There are 1,933 listings available, which gives you a solid pool of options to compare.

Is the 2022 Hyundai Sonata a good car?

Yes — you get a 4.8/5 user rating and an 8/10 expert rating, which points to broad appeal for used-car shoppers. The 2022 Sonata stands out in the midsize sedan class by pairing a distinctive exterior with strong value, an outstanding warranty, and a quiet cabin. It also offers a surprisingly sporty N Line variant if you want something more engaging.

The standout strength is Cost effectiveness at 10/10.

The main trade-offs are its polarizing design and the fact that all-wheel drive is not available. Even so, it remains a compelling choice if you want a well-equipped sedan with a strong warranty and a more distinctive personality than many rivals.

34.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals, which suggests there are still worthwhile opportunities in the market.

Is the 2022 Hyundai Sonata reliable?

Owners rate it 4.8/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction. The Sonata is described as a quality-focused sedan with an outstanding warranty, and its quiet, competent road manners support everyday dependability. Its performance notes also point to a smooth ride, competent handling, and a serene cabin, all of which are good signs for long-term livability.

Hyundai also backs the car with three years or 36,000 miles of complimentary maintenance, which helps reduce early ownership costs.

For used buyers, the main long-term risk is making sure the car was maintained properly, since warranty coverage may be reduced or expired depending on mileage and ownership history.

What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Hyundai Sonata?

Accident-free inventory is solid at 75% — always verify the vehicle history report.

You should still run a history report on any car you’re considering, even if it looks clean on the lot. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection so you can check for wear, prior repairs, and any signs that the car wasn’t maintained carefully. Focus on overall condition, because the best used Sonata is the one that matches its equipment level with a clean record and consistent upkeep.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: Base trims are well equipped, but higher trims add more comfort, convenience, and visual polish. The N Line brings the sportiest look and feel, while Limited adds more upscale features.
• Powertrain: The standard 2.5-liter four-cylinder makes 191 horsepower and pairs with an eight-speed automatic. A turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder is available on some trims, and the N Line uses a 290-hp turbocharged 2.5-liter with a wet dual-clutch automatic.
• Safety package: Standard equipment includes automatic emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, driver-attention warning, automatic high beams, a rearview monitor, and Rear Occupant Alert. SEL adds blind-spot collision-avoidance assist, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-centering assistance, and Safe Exit Assist. Limited adds a blind-spot view monitor, rear park assist, and surround-view monitor.
• Infotainment: Base trims get an 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Higher trims upgrade to a 10.25-inch touchscreen with navigation, wireless device charging, and a 12-speaker Bose audio system.
• Fuel efficiency: The Sonata ranges from 32 mpg combined on the SE to 27 mpg combined on the N Line. The SEL, SEL Plus, and Limited all return 31 mpg combined.

Which 2022 Hyundai Sonata trim should I buy?

The 2022 Hyundai Sonata is offered in 6 trim levels: SE, SEL, SEL Plus, Limited, N Line, and N Line Night Edition.

Here's the short version:

• SE: This is the value play if you want the lowest entry point and a strong standard safety and tech package without paying for extras you may not need.
• SEL: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds meaningful comfort and safety upgrades, including blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and Safe Exit Assist.
• SEL Plus: Choose this if you want a more premium feel, since it adds the larger touchscreen, Bose audio, wireless charging, and more upscale cabin equipment.
• Limited: This is the right pick if you want the most comfort and convenience features, including ventilated front seats, a head-up display, and surround-view monitoring.
• N Line: Pick this if you want the sportiest Sonata, with the 290-hp turbo engine, sport suspension, and a more aggressive design.
• N Line Night Edition: This is for buyers who want the N Line’s performance and an even darker, more distinctive appearance package.

The safety package is broad across the lineup, but some advanced driver-assistance features are reserved for higher trims.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Hyundai Sonata?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you’re patient and compare listings carefully.

• Deal availability: 34.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,933 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 9.06% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 75.0% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $19,182, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2022 Hyundai Sonata's resale value?

The current average of $19,182 sits slightly below last year's $21,093.

That decline suggests the Sonata is currently in a softer pricing phase, which can be good news if you’re buying now but less favorable if you’re planning to sell soon. For a future seller, the key takeaway is that the market has already adjusted downward, so holding the car longer may help if prices stabilize. Strong value and a broad feature set should still help it remain appealing to used shoppers.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.8/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2022 Hyundai Sonata safe?

The 2022 Hyundai Sonata earns five-star ratings from NHTSA overall, with four-star ratings for front crash protection and five-star ratings for side crash protection and rollover resistance.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

Standard safety equipment includes automatic emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, driver-attention warning, automatic high-beam headlights, a rearview monitor, and Rear Occupant Alert. SEL adds blind-spot collision-avoidance assist, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-centering assistance, and Safe Exit Assist, while Limited adds a blind-spot view monitor, rear park assist, and surround-view monitor.

One caveat is that the IIHS has not rated the 2022 Sonata for crashworthiness, so you should lean on the NHTSA results and the car’s standard safety equipment when evaluating it.

Should I buy a 2022 Hyundai Sonata or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2022 if:

• 34.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is solid at 75% — always verify the vehicle history report.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 9.06% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.8/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2022 stands out for its strong value, outstanding warranty, and surprisingly sporty N Line variant.

Consider the 2021 if:

• At $16,739, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $19,182 average.
• It balances performance with everyday passenger and cargo practicality.

The bottom line: If you want the stronger all-around value proposition, the 2022 is the better target because it combines a lower current average price than last year with strong equipment, safety, and warranty coverage. If your priority is spending less upfront, the 2021 is worth a look, especially if you find one in good condition and can live with its older feature set.
