Why it stands out
The 2016 Volkswagen Beetle stands out because it blends retro styling with modern hardware in a way few cars manage. By this generation, the Beetle had grown noticeably longer and wider than the earlier “new” Beetle, with a fraction lower stance, squared-off edges, and a more coupe-like profile. It also kept the front-engine, front-wheel-drive layout and gained a roomier interior and significantly more trunk space, even if many rivals were still more practical. That mix of familiar shape and updated proportions is a big part of its appeal.
For 2016, the Beetle’s lineup included the 1.8T model with a 1.8-liter turbocharged engine, and the diesel version had been dropped. A new Beetle 1.8T Dune model was added during the 2016 model year, bringing a raised ride height and bespoke styling details such as black wheel arch trim and side sills for a sporty, off-road look. The car also benefited from the 2014 update that standardized independent rear suspension across the range, which helped reinforce its more polished driving character.
Inside, the 2016 Volkswagen Beetle feels well made and has a premium ambience, and the broader third-generation range was well equipped. It also offers good value on the used market. The trade-offs are worth noting, though: it does not have a standout reliability record, and engines and timing chains can be problematic. Visibility also isn’t great, and some alternatives are more fun to drive.

A Volkswagen Beetle has been my dream car ever since I was little and I have 0 complaints. It’s speedy, very roomy for its size, the trunk has a lot of space too. It has all the features you need in a car. I’d recommend this car to anyone!

Love the color and the pep it has. However while is had no accidents the left front had a scrap that I have to repair. But I’m happy with the car…:the low mileage and it’s condition.

How much does the 2016 Volkswagen Beetle cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $15,670 |
| Year-Round Low | $13,997 |
| Year-Round High | $15,670 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $14,713 |
| Change vs. Last Year | +6.51% |
Prices are up 6.51% year-over-year — a sign of continued demand for this model year.
There are 270 listings available, which gives you a modest amount of inventory to compare before you buy.
Is the 2016 Volkswagen Beetle a good car?
Yes — the 4.5/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction for this model year. The 2016 Beetle stands out because it blends retro styling with modern hardware, while also offering a roomier interior and significantly more trunk space than earlier versions. It also has a premium-feeling cabin and good value on the used market, though it still trails some rivals on practicality. 25.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so there are still worthwhile opportunities if you shop carefully.
Is the 2016 Volkswagen Beetle reliable?
Owners rate it 4.5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The 2016 Beetle does not have a standout reliability record, and engines and timing chains can be problematic. That means you should treat maintenance history and mechanical condition as especially important on any used example. For long-term ownership, the main risk is buying a car with deferred upkeep or hidden engine-related issues.
What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Volkswagen Beetle?
At 48.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
Start with a vehicle history report so you can confirm accident records, title status, and service history. Then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, with extra attention to engine condition and timing-chain-related concerns. You should also focus on overall wear, because a car with a premium interior can still hide costly mechanical issues.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Volkswagen Beetle?
This is a seller’s market, so you should act selectively and be ready to move when a clean, fairly priced listing appears.
- Deal availability: 25.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 270 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices are up 6.51% year-over-year.
- Clean inventory: 48.5% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $13,997, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 Volkswagen Beetle's resale value?
The current average of $15,670 sits slightly above last year's $14,713.
That upward move suggests the market has been willing to pay more for this model year, which can help support resale strength if you buy well. If you keep the car in clean condition and stay ahead of maintenance, you should be in a better position when it is time to sell. Demand is also helped by the Beetle’s distinctive styling and premium-feeling cabin.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2016 Volkswagen Beetle or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 25.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 48.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices are up 6.51% year-over-year.
- Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2015 if:
- At $13,415, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $15,670 average.
- It offers three engine choices and improved fuel economy.
The bottom line: If you want the stronger current-market picture and are comfortable shopping carefully, the 2016 is the better primary target. If your priority is spending less up front, the 2015 is the more price-sensitive path and may be the better fit.
