CarGurus Analysis: 2022 Hyundai Sonata
overall

Summary
With 1,955 currently listed for sale and an average price of $19,806.00, 30.0% of 2022 Hyundai Sonatas for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2022 Hyundai Sonata 4.75 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8 / 10.
76.4% of 2022 Sonata models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2022 Hyundai Sonata stands out in the midsize sedan class by leaning hard into value and quality. Even with its polarizing exterior design, it exudes quality and provides exceptional value, which gives it a clear identity in a segment where many shoppers are comparing familiar names. It also brings a quiet cabin, standard advanced safety features, and a great warranty, all of which strengthen its appeal for buyers who want a well-rounded daily driver.
What makes the 2022 Hyundai Sonata especially distinctive is that it does not rely on one single selling point. Instead, it combines tremendous value with exceptional quality and adds a surprisingly sporty N Line variant for shoppers who want something a little more engaging. Its main drawback is that the design may not appeal to everyone, and all-wheel drive is not available, so buyers who want that feature will need to look elsewhere.

Nice smooth ride, plenty of power under the hood. But missing some comfort features comparing it to the Kia K5. Would still recommend the car though.

We got the Limited, the top trim line of the Sonata. We really like it. It is very comfortable, and all the cameras around the outside give wonderful situational awareness in either driving or parking. The backup camera is great in the daytime but doesnt give nearly as clear a view at night. We preferred the shift lever in our last Sonata, but the buttons are OK. The dashboard displays give a LOT of information, and we love the heads display. We looked at offerings of Honda, Toyota, and Nissan, but none seemed to have the features offered by this car.

See more price trendsHow much does the 2022 Hyundai Sonata cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $19,828 |
| Year-Round Low | $19,830.47 |
| Year-Round High | $21,636.39 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $21,636 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −8.36% |
Prices have softened 8.36% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 2,000 listings available, which suggests you should have a reasonable amount of inventory to compare.
If you find a listing below $19,830.47, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2022 Hyundai Sonata a good car?
Yes — the 2022 Hyundai Sonata earns a 4.75/5 user rating and an 8/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Cost effectiveness at 10/10.
It stands out in the midsize sedan class by leaning hard into value and quality, while also offering a quiet cabin and standard advanced safety features. The Sonata also gives you a surprisingly sporty N Line variant if you want something more engaging, though the design may not appeal to everyone and all-wheel drive is not available.
The main trade-offs are the polarizing exterior styling and the lack of AWD. Even so, the model’s strong value proposition and broad appeal make it a sensible daily-driver choice if you want a well-rounded sedan.
30.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2022 Hyundai Sonata reliable?
Owners rate it 4.75/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The Sonata’s appeal is reinforced by its quiet cabin, strong value, and excellent warranty coverage. It also delivers a serene driving experience, with competent ride and handling and a cabin that stays impressively quiet on the road.
Its dependability story is helped by the fact that the car’s systems worked without false alarms during testing, and the model’s warranty coverage adds another layer of ownership confidence. Hyundai also includes three years or 36,000 miles of complimentary maintenance, which can reduce early ownership costs.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about mechanical drama and more about choosing a well-kept example with the right equipment and condition.
What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Hyundai Sonata?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 76% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still run a history report on any car you’re considering, even if the listing looks clean. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re shopping a higher-trim example with more equipment to check. Focus on overall condition, because the Sonata’s value story is strongest when the car has been maintained well and shows minimal wear.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: Base versions are well equipped, but the higher trims add meaningful comfort and convenience features. The SEL and above bring more upscale equipment, while the Limited adds the most luxury-oriented touches.
- Powertrain: The standard 2.5-liter four-cylinder makes 191 horsepower and 181 pound-feet of torque, while the turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder makes 180 hp and 195 lb-ft. The N Line uses a turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder with 290 hp, an eight-speed wet dual-clutch automatic transmission, sport suspension, and tuned exhaust.
- Safety package: Standard equipment includes automatic emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, driver-attention warning, automatic high-beam headlights, rearview monitor, and Rear Occupant Alert. SEL adds blind-spot collision-avoidance assist, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-centering assistance, and Safe Exit Assist. Limited adds a blind-spot view monitor, rear park assist, and surround-view monitor.
- Infotainment: Base models use an 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Higher trims move to a 10.25-inch touchscreen with navigation, wireless device charging, and a 12-speaker Bose audio system. The SEL also gets Blue Link connected services, and the SEL Tech package makes the larger screen and several upgrades standard.
- Fuel efficiency: Combined fuel economy ranges from 32 mpg on the SE to 27 mpg on the N Line. The SEL, SEL Plus, and Limited all return 31 mpg combined, and the Limited averaged 30.7 mpg in testing.
Which 2022 Hyundai Sonata trim should I buy?
The 2022 Hyundai Sonata is offered in 6 trim levels: SE, SEL, SEL Plus, Limited, N Line, and N Line Night Edition.
Here's the short version:
- Base trim: The SE gives you the essentials, but it skips some of the more upscale convenience and driver-assistance upgrades found higher up the range.
- Sweet-spot trim: The SEL is the best value pick because it adds blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, Safe Exit Assist, Blue Link, and more comfort features without jumping to luxury-car pricing.
- Premium/top trim: The Limited is the most upscale choice, adding ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, head-up display, surround-view monitor, and rear parking-collision avoidance.
- Off-road trim: The N Line is the performance choice, not the daily-driver efficiency pick, so it makes sense only if you want the extra power and sport tuning.
The SEL also stands out because its safety and convenience upgrades make it the most balanced trim for most shoppers.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Hyundai Sonata?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.
- Deal availability: 30.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 2,000 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.36% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 76.0% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $19,830.47, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2022 Hyundai Sonata's resale value?
The current average of $19,828 sits slightly below last year's $21,636.
That price movement suggests the Sonata has become more affordable for buyers, which can make it easier to move later if you price it competitively. For you as a future seller, the softer market means condition, mileage, and trim choice matter even more when it’s time to list. Well-equipped examples with strong maintenance records should hold buyer interest better than rougher or more basic ones.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.75/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2022 Hyundai Sonata safe?
The Sonata gets five-star overall crash protection from NHTSA, with four-star ratings for front crash protection and five-star ratings for side crash protection and rollover resistance.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Standard safety equipment includes automatic emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, driver-attention warning, automatic high-beam headlights, rearview monitor, and Rear Occupant Alert. SEL adds blind-spot collision-avoidance assist, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-centering assistance, and Safe Exit Assist, while Limited adds a blind-spot view monitor, rear park assist, and surround-view monitor.
One caveat is that the IIHS had not rated this model year for crashworthiness in the provided data, so you should lean on the NHTSA results and the standard safety equipment when evaluating it.
Should I buy a 2022 Hyundai Sonata or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2022 if:
- 30.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 76% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.36% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.75/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It combines strong value, a quiet cabin, standard advanced safety features, and a surprisingly sporty N Line variant.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $17,285, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $19,828 average.
- It emphasizes performance and practicality in a compelling midsize package.
The bottom line: If you want the stronger all-around value proposition, the 2022 is the better pick because it pairs a lower current market price with strong safety, comfort, and equipment. If your priority is spending less up front, the 2021 is the more budget-friendly alternative and still delivers a practical, engaging sedan experience.
