2023 Genesis GV70 Reviews Summary

The definition of luxury has changed. No matter where you look in the various premium vehicle segments, there are entrants that you may not have seen decades ago. From performance SUVs to subcompact crossovers, there are new takes on upscale vehicles. But just as crucially is the entrance of new players. In 2015, the Genesis brand was officially spun off from Hyundai. And with the brand’s expansion into various segments, a compact like the 2023 Genesis GV70 was a must.

The GV70 was introduced for the 2022 model year and for 2023, an all-electric model joins the lineup. We evaluated the GV70 on the whole, but with a special focus on how effective the 2023 Genesis GV70 Electrified is as an EV and as a compact luxury crossover.

2024 Genesis GV70 Reviews Summary

Verdict: The GV70 offers style, impressive tech, and a well-executed electric variant. Launched as a 2022 model and thus still very fresh, the Genesis GV70 is the Korean luxury brand’s answer to the BMW X3, Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class, Lexus NX, Volvo XC60, and other small luxury crossover SUVs. The GV70 checks most of the boxes needed to compete in this segment while offering something the competition doesn’t: an all-electric powertrain option.

2023 Genesis GV70

8/10

2024 Genesis GV70

9/10

The 2023 Genesis GV70 was a testament to the brand's commitment to luxury and style. Its design drew inspiration from the G70 compact luxury sedan, with split-bar headlights and a strong chrome line that elegantly curved from behind the rear window. This design element cleverly suggested a coupe-like SUV without compromising versatility. Inside, the GV70's cabin was a showcase of luxury, featuring top-notch materials and a blend of contemporary and classic aesthetics. The climate controls were seamlessly integrated into a curving bezel, and the touchscreen rose organically from the dash, offering a user-friendly interface. The physical rollers on the center console and steering wheel were a nod to practicality, providing a tactile alternative to touch capacitive controls.

In contrast, the 2024 Genesis GV70 maintained the brand's signature styling elements, such as the split headlights and large grille, while offering a sleeker profile compared to its larger sibling, the GV80. The GV70's design struck a balance between SUV presence and luxury-car style, setting it apart from competitors like the Audi Q5 and BMW X3. The Electrified GV70 retained the same styling as its gasoline counterpart, with the charge port cleverly integrated into the grille. Inside, the 2024 model featured distinctive design elements, including an elliptical pod for climate controls and a rotary controller for the infotainment system. The dashboard's rounded cross-section added a unique touch, showcasing Genesis' commitment to innovative design.

Performance

2023 Genesis GV70

7/10

2024 Genesis GV70

7/10

The 2023 Genesis GV70 offered two gasoline engine options: a turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine producing 300 horsepower and 311 pound-feet of torque, and a twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 engine delivering 375 horsepower and 391 pound-feet of torque. Both engines were paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. The turbo-four provided ample power for most driving situations, while the V6 catered to performance enthusiasts with its extra grunt and throaty engine note. The GV70's driving experience was a harmonious blend of comfort and sharp handling, making it a well-rounded choice for luxury SUV buyers. The Electrified GV70 featured a 77.4-kWh battery pack powering two electric motors, producing a combined 429 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque. With a Boost Mode, the output increased to 483 horsepower for short bursts. The electric model offered a range of 236 miles and could recharge quickly with DC fast charging.

For 2024, the GV70's powertrain options remained unchanged. The gasoline models continued to offer the 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with 300 horsepower and the 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6 with 375 horsepower. The Electrified GV70 retained its dual-motor setup, delivering 429 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque, with a Boost Mode for additional power. While the GV70 provided a competent driving experience, it didn't excel in either sporty handling or plush comfort. The suspension tended to crash over bumps, and the chassis felt heavier through corners compared to sportier rivals. However, the Electrified model's regenerative braking system allowed for customizable driving experiences, from minimal regen to one-pedal driving. Despite its weight, the Electrified GV70 didn't feel more cumbersome than its gasoline counterpart.

Form and function

2024 Genesis GV70

8/10

The 2023 Genesis GV70 offered 56.9 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seats folded and 28.9 cubic feet with the seats in use, making it competitive in the compact luxury SUV segment. The hands-free power liftgate added convenience, while the interior featured decently large cupholders and a helpful tray in the center console. Front-seat passengers enjoyed comfortable seating, but rear-seat legroom was tighter, requiring adjustments for a comfortable position.

In 2024, the GV70's interior space remained competitive, with slightly less headroom than some rivals but more front-seat legroom than others. The cargo space was 28.9 cubic feet with the rear seats up and 56.9 cubic feet with them folded. The Electrified GV70's battery pack had minimal impact on interior space, with only slight reductions in legroom and headroom. The stylish interior design, featuring an orb-like infotainment controller and rotary shifter, limited small-item storage. However, the Electrified model offered automatic side bolsters for the front seats, enhancing support during spirited driving.

The 2023 Genesis GV70 came equipped with a 14.5-inch touchscreen infotainment system featuring navigation, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. The system was user-friendly, with large icons and logical menu navigation. The center console housed helpful buttons and a rotary dial for easy control, though its proximity to the rotary shifter could cause confusion. The GV70 also included four USB ports, wireless device charging, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and a nine-speaker stereo system. Optional features included ambient lighting, a digital instrument panel, and the Genesis digital key.

In 2024, the GV70's infotainment system continued to offer a 14.5-inch touchscreen with wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Lower trims featured an 8-inch digital instrument cluster, while higher grades boasted a 12.3-inch unit with a 3D effect. A 12-inch head-up display and a 16-speaker Lexicon audio system were available. The system's intuitive layout and large tiles made it easy to use, and the rotary controller on the center console provided a high-quality feel. Additional features included a fingerprint scanner for driver profiles and digital key functionality, allowing a phone to replace the key fob.

The 2023 Genesis GV70 offered a comprehensive suite of driver-assistance technologies, including forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, driver attention monitoring, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. The 2.5T model's Advance Package added a blind-spot camera system, reverse automatic emergency braking, and a 360-degree parking camera system. The Electrified GV70 included most of these features as standard, with the head-up display available in the Prestige trim.

For 2024, the gasoline GV70 received the IIHS's Top Safety Pick+ award, while the Electrified model earned the same accolade as a 2023 model. The NHTSA awarded four-star frontal and rollover crash-test ratings for gasoline models, with the 2023 GV70 receiving a five-star overall safety rating. All GV70 models came with standard safety features like lane-keep assist, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and Highway Driving Assist. The Highway Driving Assist 2 system added automated lane-change capability and blind-spot monitoring. Genesis also offered high-tech safety features, including a safe exit assist function and a radar-based rear occupant alert system.
