We have a 73 Super Beetle that will start and run through its warm up and when it gets to its idle will stop. Any idea what to check first? Already cleaned the carburator

How old is the gas, you might have water in it.

Atleast a year if not more. How do you go about gettting it out and replacing?

You can try some bottles of water treatment/remover for gas, "Heet" and "STP" have products that do this. This is sold at any local auto parts store or can even be found at Walmart. Read the instructions on the bottle as to how much gas it treats and when to add fresh new gasoline.
