2023 Lexus GX Reviews Summary

Thanks to the rise of car-based crossovers, today’s body-on-frame SUVs appeal to buyers with specific use-cases in mind: towing and driving off-road. Luxury SUVs like the 2023 Lexus GX appeal to an even narrower cross-section of buyers: those who want to tow or drive off-road, and do either in style and comfort. With a V8 engine as its trump card, the GX remains compelling amid its small pool of competition, but due to a combination of age and a lack of innovation, Lexus’s only real off-road SUV has fallen out of favor for anyone not enamored by a V8 growl.

2024 Mercedes-Benz GLC Reviews Summary

We reviewed the GLC SUV when it was all-new for the 2023 model year–and available with only one powertrain. AMG variants have rejoined the GLC 300 for 2024, and the GLC Coupe, which was a carryover last year, now catches up with the redesigned GLC SUV. For the purposes of this review, we’ve focused our attention on the Mercedes-AMG GLC 43, which we spent a week putting through its paces on our home turf.

Verdict: We suspect the AMG-tuned GLC misses the mark on what most shoppers are looking for in a luxury crossover, but for the right driver, it may very well prove worth the wait. For everyone else, the GLC 300 has everything we feel we have a right to hope for from a sub-$50k Mercedes-Benz.

2023 Lexus GX

7/10

2024 Mercedes-Benz GLC

8/10

The 2023 Lexus GX was a vehicle that commanded attention with its imposing spindle grille and 8.1 inches of ground clearance. Standing at an overall height of 74.2 inches, it had a formidable presence on the road. The front end, with its massive headlights, gave the GX a distinctive and aggressive look. The Black Line Special Edition, limited to 3,000 units, added exclusivity with its unique paint options, including the new Eminent White Pearl and the exclusive Nori Green Pearl. Despite its luxury badge, the GX's design was more about functionality, with a short wheelbase and minimal overhangs, making it adept at tackling off-road challenges. Inside, the GX was a mix of luxury and practicality, with heated and cooled front seats and impressive leather upholstery, though the presence of plastic materials was a letdown for a luxury SUV.

In contrast, the 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLC took a more conservative approach with its redesign, maintaining a familiar look to keep its loyal fanbase happy. The GLC featured subtle updates like new taillights and repositioned door handles, while the headlights became narrower and more aggressive. The rear design was refreshed with a trim piece connecting the taillights and a more pronounced trunk. The GLC Coupe retained its signature fastback profile, giving it a sporty appearance. Inside, the GLC's cabin was a showcase of luxury and technology, with two-tone leather upholstery, wood-and-metal dash treatment, and an abundance of screens and ambient lighting. The GLC's interior was a testament to Mercedes' commitment to providing a high-tech and opulent driving experience.

Performance

2023 Lexus GX

6/10

2024 Mercedes-Benz GLC

7/10

The 2023 Lexus GX was defined by its robust 4.6-liter V8 engine, delivering 301 horsepower and 329 pound-feet of torque through a six-speed automatic transmission. While it didn't boast the highest power figures on paper, the naturally aspirated V8 provided a satisfying linear power delivery and a distinctive engine note. The GX's towing capacity of 6,500 pounds was respectable, though it lagged behind some competitors. Fuel economy was a downside, with EPA estimates of 15 mpg city, 19 highway, and 16 combined. The GX's weight contributed to its predictable but manageable handling, and its Torsen torque-sensing limited-slip differential enhanced its off-road capabilities.

The 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLC 43, on the other hand, featured a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with 416 horsepower, surpassing the previous generation's V6. The engine was complemented by a 48-volt mild-hybrid system, enhancing performance and efficiency. The GLC 43's nine-speed AMG Speedshift MCT transmission offered quick shifts, though it resulted in a firmer ride. The GLC 300, with 255 horsepower, provided a more balanced option for those seeking a comfortable daily driver. The GLC's performance models, with their sporty nature and four-wheel steering, catered to enthusiasts looking for an engaging driving experience.

Form and function

2023 Lexus GX

6/10

2024 Mercedes-Benz GLC

7/10

The 2023 Lexus GX offered practical interior features, with ample cubby space and a deep center console bin. The decision to retain hard buttons for controls was a welcome choice for those who preferred tactile interfaces. The second row provided comfortable seating, while the third row was best reserved for occasional use due to its limited space. Cargo capacity was modest, with 11.6 cubic feet behind the third row, expanding to 64.7 cubic feet with all seats folded.

In contrast, the 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLC's cabin was driver-focused, with controls angled toward the driver. The GLC offered 21.9 cubic feet of cargo space, expanding to 59.3 cubic feet with the rear seats folded. The GLC Coupe, with its sloping roofline, had less cargo space but still provided a practical hatchback-like configuration. The GLC's interior was a blend of luxury and functionality, with power-folding rear seats and optional features like heated and ventilated seats.

Technology

2023 Lexus GX

6/10

2024 Mercedes-Benz GLC

8/10

The 2023 Lexus GX featured a 10.3-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Amazon Alexa integration. While an improvement over the previous system, it felt dated compared to newer Lexus models. The GX's off-road capabilities were enhanced by features like a real 4WD system, downhill assist, and the Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System. The Off-Road Package added further capabilities for adventurous drivers.

The 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLC boasted an 11.9-inch touchscreen running the third-generation MBUX infotainment system. The system's voice command functionality was impressive, and the GLC offered wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Higher trims added features like a Burmester 3D surround sound system, augmented reality navigation, and a head-up display. The GLC's tech offerings were comprehensive, catering to tech-savvy drivers.

Safety

2024 Mercedes-Benz GLC

7/10

The 2023 Lexus GX had not been crash-tested by the NHTSA or IIHS, but it came equipped with advanced driver assistance systems like automatic emergency braking, lane-departure alert, and adaptive cruise control. Despite its older design, the GX offered modern safety features.

The 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLC earned a Top Safety Pick+ award from the IIHS, with its standard front crash-prevention system receiving an "Acceptable" rating. The GLC's standard safety features included active brake assist, attention assist, and Pre-Safe, which prepared the vehicle for an imminent collision. Optional safety features were available through the Driver Assistance Package.
