Why it stands out
The 2016 Honda Civic stands out by moving beyond the old image of being merely thrift-focused and dependable. According to its test-drive summary, this all-new Civic takes bold chances in elevating small-car fashion, refinement, and build quality, and it succeeds. That makes it appealing to buyers who want a compact car that feels more polished and more modern than the Civic’s traditional reputation might suggest.
It also keeps the qualities that have long made the Civic attractive, including thrift and dependability, while packaging them in a very small, fun-to-drive form. Owner feedback reinforces that appeal, with praise for its smooth drive, reliability, impressive fuel economy, stylish design, and high safety ratings. A few owners did note that its height can make it harder to get in and out, which is a useful reminder that its strengths in style and efficiency come with some everyday tradeoffs.

Great car in good conditions, easy to maintain, and runs really well.

The 2016 Honda EX is a wonderful car. The MPG is great combined with the durability of a Honda. I upgraded from a 2002 Civic EX and got my last one up to 199K miles (only performing standard maintenance checkups). 100% worth the value, and I would recommend these cars to anyone.

Love, love, love my Hondas and this one is no different. Drives so smoothly and the hatchback is very handy. Would definitely recommend.

I love the smoothness of the drive. I love the size; I can zip in and out of any parking space. The real deal breaker for me was the left hand lane warning mirror. I do wish it was a little higher from the ground. I do struggle a little bit to get in and out.

Is the 2016 Honda Civic a good car?
Yes — the 2016 Honda Civic earns a 4.86/5 user rating and an 8/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Look and feel and Safety.
Owners consistently praise its smooth drive, reliability, and impressive fuel economy, and many also like its stylish design and strong safety reputation. That lines up with the Civic’s use case as a refined compact car that works well for commuting and everyday driving, while still feeling more upscale than many rivals. With 29.7% of listings marked as good or great deals, you still have room to shop selectively.
Is the 2016 Honda Civic reliable?
Owners rate it 4.86/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
Reviewers repeatedly point to reliability, and they also describe the car as dependable and trouble-free in everyday use. The expert evaluation reinforces that theme by emphasizing thrift and dependability, along with strong fuel economy and a well-balanced driving experience. Honda Sensing also adds useful driver-assistance features without making the car feel overcomplicated.
For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is making sure prior wear, maintenance history, and accident history are clean before you commit.
What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Honda Civic?
At 49% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car is priced near the low end of the market. Focus on condition, repair quality, and whether the equipment you want is actually present on the trim you’re considering. Because this model was offered with a wide spread of features, it’s worth confirming the exact configuration before you buy.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base sedan trim uses the 2.0-liter engine and a 6-speed manual, while higher trims add the turbocharged 1.5-liter engine, a CVT, and more upscale equipment. The top Touring trim adds chrome accents, polished two-tone 17-inch wheels, full LED lighting, and a more premium cabin presentation.
- Powertrain: The 2.0-liter four-cylinder makes 158 horsepower and 138 pound-feet of torque, while the turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder makes 174 hp and 162 lb-ft of torque. CVT-equipped models are rated at 31 mpg city and 42 highway, while the manual LX gets 27/40.
- Safety package: Honda Sensing includes forward-collision alert, auto braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keep assist, and adaptive cruise control. It’s available on every sedan trim, while on the coupe it’s only on the Touring.
- Infotainment: The system includes Android-based infotainment, Garmin navigation, Apple CarPlay, Android Audio, Bluetooth streaming, and pinch-to-zoom capability. The Touring version also gets a customizable digital instrument panel.
- Fuel efficiency: The CVT-equipped models are rated at 31 mpg city and 42 highway, and the manual LX gets 27 mpg city and 40 highway. Over 300 miles, the car averaged close to 37 mpg.
Which 2016 Honda Civic trim should I buy?
The 2016 Honda Civic is offered in 5 trim levels: LX, EX, EX-T, EX-L, Touring.
Here's the short version:
- Base trim: The LX is the most stripped-down choice, with the 2.0-liter engine and a manual transmission, but it lacks the richer features and premium feel of the higher trims.
- Sweet-spot trim: The EX-T is the best value if you want the turbocharged 1.5-liter engine without jumping all the way to the top trim.
- Premium/top trim: The Touring is the most fully equipped choice, with the strongest mix of styling, lighting, and cabin upgrades.
- Off-road trim: Not applicable for this model.
Honda Sensing is available on every sedan trim, so you can get the full safety package without moving to the top of the range.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Honda Civic?
This looks like a moderate buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully without expecting every listing to be a bargain.
- Deal availability: 29.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 2,633 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.81% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 49.0% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $13,348.29, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 Honda Civic's resale value?
The current average of $14,093 sits slightly below last year's $14,354.
That softer pricing can help you buy in at a more favorable point, but it also means future sellers may face some pressure if the market stays loose. A model with broad appeal, strong fuel economy, and a good reputation for reliability usually holds buyer interest better than a less desirable compact car. If you keep mileage, condition, and maintenance history strong, you improve your odds of protecting value over time.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.86/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2016 Honda Civic safe?
It earns Top Safety Pick+ recognition from IIHS and five-star ratings from NHTSA for frontal crash, side crash, and rollover risk.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Honda Sensing is the named driver-assistance suite, and it includes forward-collision alert, auto braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keep assist, and adaptive cruise control. On the sedan, that package is available on every trim, while on the coupe it’s limited to the Touring. The backup camera also offers three views, including a top view and an extra-wide shot.
Should I buy a 2016 Honda Civic or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 29.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 49% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.81% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.86/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
