The check engine light came on (solid, not flashing) in my 1999 Mazda MX-5 Miata. When I disconnected/reconnected the battery, it did not come back on. Is this something I should be concerned about?

If it is a hard fault it will return, when it does do not disconnect the battery, go to a parts store that can pull the codes for you, write them down and come on back here and post them and someone will help you with further diagnosis.
