai Sonata gets five-star ratings from NHTSA for overall crash protection, with four-star ratings for front crash protection and five-star ratings for side crash protection and rollover resistance in the individual tests.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
All 2022 Sonatas include automatic emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, driver-attention warning, automatic high-beam headlights, rearview monitor, and Rear Occupant Alert. SEL adds blind-spot collision-avoidance assist, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-centering assistance, and Safe Exit Assist. Limited adds a blind-spot view monitor, rear park assist, and surround-view monitor.
One caveat is that IIHS has not rated the 2022 Sonata for crashworthiness, so you’re relying on NHTSA results and the model’s broader safety equipment rather than a full IIHS score for this year.
Should I buy a 2022 Hyundai Sonata or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2022 if:
- 27.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 77% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.05% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.75/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It combines tremendous value, exceptional quality, an outstanding warranty, and a surprisingly sporty N Line variant.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $17,159, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $19,884 average.
- It blends performance and practicality in a compelling midsize package.
The bottom line: If you want the stronger all-around buy, the 2022 is the better path because it pairs a lower current market price with strong value, safety, and satisfaction signals. If your priority is spending less up front, the 2021 is the better price-sensitive alternative, especially if you’re comfortable giving up some of the 2022’s market advantages.
